Do you think a movie would still be successful if there wasn't hardship for the hero? What if there was no challenge? What if they were not tested? Would we love them as much? I think you have to watch them struggle before you can be happy for their success.

I liked this article because it reminds us the importance of the sequences we see in the movies. Watching a character overcome a hardship is much more captivating when you respect the character. To catch the watchers attention, tragedy is included from the beginning. It helps you better connect and understand the character, so I agree in that tragedy is necessary to create a good superhero movie.

I believe that no matter what genre a movie is the audience always roots for the underdog. Therefore I think it is important to show a hardship for the hero and how the hero overcomes it. I think overcoming the obstacle in their life makes them a hero in a sense.

This article really tells us something about Marvel and their lack of interest in creating a superhero movie with a female lead. It seems that Feige is just beating around the bush and doesn't want to openly say that they just don't want to make that step towards female superhero movies. It would work very well for someone doing their paper about gender in superhero movies!

In this article, Kevin Feige, who is the president of marvel studios, says that this is not a good time to try to make a superhero movie starring a female hero, but that this is something that he really wants to happen. He said that it would be hard for them to tell the right story, and that there are a ton of other genre's that are showing movies that have very strong, independent, female leads such as the Hunger Games and Divergent.

This article looks into how the society of today want a superhero that is not seen as boring but rather has a 'gritty' background. In order to modernize and feel relate-able the character must be darker and the story-line must fit into today's world, for example the dark knight fighting police corruption and urban terrorism.

Agreed. People don't like a superhero as much if they obey all the rules all the time and are a law abiding citizen because it's boring. It's more appealing to people to watch them take the law into their own hands. Captain America is a perfect example and the opening line: "Captain America is only interesting if he's a prick."

I definitely like the idea that superhero's are just as dark and as tortured as villains are. Everyone has a different background story, and they are not perfect, but it is what you do about your situation, and how you learn to grow from it. It makes it much more realistic for us to look at them and say "okay, they have their problems too"

There has been a lot of talk about the inclusion of female roles in superhero movies. But instead of them being supporting roles, we are looking for them to star in their own films. We are looking for spin off movies for black widow, who played supporting roles in Iron Man and The Avengers. But they are also talking about bringing back Wonder Woman.

This article really shows how important the first female-led debute is right now and how if Marvel doesn't take advantage of it then someone else will. It's a big step but one that needs to be made and this article makes that clear. I really enjoyed reading it!

I thought this article was very interesting. It touched base on how there is a demand for a female lead in a superhero movie instead of just a supporting role. One of the quotes mentioned in the article that I found interesting was that directors and producers were hesitant to make a female super hero movie because Catwoman and Elektra which starred female super heroes as the main character received poor consumer response in the box offices.

This article is about race and gender in superhero movies. I thought this quote from the article was really interesting "As somebody recently pointed out, there are currently more big budget superhero films headlined by blond men named Chris than by women and other ethnicities combined. Even when more diverse characters appear they do so in less prominent roles"

I thought this was a great article for my research topic. A quote i enjoyed was when the author was talking about women in refrigerators and said, "female characters are killed off just to provide a motive for their male counterparts. In the films they seldom even garner this much attention". This is very true in many super hero movies.

This was a good article for my topic. My paper deals with diversity in regards to both gender and race and supported some of the points in my research. I also liked the part about X-Men because that was the movie I coded and am using as examples for my paper.

LOS ANGELES - A woman in tights, a "queer" Flash and a black lead - all in a single bound. While Marvel and Sony dither about the diversity of their superhero lineups, DC Comics and Warner Bros. (in conjunction with New Line) punctured every Spandex ceiling on Wednesday when they announced an unprecedentedly diverse lineup of superhero movies. This article, like many others, highlights the lack of diversity in comic-based superhero movies. One aspect of it's content that caught my attention, however, were the examples used to show success in cast diversity. Films like The Hunger Games and Lucy use strong female roles and have had amazing success-- another reason to wonder why Marvel and DC are moving so slowly to do the same.

This is a database with a good amount of superheroes and villains characters. It provides statistics relating to their intelligence, strength, endurance and so on. It can provide a specific schema for certain superheroes or villains.

This is an awesome database, it is very helpful for my topic because I am looking at the underrepresentation of women as super heroes. I can easily go down this list and see that there are very few women.

