In the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin, the Community College Leadership Program (CCLP) was established in 1944. The program focuses on training community college leaders.

The Community College Research Center (CCRC) is part of the Insitute on Education and the Economy, Teacher's College, Columbia University. From their site: "CCRC"s mission is to conduct research on major issues affecting community colleges in the United States and to contribute to the development of practice and policy that expands access to higher education and promotes success for all students."

At North Virginia Community College, President Obama signs legislation that ends the bank-based lending system for student loans. The savings from ending this program will be used to provide spending on education. The president also announces that Jill Biden will lead a community-college summit at the White House in the fall.

University of Massachusetts Amherst is announcing a "new effort to recruit community college graduates to the state university's flagship campus." According to the article, there is already a state policy in place guaranteeing admission to most community college graduates who earn a 2.5 GPA and waiving tuition to those with a 3.0. This new effort will also offer priority registration and housing, as well as scholarships and special advising.

Studies conducted by MDRC have found that, "while students [in learning communities] do make academic gains, such as progressing more quickly through developmental courses, the gains don't persist beyond the semester students are involved in the learning community." Authors acknowledge that these are early findings and that later findings may prove different results.

Announcement of a Summary Report produced by Community College Research Center (CCRC) by Davis Jenkins, Shanna Smith Jaggars & Josipa Roksa, November 2009. The analysis looked at the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), studying a dataset of 24,140 first-time college students who enrolled in at least one VCCS course in summer or fall 2004. A brief post in which Jenkins talks about how community colleges' requirement of college-level teaching experience scares off (or at least causes concern) among some recent PhD seekers, who were under the impression that community colleges did not have stringent teaching experience requirements.

Central Piedmont Community College developed an Online Student Portal learning system to improve retention among its students. They have had success with the system (in use 2004-2008). Now, with a Next Gen grant, they will roll the system out to 6 additional local schools to see if they can match the retention improvements. The system is based both on learning styles and on frequent intervention by students and counselors.

A program of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Statway focuses on helping community college students learn basic skills in statistics, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning as part of a one-year pathway. The ultimate goal of this pathway is preparation for college-level statistics. This home page to Statway also includes links to the project blog (called Pathways Connection) and to the project's mailing list. There are 19 community colleges affiliated with this project.

From their About page, "The WIDE Research Center creates new knowledge about digital communication and promotes the transfer of this knowledge to school, workplace, and community contexts to promote learning, knowledge work, and citizenship."

From the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. A Networked Improvement Community (NIC) is aimed at dramatically increasing the proportion of community college students who are mathematically prepared to succeed.

Published by Center for Community College Student Engagement, 2010. This report looks at the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE), launched fall 2006. From the report, "To date, more than 91,000 students from 197 colleges in 37 states have participated in SENSE, thereby helping to create a wealth of new and actionable data about the entering community college student experience."

From C-SPAN, March 30, 2010. Speech was given at the Alexandria, VA., campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). The President is introduced by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the Vice-President, and an instructor at NVCC. The President announced that Dr. Biden will host a national summit on community colleges at the White House this fall (see approx 18:10 on the video).

A GSCC connection - NH (GSCC instructor) also teaches at NVCC and was present for the visit. From her comments: "Jill Biden introduced him and some of her developmental English students were sitting behind me. When the President explained the changes in Pell Grants, they stood and shouted "Thank You." I was really moved because I am sure these grants will make a big difference for them in the future."
