Are wired kids well served by schools? | Tech news blog - CNET News.com - 0 views

  • PALO ALTO, Calif.--Among the generation of kids growing up wired, many teens are hyper-motivated to learn a special skill like how to create a podcast, direct a YouTube video, publish an anime site, or hack an iPhone. Now if only teachers could inspire such ingenuity.

They don't mention it here, but collaboration can be added also, meaningful collaboration, not what you typically see in the classroom.

News: The Obama Plan - Inside Higher Ed - 0 views

  • Experts on distance education at community colleges said that the president's proposals on creating free online courses could be historic and transformative.
  • "And this will make it possible for a professor to complement his lecture with an online exercise, or for a student who can't be away from her family to still keep up with her coursework. We don't know where this kind of experiment will lead, but that's exactly why we ought to try it because I think there's a possibility that online education can provide especially for people who are already in the workforce and want to retrain the chance to upgrade their skills without having to quit their job."
  • He said that the college has expanded courses offered online, and in the early morning, or nights or weekends, but that "the bottom line is that we have to build capacity."

  • Of late, educators and foundations have been focusing more on graduation rates, with the City University of New York starting programs and planning a new model of community college to focus on getting students degrees, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Lumina Foundation for Education spending big on efforts to improve remedial education and graduation rates.
  • Advocates for online learning also viewed Obama's plans as significant. Fred Lokken, associate dean of Truckee Meadows Community College for its WebCollege, said this was "the very first comprehensive effort by the federal government that recognizes the importance of online learning."
  • Catherine M. Casserly, who studies technology issues at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, said she saw the program leading to "a dual approach," in which students could view the new material or community colleges would get well-prepared material around which local instructors could plan instruction
  • "It's very hard to supplement something if the base is being undermined," he said. "We can't look at this as a panacea."
  • Indeed, late Tuesday, that's exactly what Democrats in the House proposed doing, when they announced plans to move ahead soon on Obama's student loan restructuring proposal, which paves the way for paying for the community college plan.
  •
$500 million would be awarded to create online instructional materials that would be available free to community colleges and their students. \n\n"And this will make it possible for a professor to complement his lecture with an online exercise, or for a student who can't be away from her family to still keep up with her coursework. LETSI Blog - Who Needs Teachers? - 1 views

  • Who Needs Teachers? The elearning zeitgeist is that teaching is passé: Google opens the door to all the world’s knowledge. The “sweet-spot” in corporate training, we are told, is rapid conversion of PowerPoints and SME-created podcasts. E-textbook and enterprise software publishers insist that what students need is better access to digital resources.

  • In support of research examining relationships between learner characteristics and the quality of online discussions, this paper surveys different methods for evaluating discussions. The paper will present coding methods used in our own research as well as methods used by others interested in quality online discussions. Key topics include what constitutes quality in online discussions and how that quality can be measured?

What a wonderful article! I teach a course for faculty in how to teach online (in which they participate as students), and the author touches on many of the best practices that we model and address in the course. :-)
  • I couldn't have been more surprised by the satisfaction and joy that could come from a distance-learning program.

Open for Learning: The CMS and the Open Learning Network | in education - 2 views

  • technology has failed to transform learning
    • Lisa M Lane

Technology does not transform learning -- people developing and using technology to transform learning does that. Does one blame the technology, its design, or the uses to which it's been put?
  • these disruptions are likely to come from educational technologists and leaders exploring new tools and new approaches to learning.
    • Lisa M Lane

or, what would be even better from a pedagogical perspective, change could come from innovative faculty, as they use new tools to achieve their teaching goals
  • should also be taken as critiques of the predominant pedagogical model in higher education
    • Lisa M Lane

It is, I think, primarily a critique of the pedagogical model.

  • Because there is some confidential and proprietary data in the CMS, we have traditionally locked all course data behind a login screen, viewable only by an instructor and the officially enrolled members of his or her class

An excellent point! This can be solved with selective use of CMS elements, and entering as little as possible into the LMS. Linking out is significant as a practice and a philosophy. I try to teach faculty to do that regardless of which CMS they are using.
  • the vast majority of instructors who adopted the CMS largely ignored Bloom's challenge to make an "educational contribution of the greatest magnitude," instead focusing on increasing the administrative efficiency of their jobs
