An interesting idea: student collaboration to lead and facilitate online discussions. This study says the student leaders elicited meaningful dialogue, high levels of participation and quality conversation.

Providing faculty resources and support to teach successfully online

I consider my classroom, in general, flipped. My general rule of thumb is that the more I talk the less they learn, so I really push the application process.

This is a quick overview to making videos using a technique called "pencasting". It's the technique used in many of the Khan Academy teaching videos. This report offers some observations on the use of multimedia resources in online courses. The focus is more on course development (both time investment and quality of materials produced) than on student experience or learning outcomes, but this can still be a valuable tool for instructors thinking about whether (and how) to use multimedia in their online course designs.

It's worth noting the distinction between for-profit colleges and universities, which are the real focus of this report, and online learning. If the two overlap significantly, they are not identical. It's also worth underlining what Roxanne said on the boards: the low rates of completion raise many questions, but they should not call into question the achievements of those who do successfully earn degrees from for-profit institutions.
