    This is a link to an audio/visual presentation given by George Siemens on connectivism. The entire presentation takes about 15 min, but you can navigate to specific areas using the menu on the left sidebar. In this presentation he explores what connectivism is and our needs/desires as humans to create meaningful connections. This is a great resource for the auditory or visual learner that doesn't require endless reading!

    An audio presentation on this topic is a great resource! I saw several YouTube videos I thought were nice for overviews but I like that this is from the "founder" of connectivism.

    What a find! I love having information via audio or visual presentations and the combination is even better. Siemens does (of course) such a nice job of explaining connectivism-making it super clear for me to develop a clear understanding. I also appreciate the navigation menu as I wanted to go back to certain sections. Thanks so much for sharing this resource @kristiedtech

    I have to critique this video on two levels. First the video itself seemed more an exercise in using a non linear editor than in telling a story of communicating an idea. The message was lost in the many irrelevant images used by the authors of the video. Secondly it offed a minimal look at what connectivism is and the current thinking surrounding the use of connectivism as a learning theory. We need to hold electronic media to the same academic rigor used for scholarly peer review works. The authors of the video should have understood this as it was produced for a graduate level class. We as consumers of media need to be able to filter appropriate information for a given task at hand, and although alternatives to print media are desirable in education, the video was not able to address the theory level of connectivism effectively.

    Great video that has a section about how our students are "different" than when we were in school. "They [Students] expect to learn from technology because that is what they are used to." As soon as ALL teachers realize and accept this fact, then we as teachers can be one step closer to helping our students achieve their FULL potential!

    I like the idea of learners making meaningful choices. Anything that can guide students to make effective and relevant connections is a great resource. I also think teachers have a lot to learn about the way our students learn these days. The idea that students actually need to be a force in their own learning and that they expect instant gratification are concepts I have been seeing more frequently in my own classroom. Great resource!

    Don't let the academic sound of the title push you away from reading this article. The author, Bopelo Boitshwarelo, presents arguments: "This paper set out to propose a research framework that will aid in advancing the research agenda of connectivism, particularly developmental work. " It is very dense with lots of synthesis of research that has been done on Activity Theory, Connectivism, and Communities of Practice from 2000 - 2011, when it was published. If you need to do a content-based paper on activity theory, connectivism, or communities of practice, this has several references listed at the end that will help you find original sources of ideas.

    Thanks Melissa, this is helpful. No doubt that many of us are going to benefit from this type of research in our own academic pursuits. As you said, this study is fairly dense. But I also found that it breaks things down in nice chunks. I liked the explanation that a learning community is "a group of people learning together through continuous dialogue."

    The author, Bopelo Boitshwarelo, from University of Botswana, points out the interconnections of online communities of practice, design-based research, and activity theory. The author proposes designed-based research as a framework to advance connectivism. I found the first half of this article particularly helpful with definitions and key points synthesized from pioneers in the field of connectivism. Central ideas encompass the importance of learners connecting in a CoP both as providers and gleaners of information. Learning networks or communities of practice are complex and dynamic in nature, providing challenges to researchers and studying their effectiveness. The article provides food for thought about the complexities of the interconnections of these theories and the development of frameworks to monitor and assess learning success when putting them into practice.

    I found this site particularly fascinating in that it made proved the strong relationship between the nurturing approach and social reform model. It establishes some of the credibility of the source by giving an overview of the models' history and the objectively looks at the strengths and weaknesses of each. I particularly enjoyed the section at the end that asked the reader to question and formulate their own opinions. To me, connectivism is rooted in both the nurturing approach and social reform model as both use networks of information to make decisions that hold real world application.

    My struggle with pedagogies such as the nurturing approach is that I am torn between teaching my students according to the way the world is and the way the world should be. In the former, I believe my students are academically and emotionally prepared to learn in any environment. In the latter, I worry that my students won't be able to cope and compete in the real world. When I worked with at-risk youth, many of them fell behind when they started fourth grade after the "class size reduction subsidies" stopped, and they were put in classes with 50% more students. They were no longer able to get the specialized attention and they were not prepared for it.

