What a great resource for district leaders! The bullet points under "districts can" are clear and non-intimidating, the kind of statements superintendents should be able to make to their technology departments to make it happen. The action steps are very helpful, and provide concrete guidance on how to bring in technology to support professional learning in the district.
  •
I like how this resource states"WHY" we need to support Professional Devlopment and CoP's and provides action steps for superintendents. A very valuable resource for school boards and upper management.
  •
Thanks for sharing this Cate. I follow CoSN and am usually up on their stuff, but I had not seen this resource. I love the fact that it includes action steps for superintendents. Too often that level of leadership is left out, then people wonder why change is not really taking place.

This provides district administrators with concrete steps for building communities of practice that can help educators develop technical abilities. Suggestions include finding pockets of excellence and working with and benchmarking from other school districts.

Infiltrating the Walled Garden - 0 views

  •
by Wm. Beasley Learning Management Systems (LMS) are walled gardens. They provide substantial control over the environment in which learning activities take place, and at first glance this appears to be a good thing. For this reason they are often relatively appealing to faculty members beginning to make the transition from fully traditional classroom instruction.

CoP's as Social Learning Systems - 2 views

  •
In this article Wegner continues to expand upon CoP's by defining their role in organizations and highlighting the success of organizations in using CoP's in coordination with social learning systems. Through this process organizations are able to meet a greater variety of needs for their employees. Wegner highlights how this process is the antithesis of normal "management styles" which is usually a top-down format. However, by working and associating in a variety of learning systems throughout regions or areas, people are more knowledgeable within their field.

The Integration of Personal Learning Environments & Open Network Learning Environments - 2 views

  •
This article addresses the many challenges of setting up a Personal Learning Environment. The article also discusses the many benefits and various modes of collaboration and online discussion forums.
  •
This article is about how learning management systems can be set up to encourage the development of Personal Learning Environments and connectivist learning. Currently many LMS are not developing students who are reaching their potential in creativity and autonomous learning. The large limiting factor in this include lack of student or even instructor knowledge of tools within an LMS. This is creating students who are dependent on the resources available within their LMS rather than capable of finding their own resources to guide their learning. When designing an online course it is crucial that students have the opportunity to discuss their learning and to share resources among each other.

The idea of managing an organizations body of knowledge. This article talks about how a wiki can aid in a community of practice. Educators are not great about sharing what they know (ironic right). The effort to share knowledge needs to be intentional.

Project K-Nect Math Initiative - 0 views

  •
Project K-Nect is designed to create a supplemental resource for secondary at-risk students to focus on increasing their math skills through a common and popular technology - mobile smartphones.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Project K-Nect provided smartphones to allow students to communicate and collaborate with teachers, tutors, and other students. This technology allowed the students the ability to master math skills and knowledge.
  •
In North Carolina, about 100 ninth-grade students in four schools in North Carolina have been issued smartphones for use in their math classes. They use the phones to network among themselves on problems, receive instruction from teachers, play math-improving games, or watch an animation showing the problem being solved.
  •
Through a grant from a smartphone maker, students were given devices that would allow them to contact other students and tutors about math problems when not at school. It also gave them access to materials for class that they otherwise would not have had away from school. While this wouldn't be applicable in all schools, the social networking aspect of the program helped students better manage their personal learning experience.

Luhtala also regularly posts instructional videos on the Web for students and teachers.
  • “A librarian today is a facilitator and a leader for the teachers, for curricular learning, for interdisciplinary instruction, and is also a professional development person,” Luhtala says. “But we’re still school-based teachers. And it’s actually kind of beautiful. We like it just that way.”

Unlocking the Secrets to School Change | Rob Mancabelli - 1 views

  • Unlocking the Secrets to School Change
  • What’s more important is that you surround your teachers and staff with systems that will promote their ability to change. Ask yourself the following questions about the people at your school:
  • Are they integrated into the selection of their content? Are they consulted in the design of their professional development? Do they receive training from experts who break down the skills into manageable parts? Are their technologies drop-dead simple to use? Do they have time to practice? Can they share their successes and victories with each other, learning and re-learning continuously?
