Bates, T. (2014). The role of communities of practice in a digital age. Retrieved from: http://www.tonybates.ca/2014/10/01/the-role-of-communities-of-practice-in-a-digital-age/

The author gives his take on communities of practice (CoP). He cites Wenger's (2000) three characteristics of a community of practices and gives insight as to how to build them. He further explores how informal learning occurs digitally through CoPs. He discusses massive open online courses (MOOCs) in particular. The author seeks input from other educators and engages them in discussions.

I enjoyed reading this blog post due to the clarity the author brought to the discussion on communities of practice. Often, articles and research on educational practices and ideas can become overly theoretical. I find that researchers who are the most helpful have a way of combining theory and practicality in a manner that is clear to the practitioner. Tony Bates has done just that in this post on CoPs. I found the graphic organizer on CoPs to be especially helpful. Additionally, his discussion on CoPs in the digital age (especially concerning MOOCs) adds a very important layer of thought to the course materials we have on CoPs. Thanks for sharing this, Darin. It is such a powerful resource!

I liked this blog post especially for the explanation of the 7 design principles for a CoP. I know most of what we've been reading says that CoPs should be managed as little as possible by outside entities (like administration) I've found that there are some things that need a bit of tending to for a CoP to be productive. We don't always know how to facilitate the ongoing conversations and I gained some ideas from this article on how to keep things interesting and fresh.

I thought that this was a very informative blog post. I really liked the way that the author broke down the information and included a graphic to help. It was also very interesting to learn about how to design a community of practice.
