Hand, John O. "Futurism in America." Art Journl 41.4 (1981): 337-42. JSTOR. Web. 31 Oct. 2010. This article is about the transition of Futurism from the East to America. The development of Futurism was caused by the influence from the Futurist Manifestos and paintings. F.T. Marinetti's Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism sparked the movement and through the use of variety of magazines and newspapers, it spread quickly. The article includes a summarized interview of Andre Tridon analyzing specific ways in which this movement affected the culture of the early 1900's. Tridon gives specific newspaper articles that are a direct result of the Futurism movement. By 1913 Futurism had made its impact and it seemed that it would not disappear very easily.

Rorem, Ned. "The Music of the Beatles." Music Educators Journal 55.4 : 33-34+77-83. JSTOR. Web. 15 Nov. 2010. This article answers many questions many people may have about the Beatles and their coming to America from Liverpool, England. The article strongly supports the musicality of the Beatles, stating that it is far superior to any other musical band in America during the 1960s. The Beatles were truly superior because their music can be taken-in by people of all ages and across generations. The lyrics to the songs of the Beatles are more like poems that are touching, cleaver, meaningful. The key to the success of the Beatles, is that the band worked together not only to perform amazing music, but to also create it.

Gower Price, Charles. "Sources of American Styles in the Music of the Beatles." American Music 15.2 (1997) : 208-232. JSTOR. Web. 15 Nov. 2010. This article explores the American influences in the Beatles music. The band took in a range of influences from American mainstream pop and rock and roll musicians including: Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. The Beatles first debuted in America on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City. The article suggests that British rock derived from American music. The article provides information of the Beatles cover on artists such as: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly. It also includes quotes from Paul McCarthy and John Lennon on how they were inspired by these artists. With the combination of so many artists and genres of music, the Beatles were able to diversify their sound so that they can relate to all of their fans.

Martin, Marilyn. "Art Deco Architecture in South Africa." The Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts 20 (1994): 8-37. JSTOR. Web. 16 Nov. 2010.\n\nThis source focuses on a location that is not usually associated with Art Deco: South Africa. There is mention notonly of the designers of the art, but also of the architects who were actually building the structures. Quotes from architechs about the buidings as well as pictures are included. This article does a great job of using descriptions and imagery to describe the buildings. This article was very interesting because it is not common knowledge that Art Deco was popular in South Africa and it was interesting to learn about the history of the movement there.

This article focuses on an Art Deco exhibit in a London museum. Many examples of Art Deco are described through explaining what the exhibit consisted of. Through describing Art Deco, the article makes the differences clear between both the Art Noueau and Modernism movements. Several designers, fans and examples of Art Deco are listed. This article was helpful because through describing the exhibit, different examples and mediums of Art Deco are explained.

Joanna Demers. Sampling the 1970s in Hip-Hop. Popular Music, Vol. 22, No. 1 (Jan., 2003), pp. 41-56. JSTOR. Web. 16 Nov. 2010 This article examines the beginning of Hip Hop. It shows where its influences came from and how they translated into what hip hop is today. It shows the founding fathers and the hoops they had to jump through in order to gain respect in the music industry.

Jonas, Oswald and Ludwig van Beethoven. "A Lesson with Beethoven by Correspondence." The Musical Quarterly 38.2 (1952): 215-21. JSTOR. Web. 16 Nov. 2010. This article begins with a small overview of Beethoven's work. The author also admires Beethoven for his incredible work and mentions the immense impact he has had on many composers, not only in the Romantic Era, but all composers. The author even calls Beethoven the "most universally admired composer." The true body of this article is, in essence, what the title says; it is "a lesson with Beethoven," where he has laid out pieces of his work and dissects it for the reader.

This article goes through the differences between Art Deco and Art Noueau with the specific focus on lighting. The way the article picks one specific element to compare makes the difference between the two styles very obvious. One major difference is that the Art Noueau lamps needed to be turned on to be seen as art where the Art Deco lamps were pieces of art without even being in use. Several specific designers were descibed as well as their lighting pieces. The article was very interesting, because lighting is not something that is usually thought of as art but it can be if seen through an Art Deco lense.

McCarthy, David.  "Andy Warhol's Silver Elvises: Meaning through Context at the Ferus Gallery in 1963".  The Art Bulletin, vol. 88, No. 2 (2006): 354-372.  Print. This article focuses on Andy Warhol's influence across the country.  He had recently emerged as one of the most prominent pop artists from coast to coast.  It talks about his anticipation of the display of his second exhibition at the prominent Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.  It also talks about how although he was an artist highly associated with particular style, each piece of his artwork held its own.

Casteras, Susan P. "Pre-Raphaelite Challenges to Victorian Canons of Beauty." Huntington Library Quarterly 55.1 (1992): 13-35. JSTOR. ITHAKA. Web. 26 Oct. 2010. This article is about how the Pre-Raphaelite school of painting challenged Victorian notions of beauty. Their depictions of reality as it was ran contrary to their contemporaries ideals, which strived for perfection. The Pre-Raphaelites showed their subjects with accurately-colored skin and irregularly-shaped heads, as all human heads are. They were on the forefront of what would come to be acceptable; phrenology and the idea that you could judge an individual by his or her appearance were gaining in popularity.

This is a review on the pop-art artist Roy Lichtenstein. The review starts out by saying that Roy Lichtenstein is one of the first people to have a massive exhibit while he is still alive, and one would think that his art would be amazing because of this (one critic in particular does not like his work and calls it dumb and awkward.) The author of this review goes on to tell us a little bit about Lichtenstein's life, his style and his artwork. She then talks about the art that Roy Lichtenstein creates, "it would seem quite dull if it were not for the jazzy images he has appropriated from a wide range of twentieth-century sources in both high and low art." This article is a good starting point about getting to know the artist and how his art is viewed.

Capell, Richard. "Music & Letters." A Quarterly Publication 19.4 (1938): 375-90. JSTOR. Web. 18 Nov. 2010. Very detailed descriptions of Beethoven's physical characteristics as well as ones that are similar to his father are stated at the beginning of this article. The article is essentially a summary of Beethoven's musical compositions. To accompany the text, there are a few pictures of lines of his music. The author classifies the last years of Beethoven's life into 2 categories: heroically active and introspective. This article also describes how Beethoven felt immense pressure to make his music conform to the style of that time.

This article analyzes two types of analysis found in the lyrics of the Beatles' music. Stylometric analysis studies the lyrics and the length the lines in the song. Emotional Stylometric analysis analyzes the tone and emotion that one feels when listening to particular lyrics. Emotional analysis also includes the composition of each song. The article compares and contrasts the two main members of the Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCarthy. Together the two composed over 150 songs throughout the history of the Beatles. The article references many other books and articles about the dynamic duo.
