Summary and Why Relevant: Soon after the publication of "Growing Old," sociologists developed other models of aging that contradicted disengagement. Two resulting theories of aging offer a softer outlook on the transition from able adult to dependent senior. Both assert that the elderly remain a viable part of society until death, and that society places value in the role of seniors. Title: The Development of Self-Esteem Author: Sue and Jo Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This is a straightforward summary of a child's cognitive development of self-esteem. Although it doesn't include many details of what contributes to a child's self-esteem it does clearly define what its makeup is. How This Influenced My Thinking: This was interesting to me because it summed up the definition of self-esteem in a nutshell. I am personally interested in how to promote a healthy self-esteem in children but this website gives a good foundation for the outline of what self-esteem is and what factors affect it. Credibility of Source: It looks like it's some sort of personal website; however, it does cite studies and seems to back up its statements with scientific data.

Title: Empathy, Mindblindness, and Theory of Mind Author: Lynne Soraya Date Published: May 19, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: An excellent overview of Theory of mind. The article also explains how researchers test for theory of mind. It links theory of mind to the concept of Empathy, and explores whether people with Asperger's lack empathy or simply the ability to read social cues. Several excellent links, quotes, and a diagram explaining how the topic is researched. How This Influenced My Thinking: I know of several families that have children diagnosed with Asperger's. The article raises the possibility that those children with Asperger's could benefit from learning how to read social cues, and that their ability to empathize could be fine. Better interpretation of social cues would help them with their theory of mind regarding how others feel. Credibility of Source: Comes from a published magazine, Psychology Today. Likely to be fairly credible.

Title:  Identity Development Throughout the Lifetime: An Examination of Eriksonian Theory Author: Justin T. Sokol Date Published: March 1, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Erikson's theories are relevant to almost all types of research on identity development. Identity development is a life-span process, as Eriksonian theories suggest. This particular publication is an in depth examination of Erikson's theories on identity development: identification in early childhood, Identity formation in adolescence, identity development in adulthood. How This Influenced My Thinking: I agree with the research: Identity development is an ongoing process that continues through adulthood. I see examples of this looking over my childhood, adolescence and adulthood so far. At 32 years old, I can honestly agree with Erikson's theories on identity development - I feel as though my identity (though does not change drastically anymore) certainly continues to develop. Credibility of Source:  This publication is from Graduate Journal of Counseling Psychology at Marquette University, so is likely highly credible

Title: Beginnings, Growth and Development Author: Dr. Mark Hill Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Many factors contribute to prenatal development: nutrition, health, environment, drug use, illness. Abnormalities are at greater risk of occurring during critical periods of development. This period is highest during the embryonic stage. By gathering research on what affects prenatal development, we can pinpoint when pregnant women are most at risk and the factors, thereby preventing congenital problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: It's very surprising how a span of 6 weeks can have such a life changing impact on a person before they're even born. It's crucial that women who are pregnant or may become pregnant be informed and get the proper care needed before and during a pregnancy. Credibility of Source: The publication comes form The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. This seems to have been created by one of the professors.

Title: Future Identities: Changing Identities in the UK - the next 10 years Author: Nicole Ellison Date Published: January 2013 Why Relevant & Summary: This paper gives a thorough and detailed review of how social media is continuing to influence personal identity and the concept of self. Its focus on social and psychological impact, show how the influence of social media is effecting and changing our culture and sense of self. Current data of emerging trends, is stated clearly, logically, and within the standards of psychological research. A handy table of contents allows the reader to explore varying and related sub-topics with ease. How this influenced my thinking: This paper presents many terms which are relevant to this topic, but of which I was previously unaware of. The writer cites other published articles dealing with this new phenomenon. Credibility of Source: Highly credible due to publishing by the UK's Government Office For Science, cited credible resources, and recent data

It makes sense and explains how hte theory was tested. How It Influenced My Thinking: I remember watching a TV show a while ago that showed this phenomenon in monkeys of some kind. I recall that this was new information to me, however I was not surprised. It makes total sense. Nature is brilliant. Credibility of Source: Very credible. Title: Bonding Before Birth Author: Not Available Date Published: Not listed, Website Copyright 2006 Why Relevant and Summary: It is relevant to the developing fetus and discusses the learning the can be relevant to the response the child has to the out side world after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thoughts only when speaking about how the mothers thoughts can affect the unborn baby after about 6 months because the mothers hormones cross the blood supply to the baby allowing the baby to be affected by these hormones. Credibility of Source: Not very credible

Title: Bonding with your baby Author: Kids Health. Reviewed by Larissa Hirsch, MD Date Published: January 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: In our format, he asks us to give information on bonding and survival after birth. This article talks about bonding and how it really affects both the child and the parent. Its relevant because it's an important part of pregnancy, communicating and bonding while in the womb. This article also gives examples of what a positive environment might look like when bonding has taken place in the womb, and what it looks like after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: It shows me that singing and talking to your belly is absolutely okay. Some people don't rub their belly or talk to their baby and sometimes, that can cause a slight disconnection in bonding when the baby is born. It will be something I keep in mind for my next pregnancy. Credibility of Source: This information is given on a Kids Health page and was reviewed by an M.D.

