Becoming a Connected Educator: Building Your Personal Learning Network (PLN) – Inside Teaching MSU - 4 views

  •
This Q&A style article outlines the importance of building a PLN. The source is from a post-secondary outlet but the discussion can be beneficial for educators at any level. I particularly like the focus on using social media to help foster a productive PLN environment; it relates well to the content of 543.

I also liked the style, you could scroll down the page reading the relevant questions and answers without having to wade through the info you weren't looking for at this time. It allowed for a more connectivistic (if that's a thing) learning approach.
  •
Thanks for sharing this. It really connected with me especially when it used a map to describe a PLN. It makes complete since to look at it that way. I also liked the way it emphasized creating a PLN online and described ways to create one.
  •
Q&A article going over what to look for when creating a PLN, where to look on social media and in person.
  •
This is a great How-to article explaining how to form a PLN. I like how it mentions Twitter EdChats. I got into these a year or two ago and they are great!

The Importance of Personal Learning Network as a Teacher of Today - 0 views

  •
With budget cuts and changing expectations of what students need to learn, teachers need to be life-long learners to keep up with the changes. The Internet is a resource that allows teachers to collaborate with others, share resources, and solve challenges in the classroom.

Oscar Berg: The collaboration pyramid (or iceberg) - 6 views

  •
I found this visual to be an interesting model of what happens below the surface in a collaborative setting. Networking and building up a PLN certainly seem to be core activities, but as Berg mentions, it's often not recognized or valued.

I appreciated this visual of collaboration, too. The "under the surface" work is often the most essential, but least visible component to successful collaborative project. The most foundational layer requires individuals to make themselves visible...and for many that is the most challenging part!
  •
I like how this source provided a unique way to look at collaboration. Collaboration is a skill that I am always trying to instill in my students. I also enjoyed that they included the graphic to help the reader understand the concept as well.
  •
Renee, I appreciate you including this blog post with our Diigo collection of resources. This idea of the iceberg makes so much sense. It remembers me a lot of research surrounding language learning as well. There is so much below the surface that is hard to articulate or appreciate. This visual will be very helpful as I work with my teachers and admin next year. It is important that professionals understand that within PLNs there is a lot that happens that cannot be seen, yet it is these powerful connections and interactions that will most effective a teacher's practice

Edutech Wiki: Communities of Practice - 4 views

  •
I chose to share this link for two reasons: 1) It describes communities of practice, ways to support CoPs through networking, social learning, and online identities. 2) It's presented via a wiki, which is a platform that embodies the spirit of SNL, CoPs and PLNs.

Angela another great pick. I think the biggest key to this resource is a practical demonstration of a PLN for us to utilize. As information is presented we should not only be able to explain but use the resources! Living the theory is just as important as knowing it.
  •
This is a very thorough breakdown of what makes up a community of practice. Also some good links in there (though a few were broken which I find common in Wiki's). Thanks to you posting this site/CoP which I had never heard of http://www.tappedin.org/.
  •
Angela, While doing the research I came across this site as well but did not incorporate it my finds. I'm a big fan of Wikipedia and use it quite a bit for definitions and attaining public domain images. This Edutech Wiki is very complete with definitions and examples. A great resource.
  •
I've never seen the edutech wiki site. I will have to remember this. I also like using wiki from the basics like definitions. This has some great definitions and break down of communities of practice.
  •
I love to gather information from WIKIs. CoP networks are present in almost everything we do. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I found this site to be very informative in a brief way! I find sites such as this a nice way to get started on something...find out enough so you know where to go next!
  •
I appreciate the comment in this wiki about communities of practice developing a common store of knowledge. When I first heard the term, communities of practice, a few years ago, I thought they were simply referring to a group of people with something in common, not necessarily a group with a common purpose or goal toward which they are actively working.

Project K-Nect Math Initiative - 0 views

  •
Project K-Nect is designed to create a supplemental resource for secondary at-risk students to focus on increasing their math skills through a common and popular technology - mobile smartphones.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Project K-Nect provided smartphones to allow students to communicate and collaborate with teachers, tutors, and other students. This technology allowed the students the ability to master math skills and knowledge.
  •
In North Carolina, about 100 ninth-grade students in four schools in North Carolina have been issued smartphones for use in their math classes. They use the phones to network among themselves on problems, receive instruction from teachers, play math-improving games, or watch an animation showing the problem being solved.
  •
Through a grant from a smartphone maker, students were given devices that would allow them to contact other students and tutors about math problems when not at school. It also gave them access to materials for class that they otherwise would not have had away from school. While this wouldn't be applicable in all schools, the social networking aspect of the program helped students better manage their personal learning experience.

European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning - 5 views

  •
This journal article dives into the three biggest reservoirs of information based on the principles of connectivism: social networks, online classrooms, and virtual reality learning platforms. The author identifies some of these specific resources and addresses how they relate to connectivism.
  •
I like this article. I like that the author breaks down the reservoirs of information in a graphic. I also like that the author talks about different social media that aren't as common or well-known. The examples of uses of podcasts, virtual learning and mobile devices are interesting in that I never considered using Nintendo DS in that manner.

Developing learning community in online asynchronous college courses: the role of teaching presence - 0 views

  •
The researchers conducted a study of 2,036 online students at thirty-two State University of New York colleges in the SUNY Learning Network. Participants responded to a forty-two-item survey that investigates the connection between students' sense of learning community as measured by Rovai's Classroom Community Scale and teaching presence as measured by the Community of Inquiry Model. The study provides insight into the important relationship between instructor's online behaviors and perceived establishment of community. The complexity of the research gives rise to further studies to continue to identify the exact instructor behaviors are most effective in establishing a course presence, while staying true to constructivist pedagogy.
