Online learning: pedagogy, technology and opening up higher education | Higher Educatio... - 0 views

Higher education has always been fond of its acronyms and they don't get much more prolific than the current four letters doing the rounds. From the December 2011 launch of MITx Stateside to the University of Edinburgh's decision to join the Coursera platform, MOOCs (or Massive Open Online Courses) have barely been off the education news menu. Nor was the Observer alone in recently asking: "Do online courses spell the end for the traditional university?"

Often referred to as "blended classrooms," it's a movement that has been gaining hold in many districts around the country. It's also a system whose effectiveness in improving student achievement is just starting to be measured by researchers, although Lawrence officials say the early results are promising.

I'm done trying to make a graduate program work for me.4 I'm tired of hearing teachers tell me they didn't learn things they needed to know in college. I'm tired of being the customer, and being treated like a recipient at a local food bank. Seriously, if you walked into Wal-mart, and they gave you a pre-loaded shopping bag that you had no choice in selecting, would you go back there?

  • In collaboration with several content area organizations, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills developed a series of ICT Literacy Maps illustrating the intersection between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy and core academic subjects including English, mathematics, science and social studies (civics/government, geography, economics, history). The maps enable educators to gain concrete examples of how ICT Literacy can be integrated into core subjects, while making the teaching and learning of core subjects more relevant to the demands of the 21st century.

How Should We Measure Student Learning? | Edutopia - 0 views

  • Assessment is at the heart of education: Teachers and parents use test scores to gauge a student's academic strengths and weaknesses, communities rely on these scores to judge the quality of their educational system, and state and federal lawmakers use these same metrics to determine whether public schools are up to scratch.

21st Century Learning: Letter to my Colleagues - 0 views

I am often asked as I travel to various places to present why I would spend so much time talking about technology knowing that with outsourcing and such that I am undermining job security in that computers could replace teachers. To that I respond, If you can be replaced by a computer then you probably should be! The truth is that technology will never replace teachers, however teachers who know how to use technology effectively to help their students connect and collaborate together online will replace those who do not.

21st Century Learning: 9 Principles for Implementation: The Big Shift - 1 views

  • Some would argue that the tension and irritation between "why" and "how" is by design. That these shifts are creating a permissive framework in education where there are no clear answers (Turner, 2004). And that in a changing educational environment the needed changes in education should be negotiated from a why approach rather than a how approach.
  • It is no longer about information management and prescriptive outcomes, but rather about building capacity- in ourselves, our faculty, our staff and in our students and then being able to contextualize the collective wisdom we gain through those relationships to making the world a better place.

It is about building capacity! That is where leadership on all levels is needed! It needs to happen across districts, in schools, and even 'one teacher at a time'!