It talks about pregnancy, things to consider, possible locations for birth, and methods for birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: I hadn't realized how many different birth methods there were. Credibility of Source: It seems credible, the article is very informative and the website has a lot information on women's health

Title:What babies learn in the womb Author:Laura Flynn Mccarthy Date Published:nd Why Relevant and Summary:This article is relevant because it discusses how newborns prefer mom's voice over someone elses, proving that infants can distinguish between voices. This article discusses a study done on one day old newborns. They are given pacifiers and depending on the sucking pattern, they start the recording of mom's voice or another person's voice. After twenty minutes, they learned to use the sucking pattern that started the recording of mom's voice. How This Influenced My Thinking:Babies are born learning. Clearly they understand more than people realize. It is up to us to stimulate and progress their learning. Credibility of Source:This comes from parenting.com so I seems credible, however, their are no citations or references.

Title: Parenting -Child Development Prenatal Care and Development Author: Healthline Date Published: 2010 Why relevant and summary: This website is relevant in that it talks about the signs on how to determine whether one is pregnant and what to do after. This website continues by describing the stages of development and what to expect when expecting. It ends by discussing the importance of healthcare all around from environment to doctors visits. How this influenced my thinking: I was able to learn a little more on why it is imperative to consider all the different possibilities when having a child and how it is crucial that one sustains a healthy condition throughout their pregnancy in order to give their child the best outcome possible. Credibilty of Source: This source was reviewed by another party.

Title: Prenatal Development Author: Richard Parncutt Date Published: 2006 Why Relevant and Summary: This resource discusses prenatal development with a focus on the fetal sound environment. This is relevant because it directly discusses prenatal development and care. It also touches upon the emotional and physiological aspects of communication with a developing baby by using sound. How This Influenced My Thinking: I had no idea how much of an influence sounds had on a developing baby, and how early the influence begins. Credibility of Source: Excellent. Author is a professor who specializes in psychology of music.

Title: Applications and Utility of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Brian Lewthwaite (ed.) Date Published: Spring 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This journal from the Manitoba Education Research Network, summarizes several research studies that apply Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. One of the studies, The Importance of Local Environment for Promoting Student Engagement in Learning by Janet McVittie and Danette Senterre, is particularly interesting and relevant. This is a direct application of how the microsystems outside the classroom affect the microsystem of the classroom, and how the mesosystems and exosystems affect classroom engagement. When children come into the classroom, they bring with them the values and habits of their exosystem and participate in their classroom based on how they are situated in their other microsystems. (McVittie & Senterre) How This Influenced My Thinking: Based on personal experiences, I can understand how our circumstances in our mesosystems and Microsystems can affect our performance in school. At the age of 14, I became and orphan when my only parent died. In retrospect, this event and the subsequent events that resulted from it deeply affected my academic progress. In other words, the tragic events in my family microsystem had a major impact on my school microsystem, as well as on my various mesosystems. Credibility of Source: The University of Manitoba Centre for Research in Youth, Science Teaching and Learning seems like a highly credible source.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model of Child Development Author: Eastman Date Published: 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: The pdf file speaks about Bronfenbrenners theory and gives many relevant examples on how each system has an influence on the development of the child. How this influenced my thinking: I was able to get a more in depth understanding of Bronfenbrenners theory on influential factors that determines a child developmental outcomes. Credibility: it was a UW-Extension ABC project

Title: Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development Author: Devan Udall Date Published: June 25, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The information provided in this video is a clear, factual presentation of Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development. In chapter eight of our Human Development textbook we will be discussing adolescence and will go over theories surrounding morality, Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development is one of them. This video gives a brief introduction to Kohlberg's research and professional career. It presents The Stages of Moral Development as well as recorded interviews illustrating the Heinz Dilemma experiment. How This Influenced My Thinking: I found this reference video supporting some of my theories surrounding moral development. However, as I was doing more research I realized how many variables were not being considered in Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development. As I challenged Kohlberg's theory on its broader application I thought about what research methods could be used to provide supportive evidence. Credibility of Source: I have found additional reference material that supports the information provided in this video.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Theory- youtube (video) Author: kleinen2012 Date Published: April 8, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This video was produced by a Human Development student, and gives a great summary of Brofenbrenner's model, along with sharing clear and relevant diagrams and definitions. For the audio-visual learner, this is a great resource for gaining basic understanding of Brofenbrenner's Ecological Model. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me, as an auditory learner to better absorb the information. Credibility of Source: 8; It lists her references at the end of the video.
