Kyle Dunbar is running a virtual book club. The first book is Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds. In 2011 70% of the workforce between 22-34 used tablets and globally 46% of the mobile workforce has a smartphone. Using, managing, and maximizing these tools is an important part of modern life. Perhaps today's issues are helping students learn to focus, but keeping them out of school is shortsighted decision that will be looked back upon as a lack of vision... that is if you can help kids focus and help teachers encourage the use of them effectively. This website offers a free global chat on blogs and is creating quite a stir. While it may not be appropriate for all sites - if you put it on a password protected site of some kind (where you know those viewing the page have permission to view - like a wikispaces) - then you could engage in conversation with all kinds of audiences including parents, etc. around topics of interest. Students could host their own live chats. Interesting possibilities here.

Chinese New Year Collection with many different lessons at all age levels along with downloadables to use. If you are expecting your students to have global literacy, you cannot afford to ignore China. This is a fun time to teach about it - kids love dragons and fireworks!

A website that is for teams and is free for up to 30 members in a workspace. We are looking for work flow software for Flat Classroom so this is a neat one to try out. Lifehacker mentioned it as an underhyped app of 2011 because they think it is so great. It is definitely something for those who are interested in global collaboration to test out.

Volkskwagen agrees to turn of blackberries after hours as part of a union agreement. While I don't know a lot of teachers connected via blackberries,I do personally know the complexities of global collaboration in schools. We must learn to balance work and home and know when to disconnect but then again, a work environment can become so fast paced that everyone seems to expect the others that they should work 24/7. Yet another reason to advocate checking email 2-3 times a day - let everyone know when you will be available and stick to the schedule.

If you want to help tomorrow be better than today, put financial literacy into your school's program. In fact, I would venture to say that your community will reap the benefits in the years to come as students learn how to manage their money and balance their checkbook. I teach accounting and wish that every student knew how to balance a checkbook. They also need to know the difference between secured and unsecured debt. Spend less than you make, period. "You may not realize it, but these three events are part-and an excellent illustration-of the global financial literacy crisis, one of the overriding problems of the modern financial world."
