Personal learning networks span from professionals to just your average person. Anyone seeking a specific interest or learning of will find some type of PLN that fits their need. PLN's are not just for educators and students.

PLNs help to ensure lifelong learners while, engaging in new skills, and information. This all takes place while remaining connected to new information and people of interest to the user. PLNs can be professional, personal or a combination of both.

This article talks about how PLN have been around forever but with the advent of wireless access it has changed how we interact with our PLN.

This article expresses the idea that our professional and personal learning and networks take place in many places and not just the classroom, though that is a part of it. However, learning can be just as valid if you meet in the local coffee shop or head out for lunch together. It encourages us to expand our ideas of what professional development really is. It's not just the conference or event we go to. It's on-going.

Much has been written recently about the impact of social networking tools in teaching and learning and how educators can build on the skills of their students in using these tools. But if educators only integrate the ability of students to connect and socialize, deeper points of learning will be missed.

This pages provides ten links that are basically guides for creating effective PLNs. I was going to post them individually, but thought it was more effective to post them here together. As I browsed them - I saw some pretty cool ideas.

I truly enjoyed reading this page. The guides were short but very helpful. The comment about being a beacon of light was spot on. How often do people take, giving nothing back in return. The whole foundation of a personal learning network is to give and receive. Being an active member also means to help out those who are new to the community. There have been many times when I have struggled with a new concept or application and I know someone in one of my classes knew how to help but chose not to. This is a huge strength of a PLN, helping one another and sharing information. I think introducing elementary students to the concept of a PLN would be useful not only now but in their futures. Learning how to network is a 21st century skill that everyone must know how to engage in.

The line between those creating the educational content and those consuming the content has been blurred through the development of technology and various networks. Students are creating content for each other to learn from, working with teachers, etc. (Think all of the EdTech classes here at Boise). I have not had the opportunity to attend an EduCamp, but the more I become involved in social media surrounding the world of educational technology, I see these mini-conferences occurring more and more. This article focuses on the purpose behind EduCamps, how they work and the drive behind them. These experiences can result in or happen because of a community of practice. I can see the potential for continuing the life-long learning journey why bolstering ones own PLN. These (Educamps) intrigue me, have any of you participated in these before?

We hear much about the failure of MOOCs because of extraordinarily low completion rates, but what we do not hear about is whether those MOOCs are connectivist or instructionist. This article talks about the successful aspects of connectivist MOOCs, which may include promoting the development of lasting communities of practice and personal learning networks.

I love this book! It was written as an experiment in online participatory, collaborative scholarship. It looks at how learning institutions can become as flexible and collaborative as social networking sites. Personal learning networks are highlighted in several examples. The leads on the project are Cathy Davidson (see earlier bookmark) and David Theo Goldberg.

This article actually stretches into the idea of Asynchronous Learning Networks. It is probably a little out of the scope of this assignment but the article focused on the social needs and elements of Asynchronous learning so I thought it was interesting and relevant.

This is quite old, however, as I read through the document I felt that the information was still relevant. You may read through it to see if you agree. While the tools and access have become much more advanced since 1998, the needs of participants in an asynchronous network have not changed. Let me know if you agree. This article states that a personal learning network is a major component within digital learning. After that, the writer explains that simply "surfing the web" is not an example of a PLN, but monitoring a specific set of resources is. It then goes on to discuss how personal learning networks can help teachers use class time more effectively while giving students access to materials through the use of the internet. The article explains this with the use of a blog for a class.
