Getting people walking will help build support for creation of more walkable places, decrease air pollution and traffic congestion, improve physical health, and other benefits. Research reveals that creating places for walking (such as walking trails) and other forms of physical activity may be associated with increased physical activity. Below is a list of ideas that a walking coalition or partnership may select from to get going. If there is not yet an established coalition in your community, then find out more about how to build a coalition. The ideas below can be used to inspire and motivate people to get out of their cars and walk. 1. Make walking part of the business: walk at work programs Partner with large employers to design and publicize routes to walk on the business campus, give time for walking during the day or foster walking groups. One example is Berkeley's walking groups for employees. Some employers also offer incentives for physical activity through their insurance provider. For example, Blue Cross/Blue Shield members in North Carolina's State Health Plan can earn free gifts like backpacks, water bottles, blankets and tents as they log their activity. American Heart Association provides support to business-based walking programs through incentive items, printable material and recognition. 2. Offer incentives and buddies: mileage clubs Use online and community-based programs that encourage walking and provide incentives for reaching mileage goals either individually or in groups. See the America on the Move program or a "Walk Across a State" program sponsored by cooperative extensions. For older adults, there is AARP's Get Fit on Route 66 online mileage club. 3. Maryland & Virginia Telework How can municipal and regional governments best promote telework? This case study highlights the telework program that originated in the Washington DC area in 1996, and the state-wide program that was subsequently established in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The later offers cost reimbursement (up to $35,000 per business), free personal assistance, and promotional "Telework Days." Both programs help overcome key policy and adoption barriers, and both have impressive impact data. Background This case study focuses on telework initiatives in the region of Washington, DC, which covers the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions (counties and cities within Maryland and Virginia). In 2010, the region had about 2.8 million workers and the regional forecast is to add 1.2 million new jobs to the region by 2030. Such growth forecasts will impact the region's transportation infrastructure. Commuter Connections, a regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), started in 1974 to provide mobility solutions in the region. The network is administered through the Regional Metropolitan Planning Organization, part of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB)   Setting Objectives The Commonwealth set a goal of having 20% of its eligible workforce [approximately 105,000 employees) teleworking by 2010. Seeking expert-based consensus becomes a particularly pressing problem when policy applications are needed and yet the current formal models or analytical methods are insufficient for drawing policy conclusions from the science itself. The goal of this workshop is to bring together philosophers and social scientists who have done extensive work on the problems of expertise and expert-based consensus, in order to discuss both theoretical and applied issues related to a methodology of expert judgment and consensus seeking among experts. While the focus of this workshop is primarily on those aspects of the topic that are related to the social sciences, the workshop will touch on the natural sciences and engineering as well. The Downtown Renaissance Extends Its Reach Yonah Freemark March 16th, 2011 | 63 Comments » In terms of residential growth, U.S. downtowns are coming back, even in the face of continued sprawl and trouble elsewhere in center cities. For many inner cities in the United States, the ten years that opened the third millennium were not easy. In the face of declining employment and ever-increasing suburban sprawl, the populations of many of the nation's largest cities - especially in the Midwest - declined. According to the U.S. government, which has begun to release data from the 2010 Census, the troubles for a number of municipalities that have not successfully transitioned from industrial-age employment paradigms to information age ones continue to mount. On the face of it, the statistics are gloomy for this representative group of cities: Baltimore lost 4.6% of its population since 2000 Chicago: -6.9% Cincinnati: -10.4% Cleveland: -17.1% Pittsburgh: -8.6% St. Louis: -8.3% These data imply that the long-heralded re-invigoration of U.S. urban cores remains stilted at best; if major cities such as these continue to lose population, how can planners and politicians continue to repeat the argument that Americans are moving back to the city? Indeed, even if some cities like New York are seeing their populations expand, the failure of many rust belt cities to keep up despite growth in their respective metropolitan area populations suggests that there is no unified "return to the