The Influence and Outcomes of a STEM Education Research Faculty Community of Practice - 1 views

  •
STEM faculty members who are working in educational research are participating in communities of practice. The communities of practice were used to increase capacity, engagement, and collaboration amongst the members. Communities of practice can be differentiated depending on the needs to the members participating in the learning community. A vital part in communities of practice is that it's members need to share a common goal or vision and work collaboratively to contribute to the learning community.

Once A Teacher - PLN - 9 views

  •
PLN have been around forever but now we use technology to help increase those who can be involved. Most of the Personal Learning Networks are online and we can communicate with others from around the world. This article gives examples of how to use a PLN and how to build your own.

This is a good introductory look at what a PLN is. By reading their post and connecting other to it the author of this blog has just become a member or our PLN. I also enjoyed the nod to commoncraft one of my all time favorite resources to get people started.
  •
I really enjoyed this article, especially The Networked Student video. I thought it was particularly important that the video stated that in order for the student to make meaningful connections, they had to practice validating and evaluating sites to see which ones would be most valuable in their research.
  •
I enjoyed your article on "PLN: Your Personal Learning Network Made Easy." I never thought of of a PLN originally as our "family and friends, maybe other educators you worked with." This could really help newer teachers embracing technology "wrap their heads around what is happening" and how it really hasn't changed, just looks different.
  •
A good article on what type of people and tools can constitute a PLN.  It gives some good examples and provides some great tools that could be included in anyone's PLN.  It embeds a youtube video in it that enhances my understanding of a PLN.  It also helps me to differentiate between a PLN and a CoP.
  •
In this blog, educator Kate Klingensmith describes what a PLN is in general and also describes specific reasons why one can be useful to an educator. She also provides examples of how educators can use PLNs in beneficial ways.
  •
Another great PLN blog. Also has great information on Web 2.0. There is a plethora of information on this site for online learning. Def. a great read.
  •
I love the simple breakdown of the PLN on this site! I also really appreciate the table at the bottom that includes some great resources for getting the PLN started. This looks like a great blog! Thanks for sharing!
  •
Before taking this class, I have never heard of a PLN, but as I read more about it, its amazing to see how many PLNs we are involved with. They definitely have an effect on how we learn and exchange information.
  •
I liked the video clip that showed how networking can be beneficial. Simple video that explains it for people like me who are new the world of PLN's.
  •
I like the chart of resources. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around all of the social media tools available out there on the Internet, so the chart in this blog post is helpful. Thanks!

In Connectivism, No One Can Hear You Scream: a Guide to Understanding the MOOC Novice -... - 1 views

  •
Summary: This article identifies possible gaps in Connectivism (as a learning theory) and its interpretation when it comes to MOOCs. The article explores the principles that are not addressed or not supported by Connectivism. Some of these "forgotten" principles are: motivation, self-efficacy, cognitive load, prior knowledge, avoids scaffolding, doesn't differentiate between expert and novice, and ignores novices' needs.

Very interesting article, though I'm not sure I agree with some of the points the author attempts to make. For example, "Connectivist theory does not allow for novice support, from the design and instructor side." While this may have started out as the case, classes like the one we're in now are attempting to address this issue by arming educators with tools and methods for scaffolding novices into the networking world. :)
  •
I knew I was going to enjoy this article after the author said this " I do this because there is no "one size fits all" theory. Because there is no "one size fits all" student." I have been screaming this from the roof top since I stepped into the education and when trying to get some instructors to step out of their comfort zone that is not producing the results we need in the classroom. I learned a good deal from this article especially the four ways to undermine self-efficacy . Great Find.
  •
Loved the line "I'm ideologically promiscuous."
  •
I like the point made that not everyone is actually a "Node" in a MOOC or similar connectivist structure. I agree with the author that this will always be the case because we unfortunately are not " all digitally literate nodes, knowledge is in the network, we are all motivated, have good learning strategies, and information sifting abilities, and can cope with multi-platform information streams...". Great find!

The networked student model for construction of personal learning environments: Balanci... - 11 views

  •
As students construct personal learning environments, teacher instruction and support is likely to be needed. PLE's must be constructed based on needs, and students may or may not be able to articulate what their learning needs are.

