    Students from Ashwaubenon High School in Wisconsin created a video about the dangers of texting and driving and shared it with others by posting it on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. The project helped to increase awareness of the dangers of texting and driving through social media that students are using everyday anyway.

    This Twitter account belongs to a Principal at Kurt Hahn EL School in Brooklyn New York.  While this may not be thought of as using, social networking in education, I say it is.  Education is not just about classrooms and lessons, it is about about community and parents as well.  Keeping the community, parents, and students up to date on happenings at the school and profiling teachers and student achievements is an important part of education.  This is a great way to use Twitter.

    Even though this article was written back in 1997, it still has some really great info.     All of George Siemens articles have been so good. He really captures the essence of connectivism and why it is important in this day and age. There is so much information available on the internet nowadays and it is always changing. Creating a PLN helps filter all of it and lets us adapt it well into our teaching and learning.

We often think of PLCs as an important aspect in creating a network amongst teachers but it is also an effective way of teaching in the classroom.     One of the things that really stands out for me in this article is the idea that you need to be consistent to get real results from PLNs.     Although this article focuses largely on tips for setting up and using a PLN, I appreciated the brief introduction about PLNs, their basis in connectivism and how it really can improve us as professionals. The first tip also focuses on the need for engaging in the collaborative process which is central to the success of PLNs.

    This article is awesome and I love the thoughtful advice that it provides for creating a professional learning network. It describes the fact that technology has taken over the world, making it much easier to connect with anyone around you. Communicating and interacting with others can be crucial for gaining information. Asking questions, participating often, and being polite are just a few suggestions provided for utilizing PLNs.

    In this article George Siemens relates connectivism to PLN's. He begins by explaining that knowledge is growing exponentially and now instead of being measured in decades, the life of knowledge is measured in years and even months. He goes onto explain that half of what is known today was not known a mere ten years ago and according to the American Society of Training and Documentation, knowledge in the world has doubled in the last ten years and continues to double every 18 months. He explains that networks are an integral part of growing one's knowledge base and our small world networks are made up of people who share our interests. He also lists eight principles of connectivism and connects these ideas to social networking. He concludes by stating that connectivism provides insight into learning skills and tasks needed for learners to be successful in a digital era.

    This article, written by George Siemens explains how connectivism is the theory behind the PLNs. The author describes how connectivism fills the limitations of behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism, the learning theories developed when learning was not impacted by technology. It is the complement. The author compares the connections in a PLN with pipes and says "The pipe is more important than the content within the pipe. Our ability to learn what we need for tomorrow is more important than what we know today." (Siemens, 2014)

    A detailed article on connectivism, written by one of the biggest promoters of Connectivism- George Siemens. There is a lot of great information on how this impacts organizations which was particularly interesting. We struggle with this all the time at my company- "Connectivism addresses the challenges that many corporations face in knowledge management activities. Knowledge that resides in a database needs to be connected with the right people in the right context in order to be classified as learning".

    This is a training resource that I came across from a school district in Indiana. It focuses on how professional learning communities or communities of practice can avoid becoming a passing fad in educational reform. It gives three "big ideas" that educational CoPs need to focus on to truly be successful. They are: ensuring that students learn, creating a culture of collaboration, focusing on results by holding themselves accountable.

    Thank you for sharing this. Just today, my school discussed starting PLC's and I feel that is important to focus on those three big ideas. I feel that this article makes us look closely at the questions and the answer to those questions before we begin creating networks and communities. Makes me think of the UbD-approach and how we should think about what the goals are and what we want our PLC's to do specifically before making them vent sessions amongst teachers.

This is a higher order skill that many adults have not mastered, and some teachers are expecting it of primary age students. The author also indicates a debate among connectivism adherents about the value of "lurkers". Some see it as s valuable activity that introduces learners to the community gradually.     Great tips. It does take some significant time to get it all set up but I'm finding that the organization is paying off because when my son ends up napping longer than expected, I can open up Feedly and have lots of cool articles in the line-up to read without searching. Now I'm adding Twitter to the mix. People constantly ask how I have time to go to school and I think it boils down to tactics like this that allow you to capitalize on those unexpected breaks.

    Most of the articles I've found about PLNs all have only a few steps that aren't explained very well. This article has just enough tips and information for someone who isn't that tech savvy to be able to create a PLN. I also like how they include the links to the different websites so people can go step by step in creating their network, then refer back to the article for the next step.