And for those of you not keeping count, Wonder Woman still remains at 1 feature-length film, which was an animated direct-to-video movie in 2009. Now, I'm no math major, but something seems off here. Where are all the female superheroes?

This is a very interesting article about how female superheroes are very underestimated. I think this would be a good article for anyone looking at gender. It is interesting because our data supports thus theory. Only one of the superhero movies in the data we have had a female as the superhero.

I really enjoyed this article and it would be great for my research paper because I would like to talk about female vs. male superheros. Very good article.

"Personal prejudice: Hispanic and Latino women with blond hair look like hookers to me, no matter how clean or "cute" they are. Somehow those skin tones that look so good with dark, dark hair just don't work for me with lighter shades. Like I said - personal prejudice." This quote really stuck out to me. People like this are a major contributing factor in the lack of diversity not only in superhero films, but the film industry in general.

This article discusses the lack of minorities, both in race and gender, in superhero films. It then goes on to show why the movie industry is reluctant to change the current era of white male superheros. Based on past failures of films that portrayed minorities, filmmakers don't want to take a risk making a movie that stars a minority.

This is an excellent article on diversity amongst superheroes. It is fairly detailed and scholarly, as well as credible.

But I think that that is the reason that we are drawn to these types of movies. If the superhero was not super attractive I don't think that we would enjoy the movies as much. That is really bad for me to say, because it plays along with stereotype and overall impressions of this genre. But anymore, I think that for every genre this is what is happening. You are always looking for the hot star at the time.

This article is about how superheroes have surrounded us in pop culture. One lunchboxes, clothing, posters, etc., they are all around.

This is a great article to establish a basis for the effect superheroes have on society. Some of the ideas here-- like, "Probably every person that has ever seen or read about a superhero has imagined himself or herself in that role," are a great way to introduce some of the data we found, or even a research question related back to the idea.

A young boy sits in a psychologist's office, playing with action figures in a sand tray. There's an epic battle on the horizon, one that crosses traditional DC/Marvel lines. On one side there's Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman. On the other, there's an unpredictable fire-breathing dragon, with big eyes and sharp teeth.

This article touches on the fact that the superhero characters are related to people within a child's life. Wonder Woman represents his mother, the fire-breathing dragon represents the troubles the child is facing, ect.

This article is an example of Authority Theory. It is talking about how kids can use comic books and superhero movies as therapy. Since the article has a lot of quotes and examples from doctors about how it helps kids overcome their fear of monsters. They turned to superheroes to overcome those fears.

Very interesting article. It explains how superheroes today have a lot more violent, destructive and rule-breaking behavior. It's almost as if superheroes who aren't like this are seen as boring or uncool, like the comic book superheroes of yesterday.

I think that this is a good point. It is kind of how you look at the bigger picture as opposed to small things that make them bad though. So even though your example of Iron Man being a playboy is something that are bad examples to children, there are a lot of positive things that happen through out the movie that makes Iron Man look like a really good guy.

To say the comic book industry has a slight gender skew is like saying Superman is kind of strong. Comic books - much like the film industry they now fuel - vastly under-represent women. The people who write comic books, particularly for major publishers, are overwhelmingly men.

This article focuses on comic books as a male dominated industry. The problem that fighting for equality and more women in lead roles is that the industry will not change unless they all change. Meaning that why would they change from a male lead to a female lead, if they can make more money with the male superhero. The sad truth is that this will always be a problem within the superhero world. And this article talks exactly about that.

A very interesting article on civilian casualties in superhero movies. Has some interesting statistical type information and can be a good article to cite if your research paper has to do with a superhero interacting with the civilian population.

Does there always have to be an origin behind a superhero movie? Could they come up with a new movie, introduce a new superhero and not show us how they became a superhero? Or do we have to have background information for the movie to mean something to us? I think without origins there are so many questions that would be left unanswered.

This article gave me a working definition of what a super hero is and what they are perceived to be and what actions of theirs are acceptable in society.

I really liked this article because this issue is a hot topic in the media today. Whether boys should play with dolls and girls be policemen-- I think this article says it perfectly when we assume boys should like superheroes and want to be masculine like they are. I also agree that parents should talk with their kids about the different stereotyping but allow them to make their own choice.

This article is fitting with a key debate in today's society over the influences that children have within their lives. Boys should like blue, girls should like pink. It fit's into everyday life as women are portrayed through media as damsels in distress and that men are the knights in shining armour. Stereotyping is slowly becoming an issue that more and more parents are dealing with when bringing children up.
