    This graduate dissertation was particularly interesting to me since it focuses on K-12 Spanish teachers. The author discusses how communities of practice can be used as professional development and ongoing language training, particularly for non-native speakers. The research includes the use of technology in that the community of practice studied was conducted online.

    I can see the use of CoP being very beneficial for non-native speakers. The technologies are the tools that would help to bridge the learning gaps and support learners. non-native speakers often feel very isolated in learning environments, as having more than one learning group would be helpful. What a great dissertation topic.

    This article explores three different types of learning theories as applied to distance education or learning, a non-traiditonal means of learning where students are not physically present in the classroom for instruction. While the paper discusses the cognitive-behaviourist and social constructivist theories in this learning model, it also highlights the connectivism approach. It is made known in the text that the connectivism theory caters to the constant evolvement of the act of learning as it functions on the premise of building understanding by making meaningful connections between networks of information. It is to be appreciated that this text points out the strengths and weaknesses of the theory. When applied, this theory can be a struggle for students as the theory is extremely individualized and relies on the student to act as the "central connector" in their own learning, often leaving students weary from the energy exerted and sometimes confused by a lack of structured guidance and the responsibility to take control of their own learning.

    I am not sure I agree with the author of this piece. I appreciated the articulation of Connectivism, and the exposition of Siemens and Downes' ideas about Connectivism was clear...I just remain unconvinced--at this point--that Connectivism is a learning theory on the same par with Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism. In particular, I believe that learning is a human activity, and so when Siemens makes the claim, "Learning may reside in non-human appliances," I have a hard time accepting the theory. I agree that *information* can reside in non-human appliances...

    I found this article very intriguing. I have to admit that Dave's comment is what made me take a look. I actually like that the author points out that learning can take place outside of ourselves. However, I feel that by learning, in this context, he may be referring to more of an adaptation behavior than actual understanding.

    With the advancement in technology comes the "re evaluation" of traditional learning theories. We can no longer sit back and rely on the traditional classroom to fulfill the learning needs of the diverse students in our rooms.     This article by Wenger and Snyder in the Harvard Business Review is a great reflection of a community of practice (CoP) by the creators themselves in a well-known publication. While the article is in-depth and covers every aspect of a CoP, the included chart may have been the most helpful part of this article to really break down a CoP and the difference between that and other groups.

    This article was very informative. Two things that stood out the most for me were: one - the table outlining the engagement, life of network, etc. of Cops, formal work groups, project teams, and informal networks, and two - when Wenger and Snyder said, "Communities of practice are emerging in companies that thrive on knowledge." I totally agree with this statement. Knowledge is power and power puts you on top, so it stands to reason that Cops thrive on knowledge gained. Great source.

    This article from the Harvard Business Review provides a great overview for Communities of Practice and what they look like within the context of larger organizations. There is a great chart comparing CoP with other organizational groups and a good description of the hallmarks of effective CoPs.

    If you think Communities of Practice or CoPs are just for education, you need to read this article. It gives great examples of non-education based CoPs, including CoPs used in the current business world. In fact, the history of CoPs is traced as far back as ancient Greece in this article. Since this article tends to focus on non-education CoPs, it gives a nice breakdown of how "teams" differ from CoPs. This concept can easily apply to the school setting since many grade levels use team/department approaches for working with students. Looking at the business examples, it's worth noting that CoPs do not just spontaneously start. They take great effort to form and develop.

    Wenger and Snyder examine communities of practice and their implementation in the business and private sectors not necessarily education centric. They provide case studies on the benefits of CoP's which show concrete production improvement demonstrating the CoPs effectiveness. The chart comparing CoP's to teams and informal networks is helpful to understanding the differences.

    This article discusses communities of practice in a historical sense and provided me with some relevant background information. It also describes the several reasons that communities of practice are formed. Communities of practice, among other things, can be great for "maintaining connections with peers" or can be created for individuals to come together "in response to changes" surrounding them. I recommend this read.

    While parts of this article were about ways to create and grow CoPs, I found much of this helpful when illustrating CoPs in real workplaces that formed to solve problems by sharing expertise, commonalities, and without disrupting upper-level management.

