Radiation-free cancer scans may be on the horizon | Cutting Edge - CNET News - 0 views

  •
THis article introduces a new cutting edge idea that exposes cancer without the radiation that could cause cancer further down the line. i find this fantasic the treatment not only leaves out the harmful radiation but it is also just as effective if not more. Another plus is it is also about the same price. i find that for the people being scanned i would find it a great comfort to me that i don't increase my chances of getting cancer because i was scanned for cancer. So it appears the MRi appoarch is on the rise.

Government spying tools will worsen internet security - experts - 0 views

  •
The United States governments is spying on everyone, and the easiest way to monitor people is through the internet. Many people believe that one day the US government's way of monitoring people will be shared with or found out by a criminal organization. i believe that although it is important for that US governments to put surveillance they should just monitory anyone suspicious. Also i believe that if they spy on everyone it will become easier to find and hack them back. Personally i would not care if a government was watching my every move on the internet because i have nothing to hide. Finally i believe that most people would sleep better if the Government would tell the population if their spying program was compromised.

Climate change threatens to bring eradicated viruses back from the dead | The Verge - 0 views

The article talks about how Japan in the JAXA launched a rocket with NASA launched a rocket together to collect data on rainfall and snowfall, and Japan creates an anime on this. This isnèt really relevant for a bookmark but HEY its cool! Also i like anime. The article has anime and space tags for obvious reasons; it is about an anime based on a rocket to space. My thoughts on this are that i have to find this anime right away and i am wondering why they made an anime with a random rocket launch of NASA and JAXA. i just checked diigo and i didnt put these into the group -.-

Is Your ChIld Ready for a Cellphone? 4 QuestIons Parents Should Ask FIrst - 1 views

  •
Cellphones play a huge factor in our everyday life.  Everybody uses cellphones nowadays.  However, the real question is, when should a child receive a cellphone?  Rather, when should a parent give their a child a cellphone?  Everybody is different, so they have their own opinion as to when they are ready to receive a cellphone/give a cellphone.  A recent report shows that nearly half of the teens surveyed say they can't live longer than a week without their phones, and 36% said they check their phones at least every 10 minutes.  Of course, these habits don't develop within a day of course.  An American research market company polled parents on what they thought the most appropriate age for a child to receive their first cellphone.  Twenty-two percent of parents polled said they thought 10 was the right age, while 43% of the parents fell within the 10 to 12 age range.  i find this ridiculous, because not even i have my own cell phone, nor will i be receiving one in the near future.   in today's society, a phone is like a miniature computer that you can take anywhere with you.  Phones were originally used for making phone calls and giving parents feel a sense of security knowing they can contact their kids whenever and wherever.  However phones can also be a whole set of challenges to a parent.  it is an internet-enabled device with few parental controls, which could be one challenge.  it might also give a child access to inappropriate apps, the less-than-wholesome intentions of other people, from bullying to worse.   As a child's age increases, there comes many other challenges such as sexting or texting while driving. Personally, i feel the only time one can be ready for a phone, is when they prove that they are mature enough to handle such responsibility.  But that's just my side of the story.

How Much Would You Pay to Never See an Online Ad Again? - 0 views

  •
This article is introducing a new product that could possibly be put on the market soon. it is called AdTrap. You buy this device for $120 and it sits between your modem and router and blocks all kind of ads on the internet for all kind of devices. This device is in its working prototype stage and is on a crowd-funding site Kickstarter. if $150,000 worth of devices are pre-ordered by December 8th they will start shipping the device. it is like a small computer running the Linux OS and can be easily updated to black new kinds of ads. You can also have a list of websites where you do not want the ads blocked. This device is great for those who despise ads and just 10 hours after being launched they raised just over 10 percent of its goal.  This advertisement has to do with eLifestyle because this device can possibly change the way we spend time on our computers. Those who hate ads in front of videos and other side and popping up have an alternative for $120. Most people that use technology have at one point complained about advertisements and constant bombardment with these ads this is a way to protect yourself and possibly your kids from advertisements at least on the web. This also has to do with eLifestyle because if enough people buy this device and it becomes huge it can change the way websites make money or not make money because most websites rely on ads in order to be able to give people their services and posts.  if this device is shipped for those who pre-order it may be a big fail in the market because ads just may not be as annoying to some as they are to others or this can be a big success but in the long term be devastating for web sites because they will not be making money from ads anymore. i personally would not buy this device for $120 dollars because ads do not make me that mad and i have gone long enough without this device i can continue this way for a while. Also can change the websites that run because of ads and i wouldn't want that.

