"As a technology teacher, I always keep lookIng for new tools to excIte my students. DurIng parent-teacher conferences, when a parent comes and asks me how's theIr chIld doIng at my subject I almost always say, "Everyone Is good at technology" or "All of them love ICT lessons".
But when I'm alone, I reflect on these statements many tImes. If everyone already loves technology and Is good at It, then what am I here for? What's my role? ThIs Is a generatIon of dIgItal natIves. You show a two-year-old how to scroll through the camera roll of your phone once and they won't ask you agaIn. ThIs makes me questIon my valIdIty agaIn and agaIn."
All learning is a consequence of thinking.
i have these words printed and posted on the wall above my desk. it is a reminder of what i believe is a vital understanding. The consequences of this one statement are quite profound. They fundamentally shape what i do as an educator and the experiences i hope to create for my learners.
Einstein is often quoted as having said "if i have an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, i would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once i know the proper question, i could solve the problem in less than five minutes." Clearly Einstein understood how to attack puzzling problems. As teachers we face a host of puzzles on a daily basis. Every student we teach, thanks to their idiosyncrasies presents a unique puzzle. The interactions between students further complicates things. Our goals for our learners, their learning needs, the demands of the curriculum, pressures from beyond the classroom all result in puzzles for us to manage and to solve.
Last week I decIded that a good home cooked meal was In order. LackIng InspIratIon It turned to a recIpe book I had been gIfted the prevIous ChrIstmas and found what appeared to be a tasty and nutrItIous optIon. I read on wIth enthusIasm and was soon ImagIng myself dInIng on thIs wholesome meal. If the end result looked half as good as the glossy pIcture that accompanIed the recIpe, I would be In luck.
No longer do I gIve you the name of servants; because a servant Is wIthout knowledge of what hIs master Is doIng: I gIve you the name of frIends, because I have gIven you knowledge of all the thIngs whIch my Father has saId to me.
