In First Post-Election Interview, Paul Ryan Blames Loss on Unexpected 'Urban' Turnout - 0 views

  •
Paul Ryan claims that he and Romney lost because of the unexpected "urban" voters ("urban" being a dog whistle for "black"), rather than because of his policies (which exit polls showed were central for many voters)

Harvard Implicit Association Test - 3 views

This is the Harvard IAT. It reveals some of our unconscious biases. I give this to you so you can see that many of the things we react to are unconscious. This is not to say we are sexist, racist, ageist etc., but to show that society contributes to what we believe and shape many of our perceptions unconsciously. I'll post some Disney videos as well to show how young this training begins. I'd also encourage you to watch the video post "A Girl Like Me" with the Clark Doll studies in it. It begins to answer where ideas of raceism and sexism and stereotypes come from. VERY FEW people score in the neutral ranges on all these tests. I flat out couldn't be more biased on work/gender. I have no idea where that came from. But these are interesting and revealing to take. I hope you will take these.

Class Discrimination Can Harm Health - Psych Central News - 1 views

  •
A great article and a great topic. If we get time, I'll show you a film called "Unnatural Causes" that confirms this. Class and race are major determinants in health. It is also a great research project. I'll see if I can find "When the Bough Breaks" a sub-chapter of "Unatural Causes" (which I can't italicize here...) and post it.

A racial attack in Virgina and a possible obstruction of justice - 1 views

A white male and female are attacked by a group of black men. I find the actions surrounding this interesting. One of them is how the newspaper employer of the two attacked didn't publish the story till 2 weeks later.

I am interested in this story as well. The definition of a "Hate Crime" is hotly debated. I was origionally invented to protect minorities who were persecuted, so the idea that the majority (white people) could be vitctim to it does not necessarily fall withing its boundaries. O'Reilley does some interesting things rhetorically here. He makes a lot of assumptions and inferences but does not provide facts. He assumes he is talking to an audience who agrees with him. He implies people of color get special treatment and white people are victims of this under the guise of saying everyone should get equal treatment. He fails to note that people of color do not receive equal treatment under the law. This is a crucial difference between positions on the political spectrum. I think what is most appealing about O'Reilley's rhetoric is that he says he just wants justice for everyone. A great article to talk about!! Thanks for the post Katelynn.

This is to go with Baylee's posting. It is a six minute excerpt from a video I have called "Unnatural Causes" that looks a how class and race lead to poor health outcomes and early death rates. This little clip looks at how black women have the highest infant mortality rate in the nation.

"Hang in There Obama" Sign w/ Noose: Man says not offensive - 0 views

  •
This is posted here in Wisconsin and was a lead story on last night's local news. Is this hate speech? See picture of the sign above. The man says he supports the President and it is a showing of support. Is he simply unaware of the connotations of putting a noose on a sign for a black man? For any person? Or is he lying? See if you can follow the story. Will he have to take it down or is it protected by the First Amendment. Should it be classified as Hate Speech?

White Students in Blackface Reenact Chris Brown-Rihanna Fight - COLORLINES - 1 views

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/02/ghettothemed-compton-cookout-party-raises-ire-at-uc-san-diego.html This reminds me of when a UCLS frat held a "Ghetto/Crack" cookout Party during Black History month. It was hugely insensitve and racially demeaning. They thought it was funny. Stereotypes were the joke of the party. You don't see people of color holding parties mocking the way white people live. The site a posted is just one story about this. And this is but one instance of what is a disturbing trend.

Latest evidence in Trayvon Martin case - 5 views

I thought this article was interesting because it shows how this is not a clear cut case. There are many different stories, and this article looks at most of them.
  •
Hi, This just puts us in the search page of Lexis/Nexis. What you need to do is search for the story out in Google and post the actual link to it from there. Thanks! We'd really like to read this!

Walter Mosley on Trayvon Martin Case and Racial Identity - 38 views

Jadyn, This is an excellent article that hits on so many issues having to do with race. Who gets to be "white," how do we define "white," does the color of the individuals involved in an altercation/homocide affect who is guilty or innocent? If you haven't chosen an article yet, I'd take a serious look at this one. I'd like to come back to this one for discussion or use it for the next section. Great job posting a complex article.