city" movement. Yet it would be difficult to go to the center of any of the cities listed above and not notice all the new construction that has occurred over the past ten years. Who lives in all of those buildings? Who is patronizing the redeveloped retail and restaurant districts that grace each of these towns? Many cities round the world want to develop their traffic culture with a view to more sustainable mobility. We are seeing public transport systems developing along these lines in many cities throughout the world. Along with this, there is a wish to develop a cycle culture in order to increase the mobility of the citizens and to reduce private car traffic in the cities. The aim of the course is to contribute to the development of liveable and bikeable cities throughout the world. Development of a cycle culture is an important part of sustainable mobility. The objective is to increase cycling by creating a safe environment for cyclists, which will also contribute to urban life, to a liveable urban environment and to the health of the citizens. Moreover, a bikeable city will contribute to important Millennium Development Goals in reducing poverty, developing democracy and increasing both gender equality and growth through increased mobility. The TSI consists of three component indexes: a freight index, a passenger index, and a combined (or total) index. Figure 1 shows the freight and passenger indexes as recently displayed on the BTS website. The TSI is the broadest monthly measure of U.S. domestic transportation services and, as such, provides the best current measure available of these services. As an index, the TSI reflects real monthly changes in freight and passenger services in the United States. After development of the TSI, followed by additional research, it became clear the TSI moved in conjunction with other indicators of the national economy. Cycles of various kinds, depths, and durations occur frequently in the U.S. economy. Of these, the business cycles of recession and expansion, and the growth cycle are of particular interest to economists. The TSI, as presently published on the BTS website, spans the time period from 1990 to the present and covers two recessions. But, extending the TSI back to 1979 allows coverage of four recessions2 and numerous growth cycles. By comparing the turning points in the extended TSI with other economic data series, it is possible to ascertain whether and how transportation services relate to movement in the overall economy. Quantitatively exploring the relationships between the turning points of the TSI and measures of the broader economy reveal some interesting results. These groups form for the achievement of shared goals. Creating change to improve safety and increase the number of people walking requires a multi-disciplinary effort. The likelihood of success increases when coalitions or partnerships bring together dedicated individuals including: Law enforcement officials, including officers and members of the judiciary Health industry, including doctors, nurses, dieticians, and health educators People in transportation and development, including engineers, planners, developers Parents, senior citizens, schools, parks and recreation departments The cooperation of public and private interests, professionals, businesses, and interested citizens can yield broad support for multi-faceted solutions to pedestrian problems. These groups exist at local and national levels. Many of them can serve as models for a local organization, or they may have members from your community. National coalitions, alliances and partnerships America Walks America Walks is a national coalition of local advocacy groups dedicated to promoting walkable communities. The group helps communities form advocacy groups. Members are autonomous grassroots organizations from across the country, each working to improve conditions for walking in their area. The mission of America Walks is to foster the development of community-based pedestrian advocacy groups, to educate the public about the benefits of walking, and, when appropriate, to act as a collective voice for walking advocates. America Walks provides a support network for local pedestrian advocacy groups. Cycling Copenhagen, Through North American Eyes by Clarence Eckerson, Jr. on July 15, 2010 | 80,950 Plays Email Share While Streetfilms was in Copenhagen for the Velo-City 2010 conference, of course we wanted to showcase its biking greatness.  But we were also looking to take a different perspective then all the myriad other videos out there.  Since there were an abundance of advocates, planners, and city transportation officials attending from the U.S. and Canada, we thought it'd be awesome to get their reactions to the city's built environment and compare to bicycling conditions in their own cities. If you've never seen footage of the Copenhagen people riding bikes during rush hour - get ready - it's quite a site, as nearly 38% of all transportation trips in Copenhagen are done by bike.  With plenty of safe, bicycle infrastructure (including hundreds of miles of physically separated cycletracks) its no wonder that you see all kinds of people on bikes everywhere.  55% of all riders are female, and you see kids as young as 3 or 4 riding with packs of adults.