    One of the aspects that Bates talks about in regards to connectivism is that "There is no need for formal institutions to support this kind of learning, especially since such learning often depends heavily on social media readily available to all participants." I found this statement to be a bit rogue as he tries to state that learning will automatically occur through the use of social media. In identifying how connectivism works, there is still a need to help define the learning for students so that they are provided with the proper structure of information, sources, and how to identify good information. I would love to think that all students inherently want to learn, but truly think that students also need to be taught how to learn through this medium. Not all learning will occur naturally.

    Nate, excellent find! That really was a great video, thank you for sharing that. One thing that struck me from the video was the realization that the coffee houses and salons of the past provided an opportunity for people with various "hunches" (per the video) to meet and mingle exchanging ideas. Perhaps the salon of the 21st century is the greater web communities (web forums, facebook, twitter etc).

    I Loved This! No doubt it gives a terrific explanation of the importance of a connected learning environment. For me it also gives that sense of worth for the ideas that are incubating within and just waiting for the serendipitous moment when they come together with their other piece(s). Imagine how empowering that is for a student who suddenly feels such potential. Nice one.

    I really liked this video. I never would have thought to search You Tube for this kind of resources. This video really does describe and make important the ideas involved in connectivism. I am interested in seeing what other great videos on this topic are on You Tube.

    The way Johnson describes how ideas (or "hunches," as he calls them) often need a great deal of time to develop is definitely interesting, but I think that part of it is somewhat expected or already understood. The part I found really fascinating with the focus on the connectivism notions that the hunch one person has may very well need to collide with another person's hunch before it can truly form into something useful. The end of the video provided a very profound thought to consider: "Chance favors the connected mind."

    I have seen this before and am still moved by it. I always discount the use of videos and I enjoy them so much I am not so sure why I never think to look there. I also like his idea that good ideas are born from smaller ideas.

    This is great. I really like the video format and how Johnson brought all of his ideas together and is really talking about connectivism. He never said the word, but he's talking about connectivity and innovation. He's talking about PLNs and CoPs. The video was very helpful

It explains how technology and learning novices, and their sense of confidence interact with Connectivist theory. This article is worth the read, if you are looking at the limitations of connectivism.

    This was really a fascinating look at the "other" side of connectivism. Having learned a bit about cMOOCs while working on this assignment, I agree that a connectivist MOOC is probably not the most suitable place for a novice learner, and it assumes that participants will enter with a certain level of prerequisite knowledge.

While I did not read every post, there is a large variety of articles, posted by various authors, written in the past several years. I think this would be a great place to conduct research on current information since there are articles only a few months old.

    This is a website dedicated to blogging on connectivism. Apparently no one cares about it anymore because the last post to it was over a year ago. However, it has quite a bit of content from 2005 to 2012 about connectivistic topics such as MOOCs and sensemaking.

    Here is a great blog site from George Siemens where he posts on various topics in education and their relativity to connectivism. The blog has not been updated in some time, but there is still a lot of great info on the site.

    This website page is the perfect summary of what Connectivism is and what it really represents. Stephen Downes states, "Learning is the creation and removal of connections between the entities, or the adjustment of the strengths of those connections. " This is probably the best resource I have found for truly understanding what Connectivism really is.

    This blog post provides an excellent overview of the eight core principles of connectivism, and how it relates to global collaboration throughout education. Check out the infographic in the middle of the post. It shows a clear illustration of how connectivism is associated with individuals interacting and collaborating to obtain new information through technological systems. I like how it displays that all learning is now connected.

    I think it helps to pull all of this information together when you can identify ways in which these foundations can be related to one another. I also appreciate the short and concise nature of the post - the author gets right to the point!

    This was an interesting read. I appreciated the author's written style. I found her overview of connectivism to be very helpful. In it, she outlines Siemens' eight principles of connectivism. I found the following most interesting: The "capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known." The focus on lifelong learning as a process is probably my favorite part about this theory. It truly democratizes knowledge and values those who make an effort to continue to grow. Thanks for sharing!

The author uses the example of a student "Bob", who is failing his political science class because the material is too complicated and not important to him. When Bob discovers that social media networks such as Facebook have resources that relate to his class, he begins to make connections and understand the material. Suddenly Bob has more understanding of the issue and is more interested in the topic. The creator of the video describes this process as the learning theory known as Connectivism.
