Music Sampling in Hip Hop /Pop Music: Music Sampling in Pop Music Hits - 1 views

I am actually thinking of focusing my project on music sampling and how artists get permission to sample various songs. This website is cool because it gives you a list of different songs that have been sampled in the past. Some songs I had no idea were samples, I thought they were original songs.

2 Live Crew, Weird Al Yankovic, and the Supreme Court on Parody | LegalZoom - 0 views

  •
Lovers of offbeat music and hard-core rap would probably never use the names "Weird Al Yankovic" and "2 Live Crew" in the same sentence. Yet, they have something very important in common. The law protects their use of other people's musical works. The reason is that courts consider both 2 Live Crew's rap combined with pop music riffs and Weird Al's combination of everything... to be parodies, which are protected under fair use doctrine. from LegalZoom.com

This might be interesting to those of you who are doing research projects on music copyright laws/ parodys, etc. I suggest watching Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" music video before watching this if you haven't already, otherwise, it's not as funny.

I had actually never watched the full video of "Bad Romance" and I loved it and the remake. I thought it was really creative... thanks for posting!

Soundtracks vs. Comebacks: Music Sampling Gets Scored - 0 views

  •
This opinion site relates well to my topic; what constitutes music sampling. Musicians are trying to get money from other musicians for copyright infringement... but sometimes it is only two notes that they say were copied. How does court rule out the real copyright infringement cases from the cases that are just musicians trying to make a few extra bucks.

Considering our brief discussion about copyrighted material, I thought this link might provide an interesting perspective. Negativeland is a group of 'musicians' who splice copyrighted material together to create songs. They have faced a number of lawsuits, but continue to produce music despite widespread criticism.

A mashup artist that combines multiple songs to create each of his tracks. This is different than DJing. On average, he uses 21 songs for each one of his. His performances are featured in the documentary I posted earlier, "RIP: A Remix Manifesto". It's interesting to look at his music as a prime example of postmodernism and what that all means in terms of copyright infringement.
