Conservationists got a mixed bag of news following an international group overseeing the world's species protection initiatives meeting this weekend. These small-scale fishermen in southern Japan are up against an industrial fishing juggernaut that is rapidly depleting stocks of Pacific bluefin tuna. A prime culprit behind the crisis, the Iki fishermen said, is a high-tech Japanese fishing armada that mines the waters northeast of Iki where Pacific bluefin tuna congregate to spawn. For the past 11 years, convoys of boats have waited in the Sea of Japan for these fish to gather, then used sonar tracking devices and huge purse seine nets to scoop them up by the thousands and sell them to global seafood giants such as Nippon Suisan Kaisha and Maruha Nichiro Corporation.

Microsoft became the first company to purchase carbon credits generated by the Makira conservation project in Madagascar, which intends to preserve 320,000 hectares of forests and prevent 32.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Vietnam's Asia Green will undertake an agroforestry and reforestation program following a merger with Touchlink Communications and a deal to acquire a majority stake in Hoan Vu, which was granted the land for the program's initial phase. Cosmetics company Revlon announced plans to remove two preservatives and a formaldehyde-releasing chemical as ingredients in its products. The announcement is in response to a petition signed by over 100,000 people.
