Despite its usefulness, the internet can be an extremely misleading and untrustworthy p... - 0 views

Zeitgeist is a documentary film produced by Peter Joseph, released in 2007. It outlines the many ways in which information has been repressed by governments and religions over centuries to maintain control over the public. The film went viral shortly after its release, thanks to the internet. Unfortunately for Peter Joseph, countless debunking websites and smear campaigns have been launched to discredit the documentary. This scenario is a great example of how social movements can be created and driven by the internet, only to be killed later by the internet.

Checks and balances: how the internet can correct its own mistakes over time - 0 views

  •
ConspiracyScience.com is run by Edward Winston, a software engineer whose hobby is debunking various conspiracy theories using knowledge and research. This page debunks the Zeitgeist film, linked below. Winston is not alone in discrediting the Zeitgeist movement - some internet message boards are devoted entirely to debunking conspiracy theories. These are great examples of the internet's ability to correct mistakes over time, eg: Zeitgeist convinced millions of viewers to believe untrue facts and theories - websites like ConspiracyScience.com convinced millions of others that Zeitgeist is unreliable.

We Feel Fine / by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar - 0 views

  •
Internet art piece by Johnathan Harris and Sep Kamvar. Scroll down and click on "Interactive Version" to see it. What is it? Well, as stated on their "Mission" page: "We Feel Fine is an exploration of human emotion on a global scale. Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved."

Obtaining knowledge with the internet - 0 views

SelfGrowth.com is one of many websites that make it possible for someone to research specific skills or techniques, such as lie detection. I find it interesting that the internet makes obscure information readily available. Decades ago it would have been fairly difficult to find books related to lie detection, or many of the other topics listed on Selfgrowth.com.
