Fascinating use of social network - Orkut and how much it is used in Brazil.

Orkut is the most widely used website in Brazil -- and holds the record as having the highest percentage of use of any website in any country. Orkut is Google's social network and is also very popular in India, Pakistan, and Brazil.

Interesting information on virtual reality.

Fascinating study that sounds like it is for just commercial use, but some great information on virtual reality is embedded. I'll be blogging some reflections on this this week.

School competitions now center around online websites, they used to just be on paper! What a difference to get to see what kids suggest, it means that their influence is felt far beyond the classroom and can even influence the scientists who view their work.

Contest to encourage student to create a vision of the future of technology. This site shows the inventions and the awards. This is a neat competition and you might want to plug in your math and science program, particularly the gifted program. Competitions help your top students reach higher and are a very important part of gifted programs (and others too!)

This is an example of social entrepreneurship and a new way that people are connecting online. This is a great organization (Discovery - discovery channel, etc.) and they have a great program.

My Dad has diabetes as did my grandfather. This is a great program and discovery does things right -- please consider letting your students join this great event. "Discovery Education has launched a program for high school health/science teachers designed to help educate students about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The site includes lesson plans (coming soon), lots of videos and multimedia interactives on digestion, blood glucose and diabetes. To recognize World Diabetes Day on November 14, all students with Type 1 diabetes are encouraged to create videos to "Shout Out" about diabetes and tell their story. For each video submitted, Novo Nordisk will make a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help fund research leading to a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Plus, each student who submits a video will receive a free Discovery DVD. "

By 1998, the Web was getting big enough that it was hard for human editors to keep up. That's when Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google and built a search engine that, by using a computer algorithm, could in theory scale to include an infinite number of Web sites. Google sent a spider into the Web that would index every page it crawled past.

Government organizations like the smithsonian are reaching out to educators and others with an online presence. This cool site has lesson plans and lots of great information for arts, science and technology, history and culture, and language arts.

You an use this site to "drop" or share files on the Internet. It only uses up to 100 MB of space but it still looks like a simple way to share. You can drop files by phone, email, web, widget or fax. Very interesting.

New way for people to share files and it allows sharing via a lot of different ways.

Web 3 -- what is it? What will it look like?

Web 3.0 and how the web is evolving is a part of current discussion. Some say Web 3D is more likely with Second Life like environments merging with the Semantic web. This is a great site for those working on inventing and predicting what will happen.

Fifty useful mind mapping tools has some cool software and sites I'll peruse. Have you used any of them that I should use? I've used MindMeister, and bubble.us as well as gliffy, but think I should try Mind42 and dabbleboard, perhaps.

The Premier Kristina Keneally does not rely on a notebook to communicate with the public - she uses Twitter. Some MPs use the social networking site to simply make announcements, but the Premier actively engages Twitter users who make contact with her.