This study covers teacher and student PLEs and details the necessary components for bringing students into the 21st Century with differentiated digital resources.
  •
I like the visuals for the models. It makes it very clear how to utilize digital resources and clearly explains the method, data and design of the model.
  •
This article explores a Networked Student Model and a test case which seeks to understand how teachers can support a more learner-centered and autonomuos learning experience.
  •
This article discusses the difficulties that are posed to instructors as the PLN grows for each student. It discusses the need for student autonomy but with instructor guidance. It shows how the instructor should be a foundation of the PLN but the student should be encouraged to utilize all the tools available.
  •
The article also compares a networked teacher model to that of a networked student model so teachers can see how similar the two really are. Although the teacher acts as a guide by nurturing and encouraging students throughout the process, the student is the one who controls what is learned or explored. The students can activate their own learning or shut it off. Just like adults. Fascinating.
  •
Today, students already have personal learning environments, but as teachers we have the ability to forge new pathways to learning by utilizing what kids already know and modeling collaboration and exploration.
  •
Wow! What a cool article. I really enjoyed the picture of the Networked student. This article is like a how to for a teacher wanting to teach the 21st century student. It makes me wonder if our school system should provide a class on how to set up a method for each student to display their learning or their personal learning environment.

7 things you should know about personal learning environments - 6 views

I wanted to know more about the difference between a personal learning network and a personal learning environment. This article does a great job of breaking down the differences even though they obviously work hand in hand.

I agree with you that this was a great source to see the difference between PLEs and PLNs. I think it was set out in a straight forward way that was easy to read and figure out.
  •
I liked this source because a majority use PLEs and PLNs as synonyms, and while they are closely related; they do have differences. The article was relatively short and a great resource for outlining the differences between the PLEs and PLNs.
  •
What I love about this source is the section that discusses why PLEs are significant - I love how it talks about how it is student-driven. It is up to the learner to be in charge of their own learning path and provides authentic learning opportunities. With the creation of 2.0 tools, educators are able to differentiate to different learners with the creations of these tools and pairing students that are in the same skill-set or have similar interests for them to learn information and assist in making connections.
  •
I like this source and how it explains PLEs, why they are important, who they are for, and even the downsides to them. It makes it an easy read and easy to find the information you are looking for. I also like how it includes a case study to align with the information that is given.

What is a Community of Practice? - YouTube - 0 views

Interview with Etienne Wenger on the learning theory behind communities of practice. He explains, CoP's are a collaboration of ideas people have an interest in.

Cultivating Communities of Practice: Making Them Grow - YouTube - 2 views

  •
The video by Bruce Knox helped me to reacquaint myself with Communities of Practice. I like how he explains the parts to consider and if one already exists.
  •
Very clearly laid out. I like the way it defines a community of practice and the purpose. And the three areas that need to be developed: the community, domain and practice. Communities of practices are not created but rather are fostered - nice differentiation.
  •
Video sharing what and why we want Communities of Practice. This class could be considered a CoP, we are grouping together with similar interests, to share ideas and get better at what we do.

Personal Learning Networks for Educators - 3 views

YouTube video giving great reasons for the PLN, the role of the PLN and an overview of one person's PLN.  Gives one a pretty good understanding of the 'why' and 'how' of Personal Learning Networks.

How a PLN can be beneficial and what resources you could include in your own Personal Learning Network.
  •
This short, engaging video provides two excellent reasons for educators in particular to create a PLN: accessibility and responsibility. The author mentions that educators need to be more responsible for their own professional development. This video switches from the "why" to the "how", but the "why" portion is an excellent resource on its own.
  •
This video begins by describing the reasons why you should create and maintain a PLN. It goes on to describe that a PLN is a 'two-way' street where you not only absorb information but also share with others your expertise. The author goes on to describe his PLN which includes ways to find answers to questions he doesn't know, how to collect information from other experts and also how to share your own expertise.
  •
I think the author makes a great point with the "two-way street" analogy. It helps differentiate the qualities of PLNs versus PLEs and reminds us that we can be a valuable resource in others' PLNs.
  •
In this video, the author explains the reasons educators should focus on building their Personal Learning Networks. This guy is pretty funny and does a good job explaining why PLN's are important.
