For a web-based learning to be truly effective it must be interactive. This means that it is not just a reformatted canned lesson of printed worksheets placed on the web. The web-based activity is inquiry-based and incorporates the full features available on the web - interactivity between computer and student. The learning activity must engage student critical thinking skills by using the scientific inquiry process.

New York City Students Show Math Gains - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
NYC public school students showed increases in their math scores this year. Some say they show great increases and are reasons that the school should stay in the control of the mayor. Others argue that the improved scores are misleading - educators are getting used to the testing and know what to expect and they are thinking of raising the scores.

Dallas' troubled Spruce high school saved by students' TAKS scores | News for Dallas, T... - 0 views

I found this article extremely interesting. 1. I think it is great that the school was able to rebound itself from being a low performer to fitting in with the rest of the schools in the ISD after many years below the norm. 2. The approach the principal and school district took to achieve there goals was something i'd never seen before. They took out the 10th and 11th grades to focus on those students who wanted to learn and were willing to graduate. I'm not sure how I feel about the principal/district sorting students by those willing and those not, how are they to make that decision? Incredibly interesting article about the use of technology and how it can positively and negatively effect learning. As stated in our discussions earlier this week, the use of technology can - at times - undermine the real classroom experience. In the case of sites which are explained in this article, I think it highlights the need and importance of 'real' classroom learning to help with questions and curb cheating.

The National Parks Service's Teaching with Historica Places uses places listed on the National Register of Historic Places to enhance traditional teaching of history, social studies, geography, etc. There are over 135 classroom lesson plans. I find this to be very interesting because I would like to incorporate more examples of material culture in the classroom. I think lessons like this provide a valuable lens through which to study historic moments.

Recent neurological and psychological research (using scientific methodolgy as a basis, not theories e.g. Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, Bloom's Taxonomy, etc) is indicating that the constructivist models of learning, where 'process' is valued far more than 'content', are incorrect. Knowledge and thinking are interdependent and to think well, students must have knowledge.
