University of Massachusetts Amherst is announcing a "new effort to recruit community college graduates to the state university's flagship campus." According to the article, there is already a state policy in place guaranteeing admission to most community college graduates who earn a 2.5 GPA and waiving tuition to those with a 3.0. This new effort will also offer priority registration and housing, as well as scholarships and special advising.

Central Piedmont Community College developed an Online Student Portal learning system to improve retention among its students. They have had success with the system (in use 2004-2008). Now, with a Next Gen grant, they will roll the system out to 6 additional local schools to see if they can match the retention improvements. The system is based both on learning styles and on frequent intervention by students and counselors.

President Signs Health Care & Ed. Reconciliation Bill into Law - 0 views

    From C-SPAN, March 30, 2010. Speech was given at the Alexandria, VA., campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). The President is introduced by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the Vice-President, and an instructor at NVCC. The President announced that Dr. Biden will host a national summit on community colleges at the White House this fall (see approx 18:10 on the video).

    A GSCC connection - NH (GSCC instructor) also teaches at NVCC and was present for the visit. From her comments: "Jill Biden introduced him and some of her developmental English students were sitting behind me. When the President explained the changes in Pell Grants, they stood and shouted "Thank You." I was really moved because I am sure these grants will make a big difference for them in the future."
