Competition for a Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere - 0 views

    The purpose of this FOA is to support the development of a Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Coordinating Center that will organize activities and provide research resources for clinician-investigators across the United States who are focusing their careers on aging research. This FOA is intended to build upon the substantial investments made by NIA through the GEMSSTAR program and related career development efforts by supporting expanded activities to reach a broader community of clinician-investigators. The specific goals of this initiative are to convey scientific and research knowledge on aging research; foster networking and collaboration between clinician-scientist leaders in aging research and clinician-investigators across specialties who wish to focus on aging research; provide mentoring and career development support for emerging clinician-scientists committed to pursuing aging research in their clinical specialty or discipline; and advance transdisciplinary research projects in aging.

    The Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (PRF) to highly qualified investigators within 3 years of obtaining their PhD to carry out an independent research program. The research plan of each Fellowship must address scientific questions within the scope of AGS disciplines.  The program supports researchers for a period of up to 2 years with Fellowships that can be taken to the institution or national facility of their choice. The program is intended to recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with experience in research that will broaden perspectives, facilitate interdisciplinary interactions and help establish them in leadership positions within the Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences community. Because the Fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their careers, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the availability of AGS Postdoctoral Research Fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the Fellows.

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF) Program oversees a portfolio of multi-user national facilities that are sponsored by NSF for use by the geosciences research community. Program management resides within AGS in the NCAR and Facilities Section (NFS) which provides a single point for coordination of planning and resources.

    The LAOF program enables geoscience research through the provision of specialized facilities, instrumentation, and field support services necessary to carry out the scientific field work associated with investigations of a wide range of geophysical phenomena. The program is actively involved in decisions about the acquisition, operation, maintenance, upgrading and replacement of these facilities based on input from the scientific community. LAOF funding supports both the planning for scientific field programs (e.g., experimental design, operational plans, logistical support) and the actual deployment of NSF-sponsored facilities.

    The U.S. Geological Survey, Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center, requires a cooperative agreement to Utah State University in support of joint research on the origin, character, and mineral potential of Proterozoic-age basement rocks and the nature of the Proterozoic-Paleozoic unconformity in northeastern Iowa.The Northeast Iowa Intrusive Complex (NEIIC) is composed of mafic Proterozoic rocks that may be related to the Midcontinent Rift System, and may have nationally significant mineral potential. However, the rocks are completely buried under hundreds of meters of younger sedimentary rocks, and very few boreholes penetrate the overlying sedimentary section. Studies of the NEIIC to date have relied almost entirely on geophysical data, but rigorous control on the geophysical interpretations is lacking. Further, the fundamental nature of the closely related Proterozoic-Paleozoic unconformity is weakly constrained in this region, specifically in relation to its hydrogeologic character, state of stress, thermal regime, and state of weathering.

    The objective is to offer funding opportunities for qualified youth conservation corps to engage youth ages 16-30 in work on BLM conservation-related projects. BLM has had a successful youth program over the past several years and we would like to continue with new funding opportunities and project. These projects will provide participants with a mix of work experience, education, training, and support services, as well as the opportunity to develop citizenship values and skills through service to their community and the United States. As the young men and women gain experience in natural and cultural resource management, they will also develop an appreciation for public lands and learn about conservation-related career fields.
