Pedagogical Foundations for Personal Learning - 4 views

  •
This slide show outlines and describes the shift from virtual learning environments to personal learning environments. It includes multiple infographics that contribute to understanding.
  •
It was interesting to look through this slideshow Courtney. I work as an online high school teacher and most of my job is done through an LMS. Learning about these PLNs though has me looking for ways to make sure my students are making connections.

Siemens, George. "Connectivism: A learning theory for the digital age." (2014). - 0 views

  •
This article explains the differences between behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and connectivism. The author makes the argument that behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism all have limitations to learning in the digital world. The author argues that connectivism is a beneficial learning model, especially in the digital era.
  •
his article points out how the rapid increase of technology in our lives is changing how we need to educate. A few areas it points to in supporting this argument is the trend that knowledge is often not following a linear path, how the half life of knowledge is becoming shorter and shorter and how the capacity to learn more outweighs the amount of knowledge currently known. Connectivism becomes important when facing these challenges because it allows us to have access to a much broader range of knowledge than we would otherwise. Often times in our world today the collective knowledge of many individuals is more valuable than the sole knowledge of a single expert.

This article goes over the differences between connectivism, cognitivism and behaviorism. Society is changing and how we interact with people has changed.

Connected Educator - 3 views

  •
This video provides the importance and opportunity of connecting using social networking and building up educators through connecting with each other. There are many examples of how being connected has worked for different teachers.
  •
Educators have always been connected and new tools help them get connected easier to other knowledge sources. Like the interviewed people say in the video, how do we know that we are doing well if we are not connected and get feedback? I completely agree with the idea of the need of being connected to students, colleagues, parents, community...to be a 21st century educator.

Hi Jennifer, I never thought to look at Pinterest for anything like this but after seeing this resource I'll definitely keep it in mind! Great find, Pinterest is such as easy way to compile and share information and resources and this one has a lot of good links!
  •
Nice find Jennifer! I'm so much more into browsing a Pinterest page for resources. This delivery method is giving me ideas for my next Teaching Online course I will facilitate at Pierce. It's funny how first impressions of a newer app makes some thing that it wouldn't be useful in a learning environment. But Pinterest is just an easy way to curate any kind of information.
  •
So many resources, so little time... Its great to have so many of these resources in one place. The images definitely help determine which resource to investigate first.
  •
This is a nice resource! Never would have guessed 5 years ago that I would be looking at Pinterest as a resource for a class. As you mentioned, it's nice to view pictures to help process and understand a concept, much like the project we completed to tie all of these topics together. Thanks for the post!
  •
I signed up for Pinterest last year but rarely touched it once the school year started. This was a great reminder of it's usefulness and incredible depth of resources that are out there. Thanks for the reminder.
  •
This is a Pinterest source used for PLNs that offers numerous resources for educators and personal learning networks.
  •
I have yet to get into Pinterest, feel it might be a black hole for me. These are some great PLN pins. The images alone give you a good idea of ways you can build your PLE.

Education 3.0: Learning Anywhere, Anytime - 1 views

  •
This sources is a brief introduction to education 3.0. It outlines the meaning of education 3.0, compares it to 1.0 and 2.0, and gives additional resources for more information.
  •
Web 2.0 is when you interact with the internet, like I am doing right now. Diigo is an example of web 2.0 tools. Web 3.0 is when the internet interacts with you. For example, Google has all this data on you that when you search for something you get different search results than others who do the same search.

What is a PLN? - 12 views

  •
A short, engaging YouTube video on defining Personal Learning Networks.

This is one of the videos I watched on YouTube as well, Melodie! It does such a great job demonstrating a large amount of information about PLNs in a very short time frame. I thought there were two really critical points made in this video. First, Lalande makes it clear that a PLN does not necessarily have to be online, but it is the digital interaction does make a PLN special. I also liked the way he presented all of the options for interaction (i.e. a lurker or sharer) as well as the networking tool options, such as Twitter or YouTube. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I thought the video did a very good job of describing a PLN in a very efficient manner but matter of fact way. It was simplistic, yet allowed the view to comprehend the extensive nature of a PLN. The most important part of the video in my mind is when it talks about it is something you can choose to participate when you want and pick and choose things that are best suited for you!
  •
Melodie, thank you for sharing this video. Youtube has such great resources, what a great way to explain PLNs to colleagues. I especially appreciate how it specifically described the network as the one you get involved in when, where and how you want to. I appreciate how he describes how you can be heavily invested or not, but that you will gain a larger benefit if you leave the "lurker" phase and invest more.
  •
Love having short snippets/videos that describe a topic in brief. Sometimes, a topic can become so cumbersome so quick. This was an informative video, short, and to the point. Thanks for posting!
  •
I really enjoy the simplicity of this video while at the same time the depth of understanding it gives in such a brief period of time. For me this video really drives home the effectiveness technology can have in presenting potentially overwhelming information in a very easy to understand manner.
  •
In my opinion, the key words of this video are "what", because you choose what to share, "where" and "when" to do it. It is brief but powerful. Thanks Melodie for sharing it!

Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age - 2 views

  •
This source focuses on connectivity and what it means for learners. It touches on the idea that we now need to teach students to make connections instead of assuming that they understand how to make them already. It also talks a little bit about how making connections help people learn in different ways and learn how to access new information.
  •
The link given above doesn't work as it is. It has an extra quote at the end. You may want to remove it. Connectivism is presented in this articles as an alternative to traditional learning theories such as behaviorism and constructivism. I found it valuable to refresh my memory regarding different learning theories and their limitations. It was valuable to take a deep look at connectivism and the explanation related to how it could be the learning theory of present day digital age.

