BEIJING -- The online version of China's Communist Party newspaper has hailed a report by The Onion naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" - not realizing it is satire. I thought this was really funny and wanted to share!
This also shows a real lack of rhetorical and cultural awareness. The fact that the readers of this can't detect satire is a sure sign that they are not reading this article within a cultural context and don't understand its irony. Similarly Iran's media ran a story about how the average, white, rural American would rather vote for their leader than Barak Obama because Iran's leader took "diplomacy and foreign affairs seriously." This too was taken from a satire done by The Onion.
