A database could save your career - 0 views

  •
This article is about the use of online databases for professional research. The author explains how university databases make documents available to researchers that would have taken years to access otherwise. Essentially, one can do research in hours that would have taken an entire career to conduct decades ago.

SocialMarker.com allows one to submit a bookmark to 49 of the top social bookmarking sites. This is infinitely simpler than downloading a toolbar for every bookmarking site and submitting bookmarks to each one individually. Bookmarkers everywhere can easily be made aware of new products, breaking news, or vital information.

Checks and balances: how the internet can correct its own mistakes over time - 0 views

  •
ConspiracyScience.com is run by Edward Winston, a software engineer whose hobby is debunking various conspiracy theories using knowledge and research. This page debunks the Zeitgeist film, linked below. Winston is not alone in discrediting the Zeitgeist movement - some internet message boards are devoted entirely to debunking conspiracy theories. These are great examples of the internet's ability to correct mistakes over time, eg: Zeitgeist convinced millions of viewers to believe untrue facts and theories - websites like ConspiracyScience.com convinced millions of others that Zeitgeist is unreliable.

Despite its usefulness, the internet can be an extremely misleading and untrustworthy p... - 0 views

Zeitgeist is a documentary film produced by Peter Joseph, released in 2007. It outlines the many ways in which information has been repressed by governments and religions over centuries to maintain control over the public. The film went viral shortly after its release, thanks to the internet. Unfortunately for Peter Joseph, countless debunking websites and smear campaigns have been launched to discredit the documentary. This scenario is a great example of how social movements can be created and driven by the internet, only to be killed later by the internet.

Though self improvement and self help books often provide corny or cliched advice, valubale knowledge often exists underneath. SolveYourProblems.com boasts a vast array of topics that one can research, from job interview advice to marriage counseling.

Obtaining knowledge with the internet - 0 views

SelfGrowth.com is one of many websites that make it possible for someone to research specific skills or techniques, such as lie detection. I find it interesting that the internet makes obscure information readily available. Decades ago it would have been fairly difficult to find books related to lie detection, or many of the other topics listed on Selfgrowth.com.

Design your own merchandise and sell it online - 0 views

Before the internet became popular, the only way to get custom printed t-shirts or merchandise was to physically go to some kind of specialty store. Cafepress.com allows you to create your own designs and print them on any number of items. The most interesting part is that all content is public, so that others can see your designs and buy them if they want. Thus, ordinary people now have the opportunity to design clothes from home, and possibly sell some as well.

On Demand Books - 1 views

  •
The idea behind companies like "on demand books" is to preserve books as digital files and print them as they are needed. If you want to buy a book that is out of print, they can make you a brand new copy. This is a good example of how the internet is changing the way books are distributed.

Steve Albini is an infamous record producer, perhaps most famous for his work with Nirvana on their album "in Utero". This article outlines the methods record companies use to seduce rock bands, essentially making them slaves of the industry. Albini represents the many ways in which the music industry is changing to meet customer and artist needs, considering the recent explosion of file sharing.

Considering our brief discussion about copyrighted material, I thought this link might provide an interesting perspective. Negativeland is a group of 'musicians' who splice copyrighted material together to create songs. They have faced a number of lawsuits, but continue to produce music despite widespread criticism.
