Saving the Sports Complex Algebra Project - 1 views

  •
An algebra project focusing on a theme which interests students is more likely to engage them in the project, so lets take a look at sports. Many students participate in sports at some level, whether as part of a school team or a community team. For the most part these same students do not understand the costs involved to host the sport. Also, they do not understand how much money is needed to ensure a profitable season so the sport can continue from year to year.

This New York Times article describes the business idea of three Harvard alums who have partnered together to offer a different type of loan services, Unithrive, to current Harvard students. Just launched a few months ago, Unithrive aims to link Harvard alumni whith current students who need extra help in paying for school or other outside activities such as test preparation for the GRE or MCAT as well as funding for abroad travel. The article further describes this business venture which offers interest-free loans up to $2,000 for currently enrolled students. The main goal of this program is to link alumni with students and serve as another way alumni can keep involved with the school and get to know students on a more personal level.

When I came across this article in the paper it made me think of current discussion we had about "Public Schools for Private Advantage". We had mentioned what may happen if academic programs began to focus more on what skills will be needed to get a job rather than programs that may not provide as much monetary gains.
