There were many great project ideas on this side but to get to the one I want you to look at scroll down to "Social Mobility" audio blogging. The group audio blogging activity had the student compare and then post their results using a VoiceThread. They were able to combine visual and recorded media and they had to think carefully about what they wanted to record.

Learning Communities in Classrooms - 0 views

  •
This paper is interesting because it focuses on learning communities amongst students rather than teachers. We often think of PLCs as an important aspect in creating a network amongst teachers but it is also an effective way of teaching in the classroom. There are several examples of this idea described in the paper.

Connectivism is based on the connections one uses to learn. In essence, learners should be creating new connections to increase learning. Veletsianos list three important points, groups, networks, and collectives, which affect connectivist learning.
  •
Wow Erin, This pdf has some extensive information on emerging technologies based on distance education. I like the definitions given to emerging technologies over the years by the Horizon report and how they are pretty consistent throughout the years.
  •
This book would be a great resource for many classrooms. I enjoyed looking at some of the parts to find out more. It is good to have many ideas to use in the classroom in case some of the ideas crash. This has so many to use which gives us many options.

Connections and communication are key with emerging technology, including social media and other teaching tools.

Facebook for College Admissions, Universities, and Higher Education - 0 views

This page has many case studies that point to successful use of Facebook with college students. This is a page from a company so you can have some idea as to the motivation. To put this into perspective this is the only company that is financially supported by the Gates foundation. In my opinion they are motivated by more than profit but by helping schools and students make connections.

Learning Networks in Practice - 8 views

  •
This article by Stephen Downes provides a great insight into what an effective PLN looks like and how it functions. I enjoyed reading about his second stage of PLNs, which is the "personal learning environment." This idea is presented as the evolution of PLNs due to technology and connectivism in the classroom.

Wow, there was a lot of good content in this article. One of my biggest take aways from the article is the great misapplication of online communities. The misapplication lies in the idea that a community follows an online course, like what we are doing right now in 543. The discussion community is created at the beginning of the course and members are active participants, during the course. Once the course ends, the community ends as well. This is not what the online community is intended to do. It is a long-term development of resources that needs to continue on.
  •
This reminded me a lot of an article I shared for this assignment that also discussed the need for currently used LMS-based systems to move toward encompassing PLNs and Web 2.0 tools to up their social networking components. I think this is definitely an important consideration, especially for educators working in an online environment.
  •
This article by Stephen Downes gives a definition of a community of practice and then discusses PLE's moving into networks and the characteristics of a learning network: diversity, autonomy connectedness and openness.
  •
As I was relatively unfamiliar with learning networks before this course, I wanted to find resources that showed me what they looked like and examples of how they can be used. This article introduces the importance of using digital tools effectively and empower ourselves to gain the knowledge the web offers. The author states that "Learning therefore evolves from being a transfer of content and knowledge to the production of content and knowledge". Working in a network, PLE or communities of practice allow learners to be creative about information and knowledge, instead of just consuming information and knowledge. The article highlights the key benefits of a PLN: diversity, autonomy, connectedness, and openness.

Rethinking Your Online Classroom with Connectivism - 8 views

  •
This post explains very clearly what the purpose of connectivism is and why it is critical to student learning. It explains 6 things educators should do with their students and how to encourage them to explore and connect with ideas. At the end it provides a few examples of tools readily available to use in connecting people and technology.

This is great, Courtney. I hadn't seen these 6 pieces before or had noticed them in previous research. It explains the theory nicely at the end of the first sections by saying that "knowledge does not exist in the heads of learners or instructors but through the variety of connections established amongst students, instructors and technologies." I think that this concept deserves more thought and analysis. Are moving away from knowledge contained within our minds in favor of connectedness and what effect will this have on our collective consciousness concerning history and an awareness of the past.
  •
Courtney, the more I look at Connectivism, the more I think it is learning of the 21st Century. Everyday in class I notice the connections students make - whether it is the Internet, collaboration from other teachers or parents or social media. There is so much knowledge out there to find. Now it is up to us teachers to help the kids find it. I feel less intimidated by not knowing everything. Let the universe help in our knowledge.
  •
What a great resource! Thanks for sharing @courtneylarue11. As you mentioned the "6 skills for connectivist pedagogs" is extremely valuable. I like reading all the reasons why this is needed NOW, because I whole heartedly agree but I can't wait until we get to the HOW this can happen in ALL classrooms.
  •
This article states the knowledge exists "through the variety of connections established amongst students, instructors, and technologies." It gives 6 skills that connectivist educators need and examples of networks and tools.
  •
Great article! I have been very intrigued about connectivism since I heard about it in my learning theories class. This article gives good reasoning behind connectivism as well as a few ideas for how to incorporate it.

Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age - 5 views

  •
This article reviews how behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism have all been central ideas that we based our teaching on. However, in the new digital age, it is becoming evident that we need to shift to a connectivism point of view. We need to use the resources we have to connect with teachers and learn from each other.

Connectivism: This article talks about connectivism model shifts with the learning society and that the educational field is slow to embrace and use new tools. Connectivism is essential for learners to grow in educational technology.
  •
This article was written by George Siemens the father of connectivism, focusing on how learning occurs through networking especially through the use of technology. The article also explains the differences between connectivism, behaviorism, constructivism, and cognitivism in a simple to read manner.
  •
This was the first article I read during my research. It really gave me a baseline understanding of connectivism. I liked the way that it explained how connectivism is different from other learning theories. Overall great article.
  •
In this article George Siemens relates connectivism to PLN's. He begins by explaining that knowledge is growing exponentially and now instead of being measured in decades, the life of knowledge is measured in years and even months. He goes onto explain that half of what is known today was not known a mere ten years ago and according to the American Society of Training and Documentation, knowledge in the world has doubled in the last ten years and continues to double every 18 months. He explains that networks are an integral part of growing one's knowledge base and our small world networks are made up of people who share our interests. He also lists eight principles of connectivism and connects these ideas to social networking. He concludes by stating that connectivism provides insight into learning skills and tasks needed for learners to be successful in a digital era.
  •
This article, written by George Siemens explains how connectivism is the theory behind the PLNs. The author describes how connectivism fills the limitations of behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism, the learning theories developed when learning was not impacted by technology. It is the complement. The author compares the connections in a PLN with pipes and says "The pipe is more important than the content within the pipe. Our ability to learn what we need for tomorrow is more important than what we know today." (Siemens, 2014)
  •
A detailed article on connectivism, written by one of the biggest promoters of Connectivism- George Siemens. There is a lot of great information on how this impacts organizations which was particularly interesting. We struggle with this all the time at my company- "Connectivism addresses the challenges that many corporations face in knowledge management activities. Knowledge that resides in a database needs to be connected with the right people in the right context in order to be classified as learning".

Professional and Personal Learning Networks - Literacy & NCTE - 1 views

  •
This article expresses the idea that our professional and personal learning and networks take place in many places and not just the classroom, though that is a part of it. However, learning can be just as valid if you meet in the local coffee shop or head out for lunch together. It encourages us to expand our ideas of what professional development really is. It's not just the conference or event we go to. It's on-going.
  •
I really enjoyed reading this article. I appreciate having a more informal setting for PLNs outside the classroom and think it helps with creativity! Thanks for sharing!
