What is workflow? - Definition from Whatis.com - 1 views

  • definition - Workflow is a term used to describe the tasks, procedural steps,
  • organizations or people involved, required input and output information, and tools needed for each step in a business process. A workflow approach to analyzing and managing a business process can be combined with an object-oriented programming approach, which tends to focus on documents and data. In general, workflow management focuses on processes rather than documents. A number of companies make workflow automation products that allow a company to create a workflow model and components such as online forms and then to use this product as a way to manage and enforce the consistent handling of work. For example, an insurance company could use a workflow automation application to ensure that a claim was handled consistently from initial call to final settlement. The workflow application would ensure that each person handling the claim used the correct online form and successfully completed their step before allowing the process to proceed to the next person and procedural step. A workflow engine is the component in a workflow automation program that knows all the procedures, steps in a procedure, and rules for each step. The workflow engine determines whether the process is ready to move to the next step. Some vendors sell workflow automation products for particular industries such as insurance and banking or for commonly-used processes such as handling computer service calls. Proponents of the workflow approach believe that task analysis and workflow modeling in themselves are likely to improve business operations.

  • A workflow consists of a sequence of connected steps. It is a depiction of a sequence of operations, declared as work of a person, a group of persons,[1]
  • A workflow is a model to represent real work for further assessment, e.g., for describing a reliably repeatable sequence of operations. More abstractly, a workflow is a pattern of activity enabled by a systematic organization of resources, defined roles and mass, energy and information flows, into a work process that can be documented and learned.[3][4] Workflows are designed to achieve processing intents of some sort, such as physical transformation, service provision, or information processing.
  • The cultural impact of workflow optimization during this era can be understood through films such as Chaplin's classic Modern Times. These concepts did not stay confined to the shop floor. One magazine invited housewives to puzzle over the fastest way to toast three slices of bread on a one-side, two-slice grill. The book Cheaper by the Dozen introduced the emerging concepts to the context of family life.

With PerfectForms workflow software, however, creating an integrated, standardized workflow system is much less challenging. Unlike other workflow system software on the market, PerfectForms is designed to be used by those with no technical development skills; no programming is ever required. Instead, PerfectForms employs unique point and click features and unique mapping tools so just about anyone can design any kind of workflow system or applications."

Production Workflow Software Market Trends - 0 views

  • dvancements in technology and changing communication methods are among the growth drivers in this market. New software provides vast improvements in workflow efficiency as well as increased personalization of communications materials. The creative layout, variable data, and Web-to-print segments are expected to show high single-digit growth rates while multi-channel communications has the highest growth expectation at 22% average yearly growth rate.

"Like many industries, the print production workflow software market was affected by the recent economic decline. Many segments of the print production workflow market came near to a standstill during the first six months of 2009. Vendors were faced with lower demand due to market consolidation; high exit rates and bankruptcies of print service providers; as well as the postponement of investments due to the economic uncertainty, credit scarcity, and customers being in survival mode. However, the good news is the situation stabilized after the summer and sales picked up again in the third quarter, with the U.S. leading and Western Europe following according to InfoTrends' Global & North American Print Production Workflow Market Forecast: 2009-2014 and Global & Western Europe Print Production Workflow Market Forecast: 2009-2014."

What's the Difference Between Workflow and BPM? « Workflow Blog - 0 views

  • Workflow is concerned with the application-specific sequencing of activities via predefined instruction sets, involving either or both automated procedures (software-based) and manual activities (people work)…BPM is concerned with the definition, execution and management of business processes defined independently of any single application.  BPM is a superset of workflow, further differentiated by the ability to coordinate activities across multiple applications with fine grain control.

  • Much of what we do in the BPM/Workflow space has to due with bridging the gap between business silos within organizations. All businesses of a certain size have them, and in the majority of cases they contribute to inefficiency. However since all businesses have them, are business silos not always a bad thing. Therefore what should you look for to determine when bridging a silo is just, a bridge to far. Silos come into being for a number of reasons like: companies or generally hierarchical in nature, they may have had mergers and acquisitions, poor planning or just different requirements. Sometimes silos are formed instantly but generally they form over a period of time.

Apple based professional photographers tend to favor Aperture as it is strictly for the Mac and integrates well with iPhoto. The rest of the world favors Adobe Lightroom.

There isn't an answer to that question, bothhave their pluses plus a few minuses. For the PC users, you need to understand the Mac mentality, its slightly different but the "just" is rocking image management and quick on the fly image corrections and the abilty to output slideshows and photobooks lickidly split. Like I said, both are excellent, low cost complimentary additions to help with a higher volume workflow. Teamed up with Photoshop or even Elements, and you have real solid toolset for the busy photographer that wants to keep their images organized."
