MYTH: THERE IS ONLY ONE STAFFER AT THE FDA WHO OVERSEES REGULATION OF THE ENTIRE BOTTLED WATER INDUSTRY. FACT The FDA management of the bottled water program is based out of the FDA/Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), located in College Park, Maryland. In addition to staff directly responsible for oversight of bottled water, CFSAN has over 800 employees, including highly specialized professionals such as chemists, microbiologists, toxicologists, food technologists, molecular biologists, pharmacologists, nutritionists, and physicians. While these individuals and their staffs oversee regulatory enactment and enforcement of the bottled water industry, the significant work is done by both FDA regional offices in the United States and the states themselves. Inspections and enforcement all happen in these locations, not in College Park. All 50 states have delegation agreements with FDA, meaning that when they inspect a bottled water plant (or ANY food processing facility) they act with the full authority of the FDA.

MYTH: BOTTLED WATER COMPANIES ARE DRAINING WATER SUPPLIES. FACT According to a 2005 study by the Drinking Water Research Foundation (DWRF), annual bottled water production accounts for less than 2/100 of one percent (0.02%) of the total groundwater withdrawn in the United States each year. Additionally, based on information gathered in the DWRF study, in 2001, 87% of the water withdrawn by bottled water companies, on average, was actually bottled for consumption by humans, so the bottling process is a very efficient one.

BOTTLED WATER - THE NATION'S HEALTHIEST PACKAGED BEVERAGE IS OFFICIALLY AMERICA'S FAVORITE Americans are drinking more bottled water than any other packaged beverage--outselling carbonated soft drinks, by volume, for the first time in history, the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) and the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC) announced today. Healthy, convenient, and safe, bottled water is America's favorite packaged water, according to the latest data from BMC. Bottled water sales increased by 10 percent in 2016, and now total $16 billion (wholesale). In 2016, total U.S. bottled water consumption grew by 8.6 percent to 12.8 billion gallons, up from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015. In addition, per-capita consumption is up 7.7 percent in 2016, with every person in America drinking an average of 39.3 gallons of bottled water last year, while average intake of carbonated soft drinks slipped to about 38.5 gallons, BMC statistics show.

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is proud to be a sponsor of "Protect Your Groundwater Day", which is being held on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. The annual commemoration marking our country's need to protect and maintain water from underground aquifers is spearheaded by the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) in Westerville, Ohio. Groundwater is important to protect because 95 percent of all available freshwater comes from underground sources, according to NGWA and the U.S. Geological Survey. Many public water systems draw at least a portion of their water supply from groundwater, so protecting this renewable resource also helps ensure the municipal water supplies are safe and treatment costs are reduced.

Bottled water is comprehensively regulated as a packaged food product by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state regulatory agencies. The current system of bottled water regulation provides consumers with outstanding bottled water safety, quality and public health protection.

Bottled water and tap water can and should co-exist. Neither the government nor the private sector should have an exclusively monopoly on the water supply. Hence the reason we have anti-monopoly laws in this country. Giving either sector a monopoly on water simply affords too much control and power over the masses as water is a life critical resource. Remember that our Constitution was founded on the premise of Checks and Balances. There is no balance if the government controls the water supply exclusively. Therefore, banning the private sector from selling water is not only setting a bad precedent and is clearly anti-Capitalism, it's also a path to Socialism.
