Superheroes of today are now being portrayed as 'playboys' -- take Iron Man, for example. Many believe that these are now setting bad examples to children.

Very interesting article. It explains how superheroes today have a lot more violent, destructive and rule-breaking behavior. It's almost as if superheroes who aren't like this are seen as boring or uncool, like the comic book superheroes of yesterday.

I think that this is a good point. It is kind of how you look at the bigger picture as opposed to small things that make them bad though. So even though your example of Iron Man being a playboy is something that are bad examples to children, there are a lot of positive things that happen through out the movie that makes Iron Man look like a really good guy.

This is an example of social comparison. The article talks about how we see bodies of superheroes and want to be like them, but that is unrealistic. It examples what the stars of these movies go through to achieve their physiques and how that will never be a reality for normal people.

I like this article because it speaks to the unrealistic expectation of being like a superhero. It talks about how normal people cannot achieve the physical physique of these actors because they just don't have the resources. This article helps prove that we associate superheroes with muscular physiques, but that it is not achievable for the average person.

A young boy sits in a psychologist's office, playing with action figures in a sand tray. There's an epic battle on the horizon, one that crosses traditional DC/Marvel lines. On one side there's Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman. On the other, there's an unpredictable fire-breathing dragon, with big eyes and sharp teeth.

This article touches on the fact that the superhero characters are related to people within a child's life. Wonder Woman represents his mother, the fire-breathing dragon represents the troubles the child is facing, ect.

This article is an example of Authority Theory. It is talking about how kids can use comic books and superhero movies as therapy. Since the article has a lot of quotes and examples from doctors about how it helps kids overcome their fear of monsters. They turned to superheroes to overcome those fears.

This article looks into how the society of today want a superhero that is not seen as boring but rather has a 'gritty' background. In order to modernize and feel relate-able the character must be darker and the story-line must fit into today's world, for example the dark knight fighting police corruption and urban terrorism.

Agreed. People don't like a superhero as much if they obey all the rules all the time and are a law abiding citizen because it's boring. It's more appealing to people to watch them take the law into their own hands. Captain America is a perfect example and the opening line: "Captain America is only interesting if he's a prick."

I definitely like the idea that superhero's are just as dark and as tortured as villains are. Everyone has a different background story, and they are not perfect, but it is what you do about your situation, and how you learn to grow from it. It makes it much more realistic for us to look at them and say "okay, they have their problems too"

Some of the greatest comic book artists of all time had to work under restrictions. This is an example of technological determinism. Where the media, comic book creators, had control over the characters colors.

This was definitely interesting to read. Many times when we think of superheroes and the colors they wear we do not think about the limitations of the artists creativity when drawing the character for the first time.

This article is about race and gender in superhero movies. I thought this quote from the article was really interesting "As somebody recently pointed out, there are currently more big budget superhero films headlined by blond men named Chris than by women and other ethnicities combined. Even when more diverse characters appear they do so in less prominent roles"

I thought this was a great article for my research topic. A quote i enjoyed was when the author was talking about women in refrigerators and said, "female characters are killed off just to provide a motive for their male counterparts. In the films they seldom even garner this much attention". This is very true in many super hero movies.

This was a good article for my topic. My paper deals with diversity in regards to both gender and race and supported some of the points in my research. I also liked the part about X-Men because that was the movie I coded and am using as examples for my paper.

These infographics on colors are somewhat consistent with our findings on color.

This infographic is awesome! It was interesting looking at the infographic statistics compared to the cross tabulations. Some statistics correlated perfectly but others were complete opposites.

I found this infographic awesome as well. It was interesting to relate the statistics in these infographics to the cross-tabulations of the data we collected as a group. Some were consistent, while others were not. For example, this infographic showed black as being the most common color of villains, where our cross-tabulations showed that villains wore more light and bright colors. Interesting information and easy to read.

LOS ANGELES - A woman in tights, a "queer" Flash and a black lead - all in a single bound. While Marvel and Sony dither about the diversity of their superhero lineups, DC Comics and Warner Bros. (in conjunction with New Line) punctured every Spandex ceiling on Wednesday when they announced an unprecedentedly diverse lineup of superhero movies. This article, like many others, highlights the lack of diversity in comic-based superhero movies. One aspect of it's content that caught my attention, however, were the examples used to show success in cast diversity. Films like The Hunger Games and Lucy use strong female roles and have had amazing success-- another reason to wonder why Marvel and DC are moving so slowly to do the same.

This article really helped me while writing my paper. It gave me an example about some super hero movies that use racial and even cultural minorities and how they are perceived to be negative.

Ever since ancient times, humanity has sought to use stories to explain the world in which it lives. Just as ancient man used stories of gods and monsters to explain the world, modern man uses stories of godlike heroes and monstrous villains to do the same.

I really liked this article. It talks about real crime with superheroes and if they were actually real we may be in big trouble. They used an example about homeowners insurance. How if superman threw a car into your house--most likely your insurance wouldn't cover it which could result in the homeowner suing the superhero. Similar to The Incredibles when Mr. Incredible is sued for saving a man who didn't want to be saved.

I think that this is easily an example of cultivation theory because it fits with the idea that the more that society spends living in the television world, the more that they try to relate to it. I think that the more that you watch superhero movies, you get this idea in your idea that they have to play out a certain way, and if they were to go against these "golden rules" would the movie still be successful?

Superhero films are known for their male-centric nature. Women are left sorting through the female characters that we are offered, and boy, is it grim. The common question that comes up when chatting with people about the role of gender in superhero films is: "Well, he is sexy too, isn't he?
