Perhaps at no time is this more evident than in the aftermath of natural disasters (e.g., floods, hurricanes, earthquakes). Disease can spread rapidly and people can quickly become dehydrated when the clean water infrastructure has been compromised or destroyed. In such situations, bottled water can mean the difference between life and death.

While many Americans will be firing up barbeques and attending family picnics this weekend to celebrate Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer also brings searching for ways to stay cool, refreshed, and adequately hydrated. But does the average American know how much water to consume to avoid dehydration?

According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), the average wholesale price per gallon of domestic non-sparkling bottled water was $1.21 in 2015. As a popular retail food product, bottled water is available at many differing price points.

By federal law, FDA regulations governing the safety and quality of bottled water must be at least as stringent as the EPA regulations that govern tap water. And, in some cases, the bottled water regulations are more stringent.