Gmail Becomes World's Top Email Service - 0 views

  •
Google's very own Gmail has overtaken Hotmail as the world's most-used email service. ComSorce released its data confirming that Gmail had 287 million unique worldwide visitors last month, while Hotmail received 256 million. i personally have both accounts but i use Gmail as my more personal email than my Hotmail. i always thought Gmail was ahead of the game by far. However, after seeing this statistic, Gmail is only a hair more popular than Hotmail. Don't forget Yahoo. in third place, with 281 million visitors, Yahoo is top three on the most visited email service.i believe that after Gmail has finally surpassed Hotmail, the gap of visitors between Gmail and Hotmail and even Yahoo will increase drastically with Gmail in first place by far.

Illegal musIc downloads dropped In 2012, says report | Internet & MedIa - CNET News - 0 views

  •
A recent survey has proven that the downloading of illegal music has decreased by 26 percent from 2011 to 2012. it seems that fewer people are illegally downloading music for three specific reasons. With the introduction of P2P music sites a few years ago, illegally downloaded music was becoming more and more common. Since, the music industry has responded very negatively trying to shut down these sites.A famous example was the shutting down of the huge P2P site and software, Limewire, after they were found guilty of copyright infringement. Limewire had millions of users that ripped off artists music millions of times and the record companies were not just going to stand there and watch. People are also not downloading illegal music as much because of the new music streaming services, such as Songza.  These sites stream music to many computers and devices free of charge for the listener to enjoy. The last reason that people are downloading illegal music less is because of the malware and spyware risks that downloading this music poses. You may think you are downloading your favourite techno song when really you are downloading a trojan virus that will steal all of your passwords and personal information. i think this is a sign that people are finally realizing that this is an immoral act and they are taking away money from the artists that make the songs. i personally have bought all of the songs i own and i rarely use the music streaming services. Hopefully by 2014, there will be no illegally downloaded music by anybody.

Why bother with passwords when you can have passthoughts? | Technically incorrect - CNET News - 0 views

  •
This article is about a new concept developed by Berkeley that allows users to emit their password through their thoughts. This concept uses a technology known as Neurosky, and the actual headsets that use this technology look like cat ears. This device is still in testing, but for those eager people who want their thoughts converted into Passthoughts, they can get their hands on the device for a very pricey $199. i don't believe that this invention will "take off" because it doesn't seem very practical in real world situations when typing in a password can be as quick as 2 seconds. However this is a very imaginative invention and will most likely inspire people to create products just like this one. i chose the eLifestyle tag for this post because it may become a fashion trend in some part of the world, (Asia maybe) and people will truly enjoy using this product. i think it is safe to say though that i will not be walking into school wearing cat ears in the future!

Facebook Addiction - 0 views

  •
This article disuses how some people (mostly teens) have been getting "addicted" to facebook. in this article a girl named Newton (not her real name) says that "i can go a whole day without Facebook," she said. "But i've never made it through an entire weekend." Although there are no statistics on "Facebook addiction" -- it isn't an actual medical diagnosis therapists say they're seeing more and more people like Newton who've crossed the line from social networking to social dysfunction. "Last Friday, i had three clients in my office with Facebook problems," said Paula Pile, a marriage and family therapist in Greensboro, North Carolina. "it's turned into a compulsion -- a compulsion to dissociate from your real world and go live in the Facebook world." Facebook can lower social interaction among teens, as well as lower their study time, and family time. i think people shouldn't take facebook this seriously. i personally do not consider facebook as such an important thing in your life. Facebook is supposed to be used to check emails, stay in touch with your friends etc. Not to waste countless hours on games and other apps on facebook, just going through people's pictures and profiles. instead there is so many other things to do with your life.

Mashable Poll: Majority Says No to Under-13 Facebook Users - 0 views

  •
Over the past few years, Facebook has grown to become one of the largest social networking sites in the world. People everywhere, young or old, have leapt at this opportunity to connect with friends or family from all over. This article brings up the possibility of creating a Facebook option that is available specifically for under 13 users as the current Facebook is only supposed to be available to users over 13. This new option would allow parents to create a link to their child's website and edit the Facebook Timeline options to whatever they think is appropriate. However, this possibility is met with a lot of opposition. People believe that allowing kids younger than 13 onto this site could be risky as they would be more susceptible to the dangers of cyber bullying and abuse. They believe that kids would simply be too young to understand the dangers of the internet and as a result would not know how to stay safe. Letting kids go on social networking sites like Facebook at such a young age is a huge decision. How do you know what is the right one? Despite the over 13 rules on Facebook, there are still thousands of young kids on this site that had simply lied about their age. it isn't hard to get onto this site. No matter what we do, with or without this new Facebook option, there will undoubtedly be young kids on Facebook. This fact is unavoidable. That is why i think that this alternate Facebook for children is not necessarily a bad idea. if we can't keep kids off of Facebook then we might as well work to make a safer version of it for them. Although, i don't condone young kids using this site, i am aware of the fact that we can never keep them all away from it and if that's the case then we might as well do all we can to protect them while on it. The growing world of technology is going to reach the younger children at some point and instead of trying to shield them from this other world and forcing them to explore it behind our backs, i thin

k we should find safer ways for them to discover this cyber world and educate them on its dangers. This article highlights people's concerns about rapidly growing social networks in the cyber world and its expansion to target younger children. it simply gives us a look at how much Facebook has really grown and what they are willing to do to keep it growing. it has grown so quickly and so has its number of users. it is only natural that young kids want to see and learn about what has fascinated so many of older people.

