The Internet Presidency? - 0 views

Based on the integral role technology played in President-elect Barack Obama's campaign, as well as recent announcements that he will be creating a chief technology officer in the federal government for the first time, ed-tech experts suggest that the new administration could revolutionize the way technology is viewed in the United States, and, it is hoped, in education. President-elect Obama is doing for the Internet what John F. Kennedy did for television, says Hirsch, by making it a common and essential staple of American life.

Inauguration Scrapbook - 0 views

  •
This is, I think, another perfect example of what Clay Shirky would point to in his book, "Here Comes Everybody." Folks just decided to 'get together' to build a place where people could share their images of that day. It then does something that no newspaper or magazine could afford to do - it paints a vivid picture of the day through the lenses of MANY people, thus providing so many different views and perspectives of the HIstoric day.

"Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. Let's set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed. Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability. Let's make college more affordable, and let's invest in scientific research, and let's lay down broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across America."

"7:21 7:26 And so the bottom line is if you think the last 8 years haven't worked, 7:26 7:32 if you think that the government can do a better job creating jobs, building the economy, 7:32 7:36 making sure that kids can go to college, providing health care to people who don't have it, 7:37 7:44 then it's hard to figure why you would want 4 more years of exactly the same policies. Weblogg-ed » The Obama Speech - 0 views

  • I have read the President’s speech and I agree with his comments. I am a conservative republican and I did not find any problem with what the President will say in his speech to the students. There is no brainwashing or indoctrination in his comments. We have problems in our schools and that needs to change.

'We're Going to the Moon:' Part 2 | innovation3 - 0 views

  •
This morning President Obama gave what I would call his 'We're-Going-to-the-Moon' speech at the 146th Annual Meeting of National Academy of the Sciences. Earlier today I wrote a post, Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity for Our Children, on a comment by Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan about the need to challenge the educational status quo. After listening to President Obama's speech, I realized it was a Part 2 to my earlier post so I retitled the post 'We're-Going-to-the-Moon:' Part 1 and titled this post Part 2. Please listen to the entire speech and read the full text, but here I quote the President's comments on STEM education.

A $100 Billion Question: How Best to Fix the Nation's Schools? - Class Struggle - Jay M... - 0 views

  •
If you had $100 billion to fix our schools, what would you do? A surprisingly smart list of suggestions for the education portion of the federal stimulus money is circulating in the education policy world. A group of experts claims authorship. I don't believe committees are capable of good ideas, so I doubt the alleged origins of the list. But let's put that aside for a moment and see what they've got. Better yet, why not come up with our own ideas? My column seeking cheap ways to improve education yielded interesting results. By contrast, think of what we could do if we had enough money to buy the contract of every great quarterback: guarantee the Redskins a Super Bowl victory. Many expensive school-fixing schemes proved just as insane and just as useless. But Barack Obama is president, and we are supposed to be hopeful.

Wikinomics» Blog Archive » Obama should look to Portugal on how to fix schools - 0 views

  • First, it allows teachers to step off the stage and start listening and conversing instead of just lecturing. Second, the teacher can encourage students to discover for themselves, and learn a process of discovery and critical thinking instead of just memorizing the teacher’s information. Third, the teacher can encourage students to collaborate among themselves and with others outside the school. Finally, the teacher can tailor the style of education to their students’ individual learning styles.

Great teaching. Technology is just a tool. This is the model that suits students needs, technology or not.
