Science applications (Apps) for iPod Touch offer students and teachers excellent tools to help students spend more time learning science content in class and laboratory situations. Although many Science Apps are loaded with ads and other distracting information, I have found several that are free of ads.

A great citizen science site where users can upload and view photos of animals or use the free Apple device and Android Apps. It's a great way to do real science with what you already have in class. Check out the education section for more ideas. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Science

Science and maths revision apps

This is a very cool app. You look at the periodic table and drag elements to mix them together and see what happens in the app. The GoReact app is a "drag and drop" laboratory. If you introduce the periodic table, you'll want to see this.

I'm not sure how the licensing is working for them. I didn't think you could have one app and share on 40 ipods, but that is what the Charleston County School District says they are doing. From the article: ""Everything from vocabulary, to e-book reading, to art, to science," said CCSD Media Services Coordinator Connie Dopierala. CCSD hopes to invest in a set of 40 iPod Touches for every school in the district, at $150 each. Students can learn math or grammar on inexpensive application programs. "We can download a 99-cent app and load it on all 40 iPod Touches or however many, and that's very cost-effective with taxpayer dollars," said Dopierala."

This is a 'must try' iPad app where you can design a 3D creature. Tap, drag and pinch your creation until it is just right and then 'paint' it with the patterns you want. It's a great resource to use alongside creative writing or science work. If you have access to a 3D printer you can even fabricate your design. This is an iPad app and site where you can create video tutorials on a virtual whiteboard on an iPad and share it on the web to view on any device. The site has a extensive bank of shared tutorials from other educators on a range of topics, including maths, science, English, languages and more. This is a fun Android and Apple app from University College London were players complete a range of games to exercise the brain cells and provide researchers with real, but anonymous data to use in their study. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Science

A great Android app which shows you the many readouts of the sensors on your device. Use them in science, geography and more.

I bookmarked this, in spite of the column title, because I know that many of us from time to time will refer to the many things you can do with the iPhone in your pocket. Carrying around that kind of power in your pocket SHOULD change SOMETHING about how we view the role of education today, don't we agree? Add to this list the ability to control Radio Controlled cars and helocopters, play music, and so MANY more of OUR favorite apps and... the technology is just too important to ignore. Or worse - to ban! This is just a nice collection of apps and descriptions in ten categories, from arts, to science, to math, to litereature, and more. Yes, it omits as many categories (or more) than it includes, but it's a nice place to start.
