Discover What is Pangea Day and how film unites people to build a better future - 0 views

  •
The Pangea Day Mission & Purpose Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film. Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that - to help people see themselves in others - through the power of film. The Pangea Day Event Starting at 18:00 GMT on May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire program will be broadcast - in seven languages - to millions of people worldwide through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

Auto Detailing, more than just a Wash! - U'GoPros Blogs Car Detailing - 0 views

  •
Detailing is generally divided into two categories: exterior detailing and interior detailing. Some also consider the engine bay to be a third and separate area. However, unless you are taking your vehicle to a car show, you probably don't need more than a basic cleaning of oil and sludge in this area. Let's consider the different types of exterior and interior detailing below.

The World Digital Library (WDL) makes available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the world. The principal objectives of the WDL are to: * Promote international and intercultural understanding; * Expand the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet; * Provide resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences; * Build capacity in partner institutions to narrow the digital divide within and between countries.

UK Children Go Online | The Communication Initiative Network - 1 views

  • Hence, a new divide is opening up, one centred on the quality of use. The UKCGO survey finds that middle class children, children with internet access at home, children with broadband access and children whose parents use the internet more often are more likely to be daily users and so to experience the internet as a rich, if risky, medium than are less privileged children.

Those not falling into this category will lose on the benefits of high-speed, regular internet use.
  • Summary This nationwide survey of 1,500 children aged 9-19 and their parents is part of a research project carried out by UK Children Go Online (UKCGO). Between January and March 2004, researchers conducted in-home, face-to-face interviews, lasting some 40 minutes, of 1,511 children and 906 parents across the United Kingdom.

2004 is severely out of date in this field. The figures today are going to be much higher.
  • Currently, 74% have internet access via a computer, games console or digital television
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • School access is near universal: 92% have accessed the internet at school
  • 88% of middle class but only 61% of working class children have accessed the internet at home;

2004 research on UK internet access for children. Presumably the figures have increased since then.

Life on the Screen: Visual Literacy in Education | Edutopia - 26 views

  • When people talk to me about the digital divide, I think of it not being so much about who has access to what technology as who knows how to create and express themselves in this new language of the screen. If students aren't taught the language of sound and images, shouldn't they be considered as illiterate as if they left college without being able to read or write?
  • But there are rules for telling a story visually that are just as important as grammatical rules or math terms, and you can test people on them as well. There is grammar in film, there is grammar in graphics, there is grammar in music, just like there are rules in math that can be taught. For instance, what emotion does the color red convey? What about blue? What does a straight line mean? How about a diagonal line?
  • If you're going to put together a multimedia project, you need to know that you can't have a fast rhythm track if you're talking about death. It just doesn't work. You're not communicating well.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • All these forms of communication are extremely important, and they should be treated that way. Unfortunately, we've moved away from teaching the emotional forms of communication. But if you want to get along in this world, you need to have a heightened sense of emotional intelligence, which is the equal of your intellectual intelligence.
  • You're already seeing it. You often see very educated people -- doctors and lawyers and engineers -- trying to make presentations, and they have no clue about how to communicate visually and what happens when you put one image after another. So their lectures become very confused because, from a visual perspective, they're putting their periods at the front of their sentences, and nobody understands them.
  • The education world, it seems, thrives on stability and limiting change. There seem to be an awful lot of people protecting the status quo.
