I have to balance reading with other learning sources and so this video on Communities of Practice in action is simple and effective. This video was helpful in showing how a Community of Practice is useful to individuals. I also found it helpful to be reminded that there may also be a face to face element in a Community of Practice, and it does not all have to be digital.

After placing students into one of two social network groups, this study finds that Twitter was more effective. One group used Ning to interact with lecturers and the other used Twitter. The Twitter group scored on average one grade higher than Ning users.

This article is helping me see how if I were to create a Venn diagram of these two concepts, there would be some overlap. Keep in mind, the article was crafted in 1996, which I think adds strength to it because it is not clouded with current conventional ways of communication. I can see the points Panitz brings out where cooperative learning is much like how I was taught to teach science. We have groups, most likely created by me, and each member of the group plays a role. In more recent years (like the last 15 or so), there has been more of a push for inquiry which emphasizes putting control in the students' hands. Let the students decide the outcome (collaborative) as opposed to the teacher knowing what the outcome will be (cooperative). In my later years of teaching I was striving toward bringing in as much inquiry as possible, but even in 2010 I found students still molded into vessels who thought the job of the teacher was to fill them.

This very brief article discusses how learning theories are being questioned by educators due to the demands of the digital age. They discuss how students today are required to find the knowledge and information they need in order for them to "internalise it.". Technology has changed the way we learn and process information but they ask if there are any biological implications. The references provide a good source for further reading.

I like how this article addressed informal learning. How do we support our students differently in a digital age that supports informal learning?
