How the European Union (EU) decides to move forward with their online privacy laws in regard to personal information, will greatly impact how the U.S. proceeds with theirs. The "economic partnership" between the two nations are so heavily intertwined, that legislations across seas will impact U.S. companies. The EU has implemented legislations protecting the rights of online customers. Meanwhile, in the U.S., companies have been reluctant to work with the government in providing U.S. online customers the same protection, because the majority of their profits stem from online advertising. These advertisements work so well because companies have been able to track consumer activities and in turn cater to them according to their habits. Implement government regulations that prevent big companies from doing that and their profits will plummet.

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda. A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world. The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives

A 20-year-old woman stalked through the Internet and killed. Thousands of e-commerce customers watching as their credit card numbers are sold online for $1 apiece. Internet chat rooms where identities are bought, sold and traded like options on the Chicago Board of Trade.

For years people have tried to stop the hackers and now they are trying again. Will it work? Who knows.

I often think that individuals should have the freedom to self prescribe or have access to medication that doctors would prescribe without a prescription. This article from The Washington Post is an excellent reminder or why people should NOT have the freedom to buy dangerous drugs without doctor's consent. It gives examples of how online drug stores run their business using a middle man and a phone doctor to issue the medications. There is a story about one online pharmacy, run by an ex-felon, that went from filling 17 prescriptions in 6 months to over 1100 in a month. The author also mentions stories of indiviuals affected by this problem.

We either pay for privacy like with ITunes or deal with the information leaks. The problem most people have is that there was no way of knowing what exactly was being shared about you.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate companion, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). Shows a great video and talks alot about SOPA and PIPA laws. The video talks alot about several websites that disagree with these acts. Also, discusses who is for it and why it is important to have the privacy inplace.

This article tells of the new bill to stop bad language and any annoying harassment on the internet. Some argue using bad language is their right, others just prefer not to be harassed online with inapropriate language.

SOPA is bill designed to stop foreign websites that promote piracy. In doing so, websites would be prohibitted from showing advertisements to links with pirated content. This bill is still waiting to be voted on.

Can the U.S. continue without privacy laws in place for its citizens? It basically boils down to if the big industries "can agree on adequate policies that balance privacy and profits." The people are asking for basic privacy laws for the internet, but that would mean a tight leash on big company data collecting and everything else implied.

Psychologically it is said that we have many social scripts, in other words we do not act the same exact way around our parents as we do our boss or our friends. Companies that use social media are attempting to view how you live your life outside of work, how you act out that social script. But why should that matter? Regardless if you put pictures of Saturday night drinking it does not mean that this who you are in the office, they are two completely different script and for the general population they are unrelated.

I think employers should look at social media networks, people should always present themselves in a professional look, because there behaviors affect the company, on the clock or off

Technology is advancing faster and faster every minute and privacy is something known of the past now in my opinion. One of my teachers told the class that everything you learn about computers during your freshman and sophomore years of college will most likely be outdated by your junior year - just to help realize how fast technology is actually growing. Anything online can affect you now-a-days it seems. On the news the other day, there was a story about Facebook Friends and your credit. People are actually being denied car loans or things of that sort because of the friends they have on Facebook because if their friends seem unreliable and have bad scores, then the company will assume you do too. It's getting ridiculous to be honest.

These days employers monitor and know everything you are doing. Knowing this, I feel like if you are acting in a way that is respectable both at work and in your personal life, you will have nothing to worry about. I do not see this issue of lack of privacy changing, I see it increasing as time goes on.
