National Library Virtual Manipulatives - 0 views

  •
Many students do not have the experiences to visualize concepts taught in math classes. Sites such as National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, allows teachers to "assist the learner in this sense-making process" (Mayer, 2009, p. 17). These concept tutorials promote both behavioral and cognitive activity that leads to meaningful learning outcomes (Mayer, 2009, p. 23). The site also affords the teachers opportunities to modify lessons to meet the needs of individual students.

e-Tutor Graphing Calculator - 0 views

  •
Graphing calculators improve student attitudes and engagement with math content leading to a better understanding of the concepts. "…Knowledge-construction view is that multimedia learning is a sense-making activity" (Mayer, 2009, p. 17). Tools such as graphing calculators allow students to connect with their prior knowledge in order to make sense of algebraic equations. Teachers need tutorials available from sites such as this for both themselves and their students when infusing graphing calculators in the classroom.

Study Island - 0 views

The Study Island program is specifically designed to help students master the Tennessee Curriculum Standards. Study Island's focus on the required standards enables students to improve their performance in all standard skill areas, which results in increased proficiency and leads to improved test scores for Math, Reading/Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Students can use Study Island from any computer with internet access. This will help students prepare for TCAP (Tennessee's state assessment) as well as for next year's learning. Blue ribbons show mastery in the Subject Areas and Topic Areas assessed on TCAP. As students advance through the objectives, they can use games or test mode to complete tasks and achieve blue ribbons. I have seen this learner centered program really boost student learning in science and social studies, subjects I feel are often left to cram in at the end of the day. It appeals to students at various grade and learning levels. It is repetitive and gives direct instruction for areas of need.

PhET: Free online physics, chemistry, biology, earth science and math simulations - 0 views

  •
PhET Interactive Simulations (http://phet.colorado.edu/) allow students to see and practice complex science concepts that they are working on in class and see them actually performed. These simulations offer students the opportunity to try things out in a simulation before constructing their own machines. It allows teachers to show students advanced concepts and principles that they may not have the lab equipment to do in class. Students are able to manipulate the variables to see what happens so that physics is more than a series of equations. Mayer (2009) would see this as a knowledge construction becuase students are able to go in and manipulate the variables in their own way so that they given any circumstances they can see what happens. They are able to construct their own knowledge based on the parameters they put into the simulations so they can see what would happen when they apply more force or increase the mass of an object, they can then use that information to help them determine if their calculations make sense.
