Slide Share: Strategic Communities of Practice - 1 views

  •
While searching for CoP's for Macintosh Computers and Adobe Software for educators, I came across this site and felt that this CoP presented by Slide Share would be a good resource for CoPs through the use of slides, since I see this tool being used in Moodle.
  •
I really enjoyed this slideshow. It definitely takes away from the monotony of reading PDF articles. The slides provide enough information for users to understand CoP.

The Lore project is a LME that was created for use in a regular classroom. Designed to run something like twitter and moodle and facebook, it allows teachers to set up classes, moderate who joins, and add content. Students can help eachother and suddenly the classroom becomes a community.

Suggestions on ways to maximize efficiency, reminders that telling/sharing may not be the same as facilitating, and examples of ways to turn routine activities into collaborative or connective activities.

I actually found myself getting excited about the thought of communicating with staff in a more effective and efficient way. So many times we attend staff meetings and have to take that time to read articles instead of using it to benefit our students' learning. I would love to see this changed SOON! #EdTechSN

Connectivism is based on the connections one uses to learn. In essence, learners should be creating new connections to increase learning. Veletsianos list three important points, groups, networks, and collectives, which affect connectivist learning.
  •
Wow Erin, This pdf has some extensive information on emerging technologies based on distance education. I like the definitions given to emerging technologies over the years by the Horizon report and how they are pretty consistent throughout the years.
  •
This book would be a great resource for many classrooms. I enjoyed looking at some of the parts to find out more. It is good to have many ideas to use in the classroom in case some of the ideas crash. This has so many to use which gives us many options.

Connections and communication are key with emerging technology, including social media and other teaching tools.

A theory of online learning as online participation - 0 views

  •
The author, a Department of Media Technology research professor at Uppsala University, Sweden, forms an initial theory suggesting online participation equates with online learning. Reasoning is linked from constructivist theories from the 1990s to social constructivist research focusing on participation as a condition for learning, similar to connectivist theory. The author concludes from a survey of studies that online learning participation is a complex process requiring meaningful engagement with others. His theory of online learning as online participation opens the door for dialogue and critique to further explore and extend the theory.

Librarians Who Lead - 0 views

  • Instead of investing in scads of state-of-the-art computers and expensive commercially produced courseware, she says, the school district has made a remarkable investment in the high school’s human resources.
  • Luhtala and other members of the high school’s Information and Communication Technology team have woven Moodle, the free, open-source, online course management software, into the curriculum.
  • We have six years’ worth of analysis of annotated bibliographies, which we consider the hallmark of higher-order thinking— evaluation of reading, as opposed to regurgitation.

  • “We work with a fair amount of data to measure student learning in information and communication technology. We also rely on emerging technology to communicate and collaborate with students and teachers.”
  • The library media center’s home page entices students, teachers and parents to click on a colorful lineup of icons familiar to everyone who enjoys connecting via social media: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google, and VoiceThread, which the library has been using to promote book chats and reading for pleasure. Luhtala also regularly posts instructional videos on the Web for students and teachers.
  • “A librarian today is a facilitator and a leader for the teachers, for curricular learning, for interdisciplinary instruction, and is also a professional development person,” Luhtala says. “But we’re still school-based teachers. And it’s actually kind of beautiful. We like it just that way.”

Thanks for sharing, David. I like that Mackley and Vincent show the various branches of their PLNs because it gives me a frame of reference and helps me see where I need to focus my own efforts. I find the concept of the PLE to be fuzzy, and feel that I need to learn more about it and its relationship to the PLN.
  •
I liked this source because of the clear descriptions that it provides. I also loved the visuals at the end with the different networks that they are tied to.
  •
This article does a nice job of explaining PLNs and the theory surrounding them. The article includes definitions of personal learning environments, personal learning networks, and connectivism. I also like that it includes diagrams to compare their PLNs, as well as an introductory video.
  •
I picked this one, because it has a video that I found helpful. I learn better with sound and pictures. It stresses that PLNs are not things, but rather ideas. The other reason that I include this in my list is that the article actually provides diagrams of what different people's PLNs look like. Given that we're learning about this sort of thing in this unit, I thought I'd also mention this. Finally, I liked that this article acknowledges that according to the Theory of Connectivism, you don't even have to know the person who you're learning from.
  •
This article features an easy to digest definition of personal learning networks which includes a connection to connectivism in explanation of how PLNs work. The resource is made even more accessible in helping a reader understand the subject matter with a video and infographic examples of the authors own personal PLNs.
  •
This article gives a brief overview of PLNs and the theories behind them. It explains connectivism and its role in the benefits of PLNs. It also gives two examples of the authors' PLNs in the form of graphics.
