Physical toys can be recognized by the iPad touch screen, utilized by free game app. The interaction (maybe requirement?) of physical toys, that must be purchased, in order to utilize a free app... curious to see if this kind of interaction will gain footing in education

Giving all students in a school district iPads could have some really positive results. Having all textbooks combined on a tablet has the potential not just to aid in convenience, but can also allow for students to access more up to date texts. I think that there is also a lot to be said for the potential of an iPad to help engage students in the classroom.

While in theory, the "allow for students to access more up to date texts" is a fantastic purpose for putting content on line and not burning it to a CD or printing the pages, it is the text book adoption laws in each state that publishers battle with every cycle, many of which won't allow for updates or changes to the one they purchase for the length of the adoption.

I am wondering if the current financial state of most schools can support where this technology is going. Are we doing learning a DISSERVICE by expecting them to upgrade their technology infrastructure at the pace that technology changes?

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I think there is this notion that somehow technology is the answer to solving our fundamental problems with education. I love technology as much as anyone else but I despair at schools falling over each other to give their students iPads. Quote from the article - "Think of four or five students struggling with the same math problem. The teacher can pull out her iPad on the fly and sketch a diagram for everyone in the room to see". Does the teacher need an iPad to do that? What is wrong with the blackboard? On the other hand, if you tell me that another student who has found a novel way to solve the problem can project her solution for others to see and learn, I can see some value.

Possibility of gesture-interface technology on forthcoming ipads. 

Is it only a matter of time before we will see more fulfillment of major aspects of the Wireless EdTech and National Educational Technology Plan mobile recommendations? I HOPE so! When Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty suggested last September that the time had come for electorate to engage in meaningful debate on the issue of handheld media devices in the province's classrooms, the backlash was swift. The public wanted nothing of it.

I like how Dr. Heineken forces his residents to interact directly with the patients first, then consult technology - puts the technology at the service of the doctor, not the other way around.

This is a classic example of "gee whiz - it's magic" journalism about technology in education

It's intersting to think about what sorts of journalists get handed these kinds of stories. Should this be the education beat? The technology beat? This particular journalist doesn't seem to bring expertise of either kind. (It seems like it's just a Metro desk story.) Mostly he comes across as a shill for Apple.

The financial struggles of print media have led to the substitution of "piecework" journalists, often with no credentials for the story, for qualified professionals with strong backgrounds. Poor articles are the result...

Here's video examples of some of the MIND Institute's games... I'm not sure how the reveal of locations behind the iPad really come into play... SURELY they could have come up with more functional examples that relate content to real life?

Ipad app that teaches fractions

I tend to agree with Professor Cuban - "IPads are marvelous tools to engage kids, but then the novelty wears off and you get into hard-core issues of teaching and learning." The real challenge is to convert the initial excitement and performance improvement into sustained progress. The key may be in leveraging the increased self-efficacy of students.

This article makes me wonder about the novelty bump you get when you try anything new. In EcoMuve, they researched the effectiveness of EcoMuve vs a new ecology classroom based activity. This tactic is measuring the effectiveness of the technology. However in these studies, if they had kids using a computer game to practice fractions, did the control group practice fractions using a classroom based activity? 15% growth is not much to get excited about.

The trend: They already help teach kids the alphabet, sentence construction and how to graph equations. Now, iPads are being studied as a tool for students with autism and physical disabilities. University of Toronto professor Rhonda McEwen is researching how students at Toronto's Beverley School - which teaches special needs kids from kindergarten to Grade 8 - learn with iPad apps and games that require touch. In addition, the link from the smartboard section of the article, leads to a very interesting TED Talk about how to make smartboards.

It's good to have an ipad at hand.

Disruptive or Transformative? Katy Culver, a faculty associate at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, uses the iPad in her magazine publishing class, and says overall, it has been a positive experience in her class since it has not made significant changes to the syllabus. New bottle, old wine?
