A different take on PLN's

"Would any of my students turn down a 1:1 MacBook Pro? Of course not. Still, I believe there is great value in the limitations of resources. When we engage in Device Wars on twitter and the blogosphere, we all seem to exercise significant bias in equating the best classroom tool with the one that we find most productive in our personal or professional lives (I touched upon that in disagreeing with folks who contend that the iPad is not a creation tool). Do I have a vision of what technology I'd like in my class in the perfect scenario? Sure I do. Do my students and I really need that state of shiny utopia, especially when it is (in my view) impossible to achieve in an equitable fashion? I don't think so."

Educational Technology and Mobile Leaning  has dedicated an entire section to how teachers and educators can leverage the power of this video platform in education, and from to time we would add up to this section to make it more resourceful.

Teachers and students can use Gooru to search for rich collections of multimedia resources, digital textbooks, videos, games and quizzes created by educators in the Gooru community. Gooru is free (of cost and ads) and developed by a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor the human right to education.

With a wealth of information at their fingertips, how can students use the iPad to appreciate resources?

Khan Academy has just launched this new project designed to engage maths, science and media teachers, as well as young filmmakers. "Pixar In A Box" is an new online curriculum that "analyzes how the studio fuses art, tech, science, engineering, and math to develop top-shelf animated cinema. Created with middle and high school students in mind but available to everyone, Pixar In A Box's interactive exercises, in-depth video lessons, and hands-on activities are an informative addition to Khan Academy's extensive educational resources. The curriculum spans the pipeline of the production process.

Tools to create posts, webcam, and screencasts. No assessment or course sequence. Freemium model with generous caps on storage and bandwidth.

"Every teacher is taught that back up plans are a must. Things change constantly in education and there are a variety of factors that can make plans change - computer breaks, internet goes out, file is corrupted, forgot your flash drive at home, you finish a lesson early with a class, your class has very low attendance due to a school activity or event (like AP testing, prom, etc), lesson runs long, students don't understand the material, class is interrupted by a fire drill. To deal with these issues, teachers must have back up plans ready to go and be flexible and organized. Here are some tips and resources for backup plans."
