'Sister Wives' family to challenge bigamy law - Entertainment - Reality TV - TODAY.com - 0 views

  •
The famous reality TV show 'Sister Wives' is using their show to not only educate America about their religious lifestyle, but to help fight to let it be legal once again. Polygamy was outlawed in the 1890s, but it is still practiced today by many Mormon families. The religious practice has to be carefully done in secret for the fear of being convicted. The author states that Mormons just want to freely practice their faith and be left alone about it without legal consequences.
  •
I watched the first season of Sister Wives on Netflix, and, without voicing my personal opinions on the subject, I was really surprised that people are still practicing polygamy.

The Crusades - 0 views

  •
this page explaines how christians pillaged and took turkish held jerusalem in the name of god. this inccident and several similar inccidents shortly after were known as the crusades. i wanted to show this article to the class because it shows how christian extremists killed innocent people in the name of god and how even in the distant past they were people who believed it was ok to kill thousands of people in the name of their god
  •
i figured this article would be a stretch for the assignment but i believe that the crusades are a major example of the violation of religious freedoms and how religious extremism can do extensive harm reguardless what religion the extremists believe in

Will the Catholic Church Win Its Suits Against the Obama Contraception Mandate? - US Ne... - 0 views

  •
You will find this article is comparable to oral contraception law, but also deals with the religious organization should be exempt from providing their employees with birth control. Here is a something I found interesting " It argues that while churches themselves are exempt from providing birth control to employees free of charge, "religious schools, hospitals, and social services don't qualify as religious, and must therefore provide these drugs and procedures."

Marriage for Same-Sex Couples | American Civil Liberties Union - 1 views

  •
Under equal protection, same sex couples should have the freedom and support to marry their loved ones. Religious faiths that are opposed to the idea are free to not support the couples. Under DOMA each state was given the right to define marriage.
  •
If same sex couples meet the set forth requirements to be a common law couple they should be able to marry and be treated equally.
  •
Provisions of DOMA were recently struck down which gave same sex couples equal protection under federal laws. A recent development that's getting little attention is churches are changing their bylaws to protect themselves from lawsuits by the LGBT community. The bylaws are taking up where DOMA was struck down, declaring the church only recognizes marriages between a man and a woman.

Separation of Church and State: A First Amendment Primer - 0 views

  •
The right to freedom of religion is so central to American democracy that it was enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution along with other fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. In order to guarantee an atmosphere of absolute religious liberty, this country's founders also mandated the strict separation of church and state.

Freedom of Religion - 0 views

  •
Every now and then the Supreme Court will get a case based on religion. In these cases the court will have to decide whether or not the religion should be excepted or not. One case taken to the court that was said to be illegal was about a coach in New Jersey who prayed with his team before games. This left people angry over the fact that they believe religious displays should not be illegal. This issue has also brought up the question on whether freedom of speech is also being taken away when the Supreme Court rules against displays of religion.

Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran | Dove World Outreach Center - 0 views

  •
A group plans to burn Korans on 9/11 to show the dangers of Islam. This shows a lack of religous freedom in this country, as well as ignorance towards world religions. It's appalling to see this. If you don't want to practice Islam don't, but leave those who do alone.

Wow, that sounds horrible. I'm not sure I'll get the courage to watch this. Thanks for sharing!
