Here is an article that provides information about ENP certification. This was written in 2013, which is the same year that the ANCC approved ENP certification.

This is an article that discusses possible frameworks for phases of transition from student RN to becoming an FNP. With the limited research that has been done in the area it is difficult to know exactly how to support students in their transition to be a provider, but this is a foundation which can be built upon.

This article reviewed several different studies on interdisciplinary care and looked for ways that we can improve on health care and implement better teamwork. What I found most interesting is that the article talks about how educating staff on the benefits of teamwork is seriously lacking. Two issues are emerging in health care as clinicians face the complexities of current patient care: the need for specialized health professionals, and the need for these professionals to collaborate. Interdisciplinary health care teams with members from many professions answer the call by working together, collaborating and communicating closely to optimize patient care.

This article finds two emerging issues that must be addressed to optimize patient care: "the need for specialized health professionals, and the need for these professionals to collaborate." In nursing we talk a lot about "continuity of care" and that a seamless transition between PCPs, specialists, in-patient, and out-patient services is not only good-practice but vital for thorough health care delivery and improving long term outcomes.

The following is the abstract as stated by the author: "Purpose: To describe factors that ensure a smooth transition from nurse practitioner (NP) student to independent NP during the first year of practice. Data sources: Two contrasting case examples, the authors' experiences, and selected professional literature. Conclusions: Key points to consider upon searching or taking a first NP job include patient, colleague, and clinic factors. Patient factors include mix of patient presentations, complexity of patient presentations, insurance status, and population. Colleague factors include mentorship, charting, mix of providers, and availability of providers. Perhaps most importantly, clinic factors include productivity expectations, practice mission, charting systems, on-call requirements, supervision of other staff, and teaching status. Together, these factors can largely determine whether an NP's days are satisfying or frustrating in a new job. Implications for practice: The transition from NP student to independent NP can be daunting. Although nursing schools and practice sites have responsibilities to ensure the transition is smooth, the new NP is ultimately responsible for the transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]"

My intended area of practice is in HIV nursing. In my last post I provided a link to the competencies needed to be an advanced practice nurse in the field, and I talked a little bit about steps I'm taking to close that gap. To hopefully move me along the continuum from novice to expert. I thought this article was interesting and provided a broader approach in how nurses might use residency program for exactly that purpose. The article talks about DNPs but it is no different for the MSN prepared nurse. It seems that residencies may become more the norm in the future - and that might be good for all, new nurses and patients alike.

In this article, author Lugo discusses the findings of her study relating limits on full practice authority for APRNs to issues of gender equality. She investigated the link between state support of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and laws in these states allowing APRNs full scope of practice and prescribing rights. Her study showed that states that have historically and currently supported the ERA in fact allow greater APRN scope of practice, and thus she draws conclusions about attitudes towards women's equality and the regulation of advanced practice nursing, which remains to be a woman-dominated profession.

In this May 2016 article published in the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, Dr. Nancy Rudner Lugo argues that advanced practicing nursing viewed through a gendered perspective due to nursing's history as a predominantly female profession; because of this, APRNS in states that are less accepting of women's equality have a more narrow scope of practice. There is not currently a national-level evidence based method used to determine APRN scope, and is instead decided at the state level. The author seeks to explain the cause of the discrepancy between differing APRN scopes of practice in different states by comparing the APRN scope of practice between states that did and did not vote to pass the Equal Right Amendment, positing that states with cultural attitudes that are more equitable between genders reflect this at the legislative level, thus explaining the wider or full practice authority given to APRNs in these states. In conclusion, Lugo advocates for increasing the number of women in legislative positions, forming relationships between women's equality organizations and groups working towards expanded health care access, and emphasizing the skills and competency of APRNs in achieving positive patient health outcomes.

This is a toolkit from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners that APRNs can use to stay connected to legislative efforts that impact their profession. "Policy" can be a very overwhelming idea, particularly to someone who does not have experience with that realm of healthcare, so the AANP breaks it down for you. There are issue briefs on things like Full Practice Authority and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs. These briefs give you the bullet points on why the policy is good or bad for our patients and evidence supporting that position. There's other resources as well that can help you find your legislators, find out about federal and state legislation, and get connected to legislative advocacy initiatives in your state. Participating in the legislative process is a really important way that APRNs can advocate for our patients, and this resource will support you in engaging with it.

This 2016 article provides a brief overview of progress made in expanding APRN scope of practice to utilize a practitioner's education to the fullest extent. Although the removal of barriers to scope of practice is progressing, there is still much work ahead. This article recommends that to meet our goals, we must encourage other HCPs, policy makers, etc. that investing in our profession, i.e. becoming stakeholders, is a necessity to optimize health care practice.

Hello Everyone, Module 3 instruction asked us to explore articles about our transition from student to APRN. As we discussed in class and from guest panel, I realized that mentorship is really important. While I was looking through emory DiscoverE about mentorship, I came across this article that highlights how important it is to clarify the term "mentorship" when I am talking to my potential employer because it can mean different for the employer. The article really highlights how important it is to find a set definition for the term "mentorship". If the link does not work, I have the article downloaded, but I cannot seem to attach it here.

Very interesting read. This article provides evidence on why healthcare organizations should hire nurse practitioners based upon the education and training that they receive within their speciality as opposed to their previous RN experience. Many hospitals are struggling with this dilemma: Do we hire the APRN who has previous nursing experience in this area (who is not certified in this area) or do we hire the APRN who is certified to work in this area based on their formal training/education but is a new graduate? This article describes how prior nursing experience with a specific population does not qualify a nurse practitioner to practice without the population-focused education and certificate.

Even though it took a long time to achieve this, 40% of Georgia APRNs do not write prescriptions. This is a great systematic review that delves into state by state regulations on scope of practice for APRNs and how restrictive practice ultimately reduces access to healthcare particularly in rural populations.