    This article from Harvard Business Review explores CoPs which were fairly new to the business scene in 2000. Knowledge sharing, learning, and change were thought to be improved through CoPs, though the creation of CoPs is not a directive from management. CoPs are self created and have their own projects and leadership. The article shares a brief history of CoPs. Noted are the differences between informal networks, project teams, formal work groups, and CoPs - looking at their purpose, membership, bonds, and length of relationships. CoPs are recognized for improving company performance.

    What a great article that shows merit for connectivism in the new tech age. The comment about students not seeing the importance in passive activities is becoming prevelant in my own classroom. Taking into account the changes that are occuring with technology and internet, as well as the use of communities of practice can help educators best reach students using connectivism theories and approaches.

This is a great statement to show that connectivist theory centers on the interaction of people. In addition, it explains how the new theory works with personal networks and communities of practice. The digital age is transforming the way people approach learning.

    The phrase "know where" in relation to connectivism is a great way to describe it. I have found that the most important aspect of my job is to know where to find the answer, the people that understand that concept are the most successful.

    Retirees maintain personal interests---just as commonly as non-retirees. The love of learning and being a part of community does not disappear once one has retired. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people 65 and older spend at least 2 hours per day undertaking leisure activities. This article explores the idea of shifting from professional communities of interest to personal communities of interest in retirement and discusses PLNs in retirement that usually consist of friends and family members. The author focuses on the usage of social media for retirees to keep connected with one another.

CoP Development for Geography Teachers - 1 views

    This study shows a very specific CoP example, using geography teachers in New Zealand as the subject of research. In the introduction, the researcher states "mandating professional development services to several hired geography teachers is impractical...and needs to be voluntary rather than mandatory." This statement is consistent with CoPs having membership of like-individuals connecting because of their learning needs and wants. Furthermore, the study shows a positive result when connecting 'distant' people as a cost effective way to circumvent budgetary restraints for professional development.

    Communities of Practice need to be voluntary and non-threatening in order for an individual to join. In this study, I like how they set up their Community of Practice so that the individual could join a topic or subject matter group that was relevant to their situation or needs. As teachers we are often placed in professional development training that has no relevance to the needs of our classroom. I also like how they set up a dialogue for the members of the group. Participants not only posted their own ideas but shared thoughts and ideas through discussion with others in the group. It seemed to be less intimidating because much of the dialogue took place online. One of the factors that impacted the participants was time. Just like educators in the U.S., the educators in this study found it difficult to find the time to fully participate in these Communities of Practice and some did not even finish the modules. As a result, dialogue toward the end of the module fizzled out and was less engaging for some participants. That is one of my concerns with Communities of Practice. Sometimes if one is not being forced to complete a project, it does not get completed. It takes a lot of discipline to be part of a Community of Practice and a willingness to be there for the other group members.

    Summary: This user-friendly article discusses what CoPs are and what they look like. I appreciated the fact that Etienne Wenger says a CoP could be " … a tribe learning to survive, a band of artists seeking new forms of expression, a group of engineers working on similar problems, a clique of pupils defining their identity in the school, a network of surgeons exploring novel techniques, a gathering of first-time managers helping each other cope." However, he also adds, that sharing the same job or the same job title doesn't mean you are part of a CoP. A true community must interact and learn together! This article provides a great starting point for those who do not know much about CoP and / or where the concept came from.

    Great video, especially for those of us visual learners.

    I have to critique this video on two levels. First the video itself seemed more an exercise in using a non linear editor than in telling a story of communicating an idea. The message was lost in the many irrelevant images used by the authors of the video. Secondly it offed a minimal look at what connectivism is and the current thinking surrounding the use of connectivism as a learning theory. We need to hold electronic media to the same academic rigor used for scholarly peer review works. The authors of the video should have understood this as it was produced for a graduate level class. We as consumers of media need to be able to filter appropriate information for a given task at hand, and although alternatives to print media are desirable in education, the video was not able to address the theory level of connectivism effectively.

    Great video that has a section about how our students are "different" than when we were in school. "They [Students] expect to learn from technology because that is what they are used to." As soon as ALL teachers realize and accept this fact, then we as teachers can be one step closer to helping our students achieve their FULL potential!

    I like the idea of learners making meaningful choices. Anything that can guide students to make effective and relevant connections is a great resource. I also think teachers have a lot to learn about the way our students learn these days. The idea that students actually need to be a force in their own learning and that they expect instant gratification are concepts I have been seeing more frequently in my own classroom. Great resource!
