"Last year I went to West Kalimantan in Borneo to see for myself the effects of the runaway growth of the palm oil industry. I came home firm in the belief that Iceland would not continue using palm oil until companies delivered on their zero deforestation commitments. This is because palm oil has had devastating consequences for local communities, who are being displaced, and on endangered species like the orangutan (our closest relative in the wild), which are being driven close to extinction. Palm oil has many benefits, chiefly that its yields are better than the alternatives. But it is grown almost exclusively in areas of tropical rainforest, which are the 'crown jewels' of our planet's biodiversity. With 146 football pitches of rainforest being lost every hour in Indonesia alone, the urgency of the crisis cannot be overstated. And global demand is set to double by 2050. At Iceland the 1,000 tonnes of palm oil we used annually pale into insignificance compared to many of our competitors. As such a tiny player we took the decision that the only way we could create meaningful change was to shout very loudly from outside the established palm oil industry. So we decided simply to stop using palm oil until the industry cleaned up its act. It was our own decision to give consumers a choice where previously there was none. We never called for a wider industry ban, and accept entirely that a wholesale boycott of palm oil is not the right long term solution. ..."

"The Minute Paper comes in many variations, but the simplest one involves wrapping up the formal class period a few minutes early and posing two questions to your students: What was the most important thing you learned today? What question still remains in your mind? Taken together, those two questions accomplish multiple objectives. The first one not only requires students to remember something from class and articulate it in their own words (more about that in a moment), but it also requires them to do some quick thinking. They have to reflect on the material and make a judgment about the main point of that day's class. The second question encourages them to probe their own minds and consider what they haven't truly understood. Most of us are infected by what learning theorists sometimes call "illusions of fluency," which means that we believe we have obtained mastery over something when we truly have not. To answer the second question, students have to decide where confusion or weaknesses remain in their own comprehension of the day's material. Closing connections. If we want students to obtain mastery and expertise in our subjects, they need to be capable of making their own connections between what they are learning and the world around them - current events, campus debates, personal experiences. The last five minutes of class represent an ideal opportunity for students to use the course material from that day and brainstorm some new connections.The metacognitive five. We have increasing evidence from the learning sciences that students engage in poor study strategies. Likewise, research shows that most people are plagued by the illusions of fluency. "9 Consejos para resolver conflictos con personas enojadas mediante la compatía. Cuando tengas delante tuyo a una persona muy molesta o enfadada contigo puedes llevar a cabo estos sencillos pasos que promueven la compatía hacia el otro: 1. Empieza preguntando a la persona enojada qué les molesta. Fíjate que, si le preguntas a la persona enojada qué le molesta, lo que estás haciendo es generar opciones en lugar de pedirle que se calme. 2. Escucha atentamente lo que te dice la persona enojada. Es muy importante que en el momento en el que la persona te cuenta lo que le pasa, escuches atentamente a dicha persona. Deja de hacer lo que estabas haciendo, mírale a la cara y mientras te está hablando asiente con la cabeza en señal de demostración de que lo que te está contando te importa. 3. Clarifica la respuesta de la persona enojada con una o dos preguntas. Una vez te haya contado el porqué de su enojo contigo es muy importante que formules a la persona enojada una o dos preguntas que ayuden a aclarar al máximo lo que te ha contado. Es importante que esas preguntas sean lo más concisas posible, y no olvides que deben ser preguntas abiertas para generar más opciones a la persona enojada. 4. Repite lo más fielmente posible lo que te diga la persona ofendida. Es muy importante que la persona ofendida hable y luego escuche por boca tuya aquello que te ha contado. A la persona enojada le ayuda muchísimo escucharse a sí misma por boca de otra persona, porque la percepción de lo que dices y lo que escuchas sobre lo que dices puede ayudar a clarificar y ordenar el pensamiento de la persona. 5. Concede mucho valor al sentimiento que tiene contigo la persona enojada. Es muy importante que expreses comprensión por lo que te ha contado. Pero, cuidado. En este momento no debes ser simpático, sino empático. Esta diferencia en este momento del conflicto determinará muy probablemente su resolución. "El método Flipped Classroom o Clase Invertida ( ya lo sé, la traducción se las trae) se ha puesto de moda. No paro de ver artículos contándonos sus bondades y uno piensa. ¿Cómo no se nos había ocurrido antes? Al fin y al cabo se trata de que los alumnos aprendan en su casa mediante vídeos y luego ir a la escuela a trabajar y practicar lo aprendido. La verdad es que lo de aprender mediante vídeos se lleva intentando durante varias décadas. Todos los años nos aventuramos a aprender algo nuevo por estas fechas con fascículos acompañados de su CD (los más viejos recordamos los VHS). Intentar enseñar mediante un vídeo no es nuevo, lo que es realmente nuevo es la capacidad que tiene cualquier profesor de hacer sus propios vídeos/lección y difundirlos en la red para sus alumnos. La duda que me asalta con este "nuevo método" es si será justo con TODOS los alumnos. Alumnos sin recursos Todos los inicios de curso nos encontramos con alumnos que no pueden colaborar con el resto de la clase con una simple caja de colores. Con este método, estamos pidiendo a las familias que dispongan de un ordenador y conexión a internet en su casa. Si no podemos proveer estos recursos desde la escuela, el nuevo método de aprendizaje es injusto. Alumnos sin apoyo en su hogar En pleno debate sobre si hay muchos o pocos deberes para nuestros alumnos, con el método Flipped Classroom estamos haciendo que los "deberes" sean la parte más importante del aprendizaje. El aula pasaría a ser una especie de taller donde practicar lo aprendido, compartirlo con los compañeros, etc. Todos los que nos dedicamos a la docencia conocemos a alumnos que no reciben ningún tipo de apoyo en casa. Algunos hemos optado por reducir la cantidad de tarea que se envía a casa por esta razón. Con el método Flipped Classroom, el grado de independencia que estamos pidiendo a nuestros alumnos hace que las diferencias entre alumnos con apoyo en casa y aquellos que no lo tienen