Is It Immoral to Own an IPhone 5? - 0 views

  •
With the thin, sleek design, the shiny screen, and the convenient touch screen, the iphone has grown to become one of the most wanted phones in our country. Behind the high-tech phones and tablets though there's a much more serious issue. iphones are often created in factories in China that exploit their workers. Things like child labor and abuse are practiced often in these factories. However, this article didn't only bring up the issue of human rights violations, but also our role in it. in the past, companies like Nike have been forced to improve the quality and treatment in these factories after many people boycotted the brands once discovering the ethical issues in the production process. We have not let the exploitation of workers in China pass before, so why are we doing it now with these Apple products. Every time we lay down our money and pick up a new iphone or ipad, we are encouraging this type of production and becoming a part of it. Even our simple, silly complaints about the Apple products can make the conditions worse for those poor workers. They are forced to work even harder and longer, no matter how tired, underpaid and overworked they already are. Has it become important for us to own the best phone, that the rights and sufferings of other human beings no longer matters? Why are we not taking the action necessary to help those workers and send a clear message of opposition? Before, reading this article i also wanted an iphone. it's a great phone, very convenient and high-tech. Knowing the conditions these phones are made in though has started to really make me doubt what i used to consider an amazing phone. it's an ethical issue. Do i want this phone so badly that i'm willing to turn a blind eye to the places it came out of? What scared me was that as much as i knew what the clear answer was, it was still a hard decision to make. Exploiting other humans is wrong and no matter how big Apple is, they are not an exceptio

How Evil is Your Smartphone? - 0 views

When we're looking for new smart phones we often look at things like speed, convenience, size and other features. When we see all these new smart phone products in stores we don't really stop and think about who made it. All we see is this polished, new phone and that's all we ever try to see. However, this article forces you to look past those pristine products and see the hidden reality. This post shows the rankings of various phone brands based on their impact on human rights, animal rights, the environment and other ethics. Out of a possible score of 20, all the brands fell quite short with the highest score being 10.5. it brings up the various human rights violations of different companies and makes you wonder why such successful companies like Apple are still setting such a low standard for labor conditions. Living in our comfortable first world country, we don't see all the human rights violations and abuse that occurs in other countries. i was surprised to learn that in a Nokia factory, many people were hospitalized for lead poisoning after being told that lead wasn't harmful. The lives of these workers are put at risk every day, as they work to create our smart phones. This article makes you think a lot about our world's reliance on technology. in our country, we only see the positive side of technology. Around the world though, there's a whole other side to the story. People work in dangerous conditions and are abused often while they create our smart phones. it really makes you see these products in a whole other light. After reading this article, i see more when i look at a smart phone. i wonder what happened to the people that made this phone or how they're living now. Our world is changing because of the introduction of technology. it has made our life so much easier, but we have to remember that this can sometimes come at the cost of another human or animal's dignity and sometimes even their life.

Is TextIng ManglIng the EnglIsh Language? [INFOGRAPHIC] - 0 views

  •
Texting is one of the most popular ways of communicating with other people. However, do we really benefit from it? One could argue that it is convenient, but others believe that the language people, especially the youth, use in texts affect their grammar. Some might even say that sometimes they include abbreviations and slang such as b/c, r, and u, in their English assignment without even noticing the problem, i know i have.  in 2011, an estimate of eight trillion text messages were sent, and those between the ages of 18 and 29 make up 95% of the texting population. Many are concerned about the future of the English language since so many people are fond of texting. There was even a National Texting Championship in 2012 that was won by 17-year-old Austin Wierschke who was able to text 149 words in 39 seconds. it seems that texting have become an important part of many lives. Some abbreviations have become so popular that even the Oxford English Dictionary has including them into their dictionaries making abbreviations such as LOL, OMG, FYi, TMi, and BFF, official to the English language. in my opinion, texting is not a crime. it is a convenient and effective way of communicating with other people. i believe that there is nothing wrong with using abbreviations in texts as long as it does not affect the way i write.

This article is about how youtube will be offering a 3D option for their videos. Viewers can choose whether or not they want to watch the videos in 3D. i think that its really cool what youtube is doing, and i think many people will watch their videos in 3D. However the picture quality and the 3D aspect of the video may not be very good and people will not use the 3D option. i personally am not a fan of 3D, but i think the rest of society like it and will be really excited to have 3D youtube videos.