Looking at Connectivism as a New Learning Theory - OnlineUniversities.com - 6 views

Great share! I love the video of the student and how connectivism is being used as a learning theory. It also talks about the strategies one needs to be a learner within this theory.
  •
Thanks for sharing! I really like how this article is organized and discusses the implications of connectivism. I also found it interesting how the article emphasizes knowing where to look or find things as more important than knowing the actual "facts." Knowing where and how to look is essential in being a life-long learner and professional development.
  •
I simply enjoy how easy of a read this source is. Articles are so boring and make it hard for me to concentrate while I'm reading and this sources is still giving valuable information, but offers an easy to read layout and language.
  •
This is a blog entry, which can make me skeptical of the quality of the information. With digital use, our brain is rewired. If this isn't reason enough that we should not be teaching like it is 1980, I don't know what is.

Community of Practice Design Guide - 14 views

Even though I am becoming more acclimated to the non-linear arrangements of websites and the Internet, in general, it is still nice to see a well formatted document that clearly lists its points and is somewhat old-fashioned in presenting more recently cultivated information. This is the type of arrangement I needed to help me visualize CoP's.
  •
How to guide on using Communities of Practice in higher education.
  •
A step by step guide for designing and cultivating CoPs from the Educause Library of free resources
  •
I really enjoyed this article as it did provide a very clear distinction to a CoP and how they generate around a particular goal or common objectives. The one aspect of the article that I found really fascinating dealt with how to create a CoP and how it spoke of the cultivation of a CoP. It is not something that grows automatically, but must be intentional in nature. This requires the design, formalization of the community, and planning activities and core concepts for the CoP. It is not imperative that a CoP is fully structured from the beginning as the CoP will ultimately identfiy its main tenants over the period of growth.
  •
This guide provides a practical interpretation of the theoretical underpinnings of communities of practice (CoPs) in higher education. The guide begins with a definition, review of the purpose of CoPs, as well as their lifecycle. The authors also outline the stages of development in a CoP. This section includes guiding questions and activities to help others facilitate the development process within their own CoPs. I found this resource to be helpful in visualizing the process of developing CoPs.
  •
This source is set up differently than the others that I found. It is focused more on why communities are important, and how to build them. It also provides some good visuals that represent types of communities, how to grow communities, and different ways to grow and cultivate those relationships and communities.
  •
This is a great guide from Educause on the "nuts and bolts" of establishing a PLN. This resource provides a step-by-step guide to establishing a CoP.
  •
This article is really helpful since it gives practical there are some things you can do. My favorite is "Design." You can not just set up spaces and expect people to interact. You have to drive purpose and there has to be meaning there.

Connectivist Learning Objects and Learning Styles - 3 views

  •
The article takes a look at learning process behind connectivism. It also compares constructivism to connectivism. It describes the features of connectivist learning objects or CLOs and the integration of CLOs together to contribute to learning. It also has some extra information like construction and communication or interchange of CLOs.
  •
In this article, the authors compare constructivism and connectivism and look at how constructivism is moving towards connectivism. One important idea or theory is the use of the web in a more "collaborative framework." For example, individuals will collect, reflect, connect, and publish information from the web.
  •
Interesting to see the point of view from the authors about some shared learning experiences that make possible informal learning from spontaneous connections between open networks. Most of the times it is said that the members of the network choose the other members to get connected but it is also important to pay attention to the unplanned connections.

Critical connections: personal learning environments and information literacy - 2 views

  •
This article explains activity theory model as a good tool for understanding the interpretations and conceptualizations of personal learning environments. I like the graphical representation of the elements of PLE. I like the set of questions researchers leave at the end of the article; some of them I already had in mind.
  •
This site provides a paper written about the connections between personal learning environments and information literacy. It outlines how information literacy intersects with the goals of personal learning environments.
  •
Position learners in active, participatory roles with authentic learning opportunities. The research paper assignment has failed to keep up with modern literacies. A PLE is informal learning and learner driven. The learner makes choices.

Programming is making its way to schools around the world and there's an authentic need for diverse ways to introduce computational thinking and coding to a whole generation, not just us geeky types. Diane has found successful ways to introduce the topic to students who previously didn't consider themselves equipped for programming.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie, Book - Barnes & Noble - 0 views

  • Chris ShoemakerCopyright 2006 Reed Business Information. - School Library Journal Gr 7-10Exploring Indian identity, both self and tribal, Alexie's first young adult novel is a semiautobiographical chronicle of Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, a Spokane Indian from Wellpinit, WA. The bright 14-year-old was born with water on the brain, is regularly the target of bullies, and loves to draw. He says, "I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and my cartoons are tiny little lifeboats." He expects disaster when he transfers from the reservation school to the rich, white school in Reardan, but soon finds himself making friends with both geeky and popular students and starting on the basketball team. Meeting his old classmates on the court, Junior grapples with questions about what constitutes one's community, identity, and tribe. The daily struggles of reservation life and the tragic deaths of the protagonist's grandmother, dog, and older sister would be all but unbearable without the humor and resilience of spirit with which Junior faces the world. The many characters, on and off the rez, with whom he has dealings are portrayed with compassion and verve, particularly the adults in his extended family. Forney's simple pencil cartoons fit perfectly within the story and reflect the burgeoning artist within Junior. Reluctant readers can even skim the pictures and construct their own story based exclusively on Forney's illustrations. The teen's determination to both improve himself and overcome poverty, despite the handicaps of birth, circumstances, and race, delivers a positive message in a low-key manner. Alexie's tale of self-discovery is a first purchase for all libraries.
