Tom Vander Ark: 2011 Was an Inflection Point for Digital Learning - 4 views

  •
This article reminds of what Professor Dede said in the class, that we are at the inflection point in the history of of educational technologies. The author confirms that with eleven marked changes.
  •
This is a very exciting time but I noticed that the author cited evidence that I believe will only contribute to the achievement gap. He cites that poverty is increasing and every new educational effort requires money or families with time to spend with their children. The adults who focus on children in poverty are the teachers. Where are they in the list?
  •
I agree overall about 2011 being an inflection point, but I also remember that IBM 360 and TV were supposed to revolutionalize education too.

Two Schools of Thought: The Key Difference Between Apple and Google - 1 views

  •
Nice contrast - one company believes in design and the other in data.
  •
I'm intrigued by the writer's argument that a focus on data (Google) helps make the existing technologies more effective and powerful, while the focus on design (Apple) helps create new technologies and bring about revolutions in technology usage. It seems to me that we must have both existing to reap maximum benefit, but it's not clear whether the two ideologies together will be as effective as they are apart.

Larry Cuban on NYT article on Waldorf school controversy - 4 views

  •
Cuban asks an important question that cuts through the apparent controversy: what level of technology use is best for children in school? I think his response also highlights how to frame technology as a tool and enhancement rather than a replacement for hands-on learning

New iPad App Puts Viewers Inside Immersive Video - 1 views

  •
A new iPad app uses immersive technology to convey a richer video experience.
  •
Looks like a great app. I can imagine it being applied in a lot of ways. I see that "The app turns specially encoded video into a virtual reality experience", which means that you need specially recorded video. This may limit the absorption of the app.

How The 10 Most Innovative Colleges Use Technology - 4 views

  •
This infographic is especially interesting because, as far as I saw it, most of these "innovative" approaches didn't actually seem all that extraordinary. More generally, it's puzzling (and troubling, really) that despite advances in ed-tech in primary and secondary school, higher education institutions are quite far behind the curve as far as innovative uses of technology goes.
  •
I agree - besides a lot of back-office and stick-stuff-online applications, only Mixable stood out (forming study groups), and that seems not to have much scope.

  •
Results of an opinion poll commissioned by Dell comparing technology use in schools in the US, Germany, and China. There's a bit of we're-falling-behind-China hysteria here, I think, but it does highlight some opportunities. Also, Dell's Education Challenge is investing $30,000 in university student (graduate or undergraduate) projects to innovate learning in K-12 schools. Deadline is at the end of October. http://www.dellchallenge.org/k12
