This might be useful or interesting to those exploring race and presidential elections. Fowl language

I wonder how many of them actually voted and have reasonable opinion, except racial slurs.

Dr. King, Race, Politics, and a Colorblind Society " The Color Line - 0 views

Today we celebrate Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and legacy as a national holiday. I would like to use this occasion to reflect a little bit on one part of Dr. King's dream and how far we have come toward accomplishing it.

Why it Costs More to Adopt a White Baby - ABC News - 2 views

  •
It's amazing how your race affects you as soon as you are born. Here is a good article about adoption cost and why it costs more to adopt a white baby.

This is horrifying and would make a great research topic. I've seen a lot of things teaching this class, but never something like this.

I work down by Madison where its pretty diverse at a grocery store and I see this happen all the time when consumers come through my line vs. coming through a fellow Latina or African American or Asian cashiers line. The conversations that customers have with cashiers of different race are suprizingly different and can be quite offensive.

Race- The Power of an Illusion - 1 views

  •
This is a clip from a series of three videos that are EXCELLENT. I love showing these in class, but it is hard to find time. If you all would like to see them, we could get together a group over a weekend and watch one of them and have a discussion. If anyone is interested in this, let me know and we'll organize this. Informal groups are one of the great ways to begin having converstations. If someone from each class would volunteer to gather a group and organize people who would like to attend, we could begin watching some movies and videos together!!

Maryland Officer Pistol Whips Innocent Teenager with Gun - 0 views

This story/video doesn't pertain to the Trayvon Martin case but I found it very interesting because it just goes to show that people of the African American race are followed more closely than those of the White race just like McIntosh described in her article. I feel that we could make some big connections between this case and the Trayvon Martin case along with racism throughout the world.

Class Discrimination Can Harm Health - Psych Central News - 1 views

  •
A great article and a great topic. If we get time, I'll show you a film called "Unnatural Causes" that confirms this. Class and race are major determinants in health. It is also a great research project. I'll see if I can find "When the Bough Breaks" a sub-chapter of "Unatural Causes" (which I can't italicize here...) and post it.

This is to go with Baylee's posting. It is a six minute excerpt from a video I have called "Unnatural Causes" that looks a how class and race lead to poor health outcomes and early death rates. This little clip looks at how black women have the highest infant mortality rate in the nation.

Taking Martin Luther King Jr. at his words - CNN.com - 1 views

  •
After our discussion in class about the MLK Jr. monument I was interested and found this article. I like this one because of the background knowledge it gives. I also like how the author shares the controversy at the beginning and at the end ties in how the author thinks MLK Jr. would have felt about the way his monument represented himself and his beliefs.
  •
This shows how the Monument became about contingent issues in a way that many would not have expected. The article is a great overview of the major controversies surrounding it. Positioning in relation to other monuments, the quote, the speech the three blocks of marble are derived from, how MLK is coming forth from the stone, even his stance are all rhetorical decisions that have been questioned. Nice Job Anna!

New Report Looking at Increase in School Segragation - 1 views

  •
It's long, it's important, and it's disturbing. We are seeing more and more segragation by race in the US. Brown vs. Board of Education was supposed to bring an end to that over 50 years ago, instead it seems as if this court ruling never happened.

For Sun Village and Littlerock, historic distrust persists - 0 views

  •
I thought this was an informative article because it tells people that even today there is still segregation going on. I thought it wasn't fair at all that Sun Village has never been treated equally with Littlerock because of racial differences between the two villages.
