How This Influenced My Thinking: Makes the idea of ZPD and scaffolding very clear in my mind and reinforced the importance of this idea. Title: Vygotsky Development & Zone of Proximal Dev & Constructivist Author: Professor Indiana Date published: 20May2010 Why relevant and summary: This video is relevant because it describes Vygotsky's theory of Zone of Proximal Development and gives good examples. This video shows how young children can be taught not only by teachers and adults but by their peers who are slightly more advanced than them.You are able to witness both Scaffolding and guided participation within this segment. How this influenced my thinking: It gave me a better understanding of Vygotsky's theory. Credibility of Source: it was published by a professor.

Title: Habituation in infant cognition Author:Nicholas Turk-Browne, Brian Scholl, and Marvin Chun Date Published: Dec. 2, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary:This research article goes over the basic principles of habituation and dishabituation. It also covers experiments performed and breaks them down to show how infants react to stimuli for periods of time. How This Influenced My Thinking: This reinforced my beliefs on habituation and dishabituation and increased my knowledge on the subject. Credibility of Source:Uses references and research so it is pretty reliable

Title: Parenting Your Unique Child Author: Carol Ostergen, Ph.D. Date Published: 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses the benefits to knowing and understanding your childs temperament and the goodness to fit theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has made me agree that each child should definitely be treated differently and that each child has a different response and parents can not respond the same way to each child and expect that each child will respond the same. Credibility of Source:Yes this article is credible. How This Influenced My Thinking: Helped understand different catagories. Credibility of Source: Very High

Title: Fetal sensitivities to properties of maternal speech and language Author: B.S. Kisilevsky et al Date: 18 May 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This article summarizes a study that shows that infants are able to distinguish their mother's voice from stranger females and from father's voice. This study also indicated that infants can distinguish between their native language and non-native languages. How this influenced my thinking: We hear a lot of stories of infants immediately calming down or ceasing to cry when they hear a familiar voice, so it seems only natural that infants can recognize mother's voice from other female voices. It is also interesting that infants can distinguish between their native language and foreign languages. Credibility of Source: This study was published in Infant Behavior and Development, a journal. It seems highly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This gave a very in depth description of these terms and even compares these techniques across the life span. Credibility of Source: high

Title: Temperament and Your Child's Personality Author: LLC and Dr. Myers Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a great explanation of what temperament is and how is affects your child, your child's development as well as you. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me better understand what temperament in a child can influence development. Credibility of Source: Credible, the article by Dr. Meyers seemed to be thoroughly researched and well written in a way that was reader friendly.

Oakes Date Published: August 9, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant because it discusses and defines habituation and dishabituation. As it gives examples of habituation and dishabituation and provides references of studies done on infants to test habituation and dishabituation. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article furthered my understanding of habituation and dishabituation. Credibility of Source: Article found in the Journal of Cognition and Development. very credible.

Title: White Paper: Teaching in the Zone Author: Angela Lui Date published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This paper goes into amazing depth about zone proximal development as well as scaffolding. It doesn't give a generic textbook definition, but rather puts it into terms that are not only interesting but easy to understand. How this influenced my thinking: It allowed to be better understand what the textbook had already explained. I was able to see real life examples of these definitions. Credibility of source: Very credible, there were tons of references and the author appears to have done extensive research prior to writing this.

Title: Mother-Baby Behavioral sleep Laboratory Author: James McKenna Date Published: 2013 Why Relevant and Summary: Sharing your bed with your infant is a controversial issue, that has opponents and supporters. Dr McKenna has been studying sleep patterns of the infant for over 30 years and highly supports and recommends co sleeping if done properly. There are steps that he explains and the video is really good. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have practiced bed sharing with both my boys when they were infants and it was a very wonderful and beneficial experience for all of us. I am glad research supports it, despite media trying to make it a big issue. Credibility of Source:

Why Relevant and Summary:Describes everything from grasping skills to cognitive development and why babies do what they do at certain ages. It is very descriptive and tells you why babies play with certain toys and how it affects their thinking. How This Influenced My Thinking:I know a lot more about how and why babies play with certain toys. Credibility of Source:Somewhat credible as seeing as there is an author and other links reguarding more information if needed.

Title: Mary Ainsworth and Attachment Theory Author: Richard Brodie Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This website has a good video that shows secure attachment with an infant and her mother. It also discusses the other types of attachment; Anxious-Ambivalent Insecure Attachment and Anxious-Avoidant insecure attachment. How this influenced my thinking: This web based article allowed me to get a deeper understanding of the three different types of attachment that Ainsworth studied. Title:Outdoor Play Author: Johnson, Christie & Wardle Date Published: 2005 Why relevant/summary: This article is relevant because it throughly discusses the importance of physical activity to a growing toddler, specifically how outdoor play can aide in not only their physical development but how it can also be used as a tool for cognitive learning opportunities. How this influenced my thinking: This article opened my eyes to how outdoor play is not only providing play and physical activity for a young child but also many different learning opportunities that they may not experience otherwise. Credibility of Source: Very credible, the authors provided many examples as well as citations and references.

Title: Social Emotional Development: 24-36 months Author: No author Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This is an accessible guide for parents of two year olds to learn ways to help their toddler understand his feelings, encourage early friendships, letting the child lead in play, and supporting older toddlers' developing skills, as well as helping the child learn to resolve conflict in healthy ways, understand reasons for limits/request, use language to communicate needs. How this influenced my thinking: As a mother of two children (fairly recently out of the toddler stage) this gave me quite a bit to reflect on as far as my own parenting and how I can make improvements going forward should I ever have more children, and it would likely influence any advice I may give out to parents of toddlers. Credibility of Source: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families is an organization dedicated to healthy child development, so this publication is likely backed by solid research.

Title: ADHD Overview Author: Jacob Silverman Date Published: No date Why relevant and summary: This is a comprehensive overview of ADHD, the causes, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments and related disorders. There are also a number of other highly relevant articles that are easily accessible on this site. How this influenced my thinking: There is a lot of information about raising a child with ADHD. I've never had experience with this in regards to my own children, but as a former teacher I have been aware of the 'basics' for many years. There is so much to learn and understand on this topic, especially so that caregivers can be more understanding of individualized needs and be less likely to judge or treat children with ADHD differently. Credibility of source: This is a Discovery Health article. It may not be highly credible in it's own right, but likely pulled it's information from scholarly/medical/research based resources.

How this influenced my thinking: This made me realize that ADHD could affect an dult to the point of suicide. Credibility:it came from WedMD and was recently published.
